😼 with Jace!
Steph's car was parked at the rec center, his planned destination for a good old nap! The backseat of the old impala had been turned into a bed already-- but Steph was nowhere to be found. Instead there was a siamese cat, who's yowling could be heard even from a bit of a distance away.
Steph couldn't believe it! Strange things were possible sure but waking up as a cat was something he never could've accounted for! He needed to investigate, but it was hardly something he could do on his own like this. Especially when the window, partially rolled down, wasn't enough for him to squeeze through-- and he couldn't work the door handle! So instead he's taken to calling for help, yowling and meowing his little heart out to the opened window in the hopes that someone would come along and free him!

"Oooh okay, that gives me more questions, though! Like-- what if someone doesn't want to be tethered? Is it something you do against their will or is it something they kinda have to consent to? Also! What about possession? I mean, can your average human spirit possess people, or is that something that's more specialized? If every old ghost can do it though, do they have to do it to a body that's already got another soul in it? I guess I'm asking because like-- well if something happened and say, I got taken out of my body, what's stopping me from just possessing my own body? Or are there weird things where you can't even possess your own body? If you died next to someone could you just body swap freaky friday style, in that case?" His energy seems boundless and unlimited, a feedback loop consistently feeding into itself and generating more and more questions. But who could really blame him for wanting answers?
"Huh-- you know I guess that makes sense! You seem like you never really deal with the living so why would you care about us I guess." He laughs. If the other's comment had even registered as negative, you'd never know. He keeps his stride just perfectly. "Oh! Do you have a name by the way? And can I tell you mine?? I know with like certain types of entities you're not really supposed to give your name and like, I wouldn't be giving you my name, but I could tell it to you!" As if his name wasn't in bold glowing display right on the front of his jacket already.
He's not trying to be nice, he simply doesn't want to kill someone who is not yet supposed to die. It would be a logistical nightmare, and trying to solve those sorts of issues always takes longer than one would like.
"I do. When I touch someone, I tether their soul to me, so that I can take them to the afterlife. A soul cannot remain in a dead body, but a living body also will not last without a soul, meaning that if I drag your soul out of your body, your body will die as a result." He explains it the best he can without making things too complicated.
"Reaper is a term you could use, yes. Some call us angels of death, personally, I do not care. My kind isn't exactly concerned with how humanity speaks of us. You're all meaningless until you die." He probably could've phrased that a bit more nicely, but it wasn't like he'd been trained to interact with the living, exactly.

"Oh--!" Probably for the first moment since they've started talking, Steph pauses. His head tilts, and he blinks. He wants to move forward, to keep their distance as if that'd somehow keep the other from blinking out of view again, but he doesn't-- aside from one of his shoes scuffing forward less than an inch before he stops it.
The sudden harshness is the reason of his concern, but he doesn't have to worry long before an explanation is provided. It thaws him almost instantly and his smile returns. "Aw, thanks for warning me! That's really nice of you!! Do you know why that happens?" He taps the side of his chin, humming a curious note. "That's it, I bet you're a reaper then, right? I've heard stories about grim reapers having deadly touches!"
The other is...a lot. Loud. Overly excited. The angel of death admittedly struggles a little with this. He's used to intense emotions, though not the positive kind, really. The dead are often either completely subdued or deeply saddened. Some are angry, but none of them are ever this excited. He can't help but flinch as the other's voice rises in pitch.
There are a lot of words being spoken and while he does hear all of it, he isn't quite sure how to respond. Mostly because more questions are fired his way by the second and he hardly has any time to really think about any of them.
"No, don't touch me." His voice comes out harsher than expected and he takes a step back, his appearance flickering even more wildly. "My touch is deadly, it would kill you. Keep your distance." Even with the gloves he does not wish to risk it.

Steph waves a hand dismissively, his tongue caught between his teeth in a smile. "Oh I wouldn't just invite myself to your place! I think it'd be super fun to see where you live, but I was thinking! Maybe I could get us a hotel room, or we could totally do a lock-in!! I've got a few places in my docket that could be really fun for that! Orrrrrr we could always do it in my car but there's not actually that much room in there." He laughs at the thought.
"Jace!!" Steph calls eagerly, bounding up to his friend. "I had a great idea! What if we had-- a sleepover! If you'd want to, of course!"
Tumblr media
"A sleepover?" Jace perked at the notion, already energized by Steph's eager approach. "That sounds fun! Where? Did you want to come over? Or-- are we talking like a scary sleepover at a place that we're looking into??" Either way, count him in!

