I do tend to shy away from sharing things politically-charged, but my original intent for posting today shifted after what I experienced last night. Being mixed and in an interracial relationship isn’t something I think about daily (I’m the product of love and I AM in love), but I’ve never felt my safety threatened because of those identities. Walking last night to move our car at a friend’s, Matt and I were encountered by a large group of kids shouting explicitly and running around. Normally I wouldn’t have given it a second thought (hello, we’re in NYC), but as I listened, their words didn’t just feel like rowdy teens being teens. As we continued to walk, the group across the street eventually moved towards us and I started to feel surrounded. I felt as if most of what was being said was directed at Matt (not making me feel better by any means), but then it became obvious it was focused more on us as a couple. That’s not something new to me, but as I’ve often struggled to find home in the Blackness of my identity, I felt targeted as an outsider—as if I wasn’t Black enough—and it really sucked. Growing up, the “N” word was not said in my house, having been taught the tremendous history and hate associated with that word. To hear it over and over again, along with sexual innuendos, stung and paralyzed me in the moment since responding was not an option against 30 people. I just didn’t expect to be attacked by own people. I’m still obviously dissecting this and who knows if I’m just overreacting, but I know this: Words have weight. Actions have weight. Swipe right for a fun surprise 👉 Feeling a little Philosophical Monday over here. Artistic identity has been on my mind a lot lately and I’m not sure about you, but every time someone asks, “What do you do?” I wanna run away as fast as I can like 🌬️ the Road Runner. Matt and I both have had some wacky journeys through the arts and where we started is definitely NOT where we are now (and still going). Call it irrational, but I often feel the need to compartmentalize art forms to be taken seriously. Call it that “master of none” syndrome. 🥸 Ha. I’d rather call it just plain DUMB now. Nowadays, it’s almost required as an artist to wear many hats regardless, which makes multidisciplinary folks inevitably go bananas with those “split personalities.” And for those magical creatures out there who truly are masters of one discipline, isn’t it slightly annoying digressing from just making the art to double as your own publicist, videographer, composer, etc? This is why branding design sometimes makes me laugh (fun fact: what I studied in school!). This was one tough~ola week. With so much uncertainty still in the air, it feels great celebrating those small wins 🙌🏾 when they happen. With the help of our small (yet mighty!) army of friends we planted the seed for a pretty crazy music video concept. It involves a lot of limbs in weird places, an homage to Busby Berkeley (if you don’t know who this mastermind was, LOOK HIM UP!), and a dream dance sequence 💃🏾 that I hope can be repeated on stage. I don’t know about you, but it’s refreshing to collaborate again and I’m ALL ABOUT what it takes behind the scenes to pull something off. The other day we went renegade style around the neighborhood, spotting things I personally had missed all these months in isolation. It was refreshing to jump, eat tacos, run, dodge baby strollers, and beat impending rain (perhaps not all in that order). As we step into a rehearsal studio next week, I’m incredibly nervous (and BEYOND EXCITED!) to hear what we all sound like, coming together with renewed energy. And not being mushy, but that’s when the music truly does bring all of us back together.
