Bug 3

This insect was not fully planned before hand as I didn’t like the others ideas as much as the other models so I made a completely new one using a combination of ideas and insect parts from my already designed pieces.

The excess amount of skin where the jaw should be, was inspired by octopus tentacles, as this is a sea creature i decided to create a jagged surface almost like small hairs making it look more like a limb from a spider.

After Painting the Splurge patterns onto the red base layer, I noticed it looked remarkably like Sith Twi Lek as pictured below. Her hair is formed in two thick antenna like bunches and is covered in symbolic markings yet more precise and sharp edges than on my model.

Small spikes from a plant were used to line the shoulder armour pad to act as hairs that have a protection element.

Bug 2

This Insect has what I call the pumpkin look, the main skin colour is a bright orange and has details of green and blue colours. The colour combination was out of the blue as I didn’t plan it before hand, which is what I must do next time. 

The whole look of this bust is more human like than the other two, which is not a bad thing but it reminds me of a robot more than an insect. 

The process was quite simple, however the shape of the base of the bust was difficult to maintain  in the same shape as i was holding it and applying super sculpey onto it. 

Once I finished the base coat of green on the top of the head, I thought that it looked quite plain so i decided to add millions of individual dots in dark green, blues and reds, this gave my character a bit more dimension and less boring.

Bug 1

While creating this insect bust, i had to decide on colour, pattern design, shape and size of the head and all have a significant meaning.

The yellow and purple colour combination was used, as in Insect terminology the bright colours are aposematic colouration, which means that the colours are there to warn an enemy that it is poisonous and for it not to be eaten. And when looking at alot of Poison Dart Frogs i found similar patterns and alot of dots are used to show this.

A feature on two of my Insect busts are the Fly eyes, they are good as they make the insect look more alien like and as they don’t have pupils it makes them look a little creepy looking.

In my A3 worksheet above you can see that I tried out a few different pattern combinations and chose the purple and yellow as it was simplistic and for the time limit i had i found that it would be quicker to do and finish precisely without running out of time.

Bug Illustrations

By taking inspiration from a lot of insects, including Stag beetles, Stick Insects, Praying Mantis, and Flies, I created a series of insect/human hybrids; each one has a different part and combination of insect body parts, along with human characteristics like the stature and torso construction.

Mimic

Entomologist Dr. Susan Tyler genetically created an insect to kill cockroaches carrying a virulent disease. Now, the insects are out to destroy their only predator, mankind.

The head of the bug below looks gruesome and almost human like, in the middle it looks as though there are two slits where the human eyes used to be, but the actual bug eyes are huge and positioned at the side of the head.

Poison Dart Frogs/Rorschach Test

Poison dart frog is the name of a group of frogs which are native to tropical Central and South America. These species are diurnal and often have brightly coloured bodies. This bright coloration is associated with the toxicity of the species, making them aposematic. The bright colours warn off other species that might want to eat them.

These colourful patterns are very similar and remind me much of the Rorschach Test; this is a psychological test in which subjects perceptions of inkblots are recorded and then analysed using psychological interpretation and complex algorithms. Some psychologists use this test to examine a person's personality characteristics and emotional functioning. 

The patterns are very insect like and the meaning behind aposematic is inspiring and in my opinion would look good on one of my insects.

Hot Toys

Hot Toys Limited is a Hong Kong-based production company for designing, developing, and manufacturing highly detailed collectible merchandise. They create well known characters from films like Harry Potter, Star Wars and Guardian’s of the Galaxy.

This is Dobby, his figure was created by Hot Toys in the Harry Potter series. They have given him a worried, concerned expression and used the ears to also imitate the eyes. His sad face definitely works for most poses as most of the time he is a sad elf. However he is lacking a little on finer details and texture, like on the inside of the ears and the neck but considering the model is of small scale you wouldn't notice as much. 

All in all, the models made by Hot Toys are extremely detailed and are good collectable items. I imagine the models I make would be used in a collection of collectables.