"Oh-- I didn't mean anything by it! It's just the next most common type of spirit usually found in active locations like this that aren't really the same as most of your usual spirits! I'll admit they're usually kind of oppressive to other spirits but you seem more like you wanna protect the others which is actually super sweet! But also why I figured that means you have to be something else!"
He does jump a bit when the other says he'll answer the questions, though!! This was just so exciting!! "Oooh the afterlife? What's that like! And does that mean you're like... hm. An angel? Or a reaper, maybe! There's a bit more conjecture than known fact about those sorts of things thou-oughhhhh!!! Visual manifestation!!!!" His voice pitches with the sheer overwhelming amount of excitement, and he fumbles not to just throw his spirit box by accident. "This is so exciting, you look so cool!!! Are you physical, too? Like, could I reach out and touch you? Can I try??"
This stranger had so much energy... it was a little tiresome, though the angel of death could still appreciate seeing someone with such zest for life. Life was short, and it was best to make the most of it so that you could move on to the afterlife without regrets once your time came.
The other's excitement was still a bit much though.
"I am most certainly not demonic." He was just a little offended by that. He didn't mind demons, generally, as long as they didn't get in his way, but angels of death and demons were hardly comparable. He didn't love the idea of conversing with a random human, but if that meant that said random human would leave these suffering souls alone...well, then it was practically part of his job, wasn't it?
"I will answer your questions. I come from the afterlife. People can usually only see me if they are about to die, though since this place is so full of death, it's possible you'll be able to catch a glimpse."
He'd gotten closer, and as he had said, he could be seen, but only barely. His form was flickering like a candle, but he was visible.

If Steph notices the very concerned look he doesn't say so-- he's aware that his job isn't for the faint of heart! But that's just another reason he has to bring the truth to light!
"Oh, yeah!! I got the address right here!" He chimes, reaching into one of the incredibly deep inner pockets of his jacket. There's some crinkling noises and a metallic jingle as he digs around, before finally producing a small notepad. The page he shows Jonas has an address written at the top, and a few more notes about rumors and other details of the location, as well as a few little ghost doodles. The only problem though, is that all of the writing was in cursive. Hopefully Jonas could read it.
"Ever heard of the place before?"
Jonas's expression became unexpectedly soft when Steph reacted to such a simple little sleight of hand. It wasn't that big of a trick but they acted like he'd just pulled pigeons out of his sleeve. It was sort of nice to get a reaction like that. Of course as he listened to Steph explaining what brought them there and what they intended to do, his expression grew a bit puzzled and then quickly back into very Deep Concern. Because 'abandoned warehouse' really did not sound like anywhere Jonas wanted to be, haunted or not and his mind raced trying to think of what would be the best way to gently steer Steph as fucking far away from any area that would have shit like that.
" Oh sure sure uhhh abandoned warehouse. Soooo did you uhm did you get an address for that place or anything? " Maybe he could walk them around until it got dark and then encourage them to head back to where ever they were staying for the night.

There's knocking on his window. It doesn't wake him up immediately, he's only just recently gone to bed despite the hour and he's... exhausted. He shifts slightly but doesn't open his eyes. Maybe he'd just dreamt the noise. But-- no, there it is again.
Steph opens his eyes and they're bleary, but he manages to crawl his way over to the window crank and roll it down just a little bit. "Mm-- yeah..?"

