A lot of how I go about designing characters has to do with an understanding of character design in a lot of media I started to notice which was that: character design always seemed to get more interesting the farther away you got from the protagonists of a story.

And by “interesting” I don’t mean “the side characters look cooler,” (even if that’s sometimes the case) I mean like … a piece of media will give characters different body types, facial features, ‘weirder’ attributes, but primarily reserve things that aren’t too cookie-cutter for side characters or background characters.

its something I recognized when the whole “draw like ghibli” trend was huge for a while. Surface level understanding of “the ghibli style”meant drawing yourself pretty dainty and cute with big eyes and small noses and nothing really that notable, the “ghibli art style” in relation to character design contains so much more than what people generalized it as- BUT, and I mean this politely, a lot of the Ghibli protagonists look incredibly similar. It’s not incapable of unique silhouettes or different body types, but you see even more interesting designs the further you move away from the ghibli protagonists. And I don’t even mean the monsters, I just mean like…. People with more pronounced facial features, unique face shapes, more human in them.

this recognition of a pattern in media made a couple things click in my head. Since I was younger, I always gravitated a lot more to the side characters, even some of the more objectively disliked ones. You notice how shows and movies equate “looking different” with being a negative and unchanging force in a character lineup, but you don’t really know why. And eventually I realized that in spite of what the story wanted me to think about this character and their personality because of their appearance- I usually looked more like them, or at least, I thought I did, than any protagonist I would come across. And since I was and am also a person capable of experiencing ugly emotions and feelings, I feel more like the side characters built to look and behave as lesser or supplementary to the protagonists.

so a lot of my characters take on visual design usually reserved for side characters. Old people (like, above the age of 40 old people,) fat best friends, women who break slim waisted wide hipped silhouettes. And I just. Migrate them over to the position of the protagonist, the one in view. Because in spite of the lack of representation in whatever way for people who just look different, these characters are still in a lot more pieces of media than you’d expect. Just not treated with respect, not given the respect to be the protagonist in the story. Only ever the palpable, laughable side characters or the obviously bad examples.