District 9

An extra terrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly finds a kindred spirit in a government agent who is exposed to their biotechnology.

The Aliens are bipedal, several feet taller than humans, and have dark thick shell-like skin as well as a mass of facial tendrils and are also very strong. As you can see on the face of the alien, his skin is covered In a shell like armour which make the creature look more fearsome and effect the shape of its head.

Rango

In the film Rango, a chameleon, accidentally ends up in the town of Dirt, an outpost that is in desperate need of a new sheriff.

The art style of Rango, mostly attempts to make its funny animal characters as photorealistic as possible. Rango, aside from his clothing, might pass as a real chameleon if he got down on all fours and growled, but some characters do tend more towards ugly than cute.

The main character Rango is very slim with a large head, with one eye larger than the other making him look quite goofy. The slight abnormalities like his eye and crooked neck give him a personality and you can tell just by looking at him how he might act.

The woman in the top left above picture, to me, looks quite ugly. she is an iguana called Beans but doesn't look as similar as other characters. Her long sloping nose and her pursed lips make her look quite prude and proper as does her hair.

Dominic Qwek has been building a series of amazing out of this world creatures. Each creature is designed and sculpted in Zbrush and Keyshot, before getting 3d printed and casted then finally painted by a separate artist. He produces model kits that are available to buy, put together and paint for yourself.

All of his work is very detailed and inspired a lot by films like the Alien films and Xenomorph. The paint jobs bring the creature alive as using an airbrush has a great smooth effect - like the eyes of the bug like creature just below.  I would like to try out this painting method so I could achieve the same quality as in Dominic’s work.

Hunter X Hunter Bugs

When looking at the artwork from Hunter X Hunter I noticed this creature is very ant like/warrior like. The similarities between the two are great, despite a few features like the tail, more human like physique and exaggerated body parts.

Destiny Hive

“Hive are an undead race in Destiny who travel in spaceships that serve as tombs. Little is known about their origins or history other than they battled humans at the end of the Golden Age; they wear encrusted armour which gives them the appearance of undead royalty.”

They both have a similar look to the Aliens from the Alien films, for example the pulled back forehead, sharp pointy teeth at the front and particular body armour. All of these attributes make the creature terrifying, which is the look id like to achieve.

Anatomy of Insects

There is a lot to the anatomy of insects and most are the same, just with a few slight differences.

When designing my creature, insect human hybrid, I want to mainly focus on using parts of an insect that are most recognisable like the antennas, the large eyes and pincers.

Formics

The Formics are an advanced space aged alien species, nicknamed buggers because of their bug like appearance. The species thrive on various planets in a hive. There are three types of Formics, the Hive Queen, Male drones and the workers, the Hive Queens use mind control to dominate over the others and make then construct, repair and keep the hive healthy, just like a normal Ant Queen.

Above on the left is a comic book style of the Hive Queen and the other is from the film Enders Game; both are quite similar except the comic book version is more muscular, fearsome and ready for battle. The eyes look angry whereas the version from the film is very subdue, angelic and strangely like biscuit as though it could shatter into pieces.

The large alien like head inspires me and makes you think that the creature is intelligent because of the size.

Edgar the Bug

Edgar the Bug is a bug alien and the main villain in the first Men in Black film. He appears as a giant cockroach though while on earth, he adopts the disguise of an ordinary farmer (human) and gets easily irritated when any bugs get killed. He also has inhuman abilities like super strength, vocal camouflage and slime secretion which is used to restrain his targets. 

Edgar in his natural appearance, the bug, has two antenna hanging over his head, six limbs, yellow eyes, an array of sharp teeth and a body covered in slime. He resembles that of a cockroach but also has some similarities with other insects; as you can see his body frame and eyes are alike that of a Praying Mantis, his hind legs are similar to those of a Grasshopper and his tail features a stinger just the same as a Hornets. The combination of insects makes him a hybrid and gives him the abilities that those insects possess - making him one of a kind.