Note
Steph wants to move, to run and check the displays on his camera to see if the other is showing up at all! But-- agh, no, he can't! What if he moves and, he doesn't know, loses connection with the spirit somehow? This is the first time he's ever gotten such direct communication from a possible ghost before! So he anchors his feet to the floor as best he can; no jumping around, either!
"So you're not like the others here?" What could THAT mean? There's some precedence for more demonic entities taking over a space and oppressing the other spirits there, but the way the other spoke felt like that might not be the case here! "Well-! I don't necessarily have to talk to them-- but maybe I could keep talking to you instead then, if that's okay!! If you're not like the other people here and you don't have a name, what can I call you? Or-- what ARE you? You don't seem very demonic! Are you able to manifest visually? Do you like my spirit box? I made it myself! Where did you come from? I-- wait wait, no, sorry, I know these kinds of things are supposed to be sorta one question at a time." He laughs, an almost giddy noise. "But you've already spoken so much! And this is my first time connecting to a real spirit!"
People rarely saw him. If they did, that usually meant that they had reached the end of their life and the sweet embrace of death was about to envelop them. He was a sign of the end, of ones candle being snuffed out. He was the one who would take you into the afterlife once your time was up.
It is what brought him here, to this place of destruction and loss. The souls that had been there had already been carried over. The ones that were willing, at least. Some slipped between the cracks. They could not leave this plane behind just yet, their deaths too painful and too sudden to process in the little time they'd been given. He would keep an eye on them. Would provide them with the chance to come with him once they were ready. None of them were ready today.
There was one soul there that would definitely not be coming with him; a living one. He'd watched the living individual with only a small hint of interest. The living were usually meaningless to him, until they stopped breathing, anyway... but this one did manage to grab his attention.
He'd seen one or two ghost hunters before in the many centuries he'd been around. He never liked them much. He felt that the dead deserved to be left alone and undisturbed, and ghost hunters went against all that. Maybe that's why he did something he usually wouldn't do: He spoke to other.
"I do not have a name. I do not need one. You shouldn't be here. You are alive. Leave these souls alone."

"See?? Action's where it's at!! I can't really say I know how to horseback ride or shoot! Except for with a camera of course!" He laughs. "I don't think I've ever even held a gun now that I think about it! Not that I'd ever really need to I guess, I've got a baseball bat and a mean swing, and a pocket knife!" Steph mimes swinging a baseball bat as he says it.
His eyes catch something red when he's coming back from the motion, though, and he beams. "Hey!! Whoa, I like your horns! Are they the little clip in ones? I used to have a pair too, except they were like-- green! The red suits you though! And it's kinda cool with your hat too, they kinda look like they could prop up the brim of it! Are you into demons and paranormal stuff too?"

Butch can’t help but cackle at their attempt to remedy what could have been perceived as a negative attribute, and maybe it was to an extent. But he’d come to accept the dumbass gene he’d inherited by now, taking it in stride and using his true strengths to his advantage. So perhaps they weren’t exactly wrong about their observation.
Tumblr media
“Well, I cant say yer wrong. What I lack fer in wits, I make up fer in action! Like horseback ridin’ an’ shootin. So, I s’pose m’smart in other areas.” He considers. That’s a way to put a positive spin on his lack of conventional book smarts. It also didn’t help that he was pulled out of school in the sixth grade.

"Sure I'm a lil’ stupid, but that's like 80% of my charm!"
"Oh I'm sure you're not that bad!! A lot of the times stupid is like-- a state of mind! You know? But actually, stupid is usually just mislabeled genius! So maybe you're actually really smart!" Steph beams, emphatic fists shaking up and down in front of his chest as he makes his point.
"And charming!!"

" can you hear my voice ? " - From Sylvester (in his Deadly Feathers AU)
It was really amazing what you could find, if you knew where to look. And Steph, well, he was certainly good at looking. So! Abandoned hospital? He had started his research the moment he heard about the place. There was lots of precedence for spirits in places that harbored negative energy after all-- so a hospital was already of high interest. And this one was even more perfect than the average hospital as he had learned, abandoned after a raging fire that trapped and killed a number of staff and patients alike. All of the loss, the fear... it had the potential to be a total ghost central!
So off he went. He stands now in the charred remains of the burnt wing-- where the structure had somehow survived but everything it held hadn't been so lucky. It's dark, sometimes spirits are more receptive to dark spaces, but he's set up a camera or two, one with night vision and another with thermal imaging capabilities. You would need neither to see him, though-- every patch and pin he wears is glowing in the dark. Even the star on his necklace and his shoelaces glow, there would be no possible way to miss him.
His handheld device of choice for now is the spirit box-- while he's not the biggest fan of the constant pulsing static noise he does ultimately love the device itself for its ability to allow a spirit's voice through if it so wishes. He'd just gotten set up and asked his first question, a very simple "Is anyone there?" When-- a voice comes through. It's clear as day. A REAL VOICE CAME THROUGH?? Steph gasps, nearly dropping the device in his excitement as his eyes grow wide. "Yes!! Yes, I can hear you!" His grin is unmatched. "What's your name?"
