Ciara Phillips exhibition at Glasgw Print Studio for Glasgow International 2018. Beautiful woodcuts on large scale, about 200 x 100, warm pastel colours, small area of wood relief printed as strips of fabric or paper. Made me realise that the grain of the wood itself is part of the beauty, that ot's not all about the skill and quality of the cutting. I think for such a large area of wood, a laser cutter must have been used.

Working large A1 cartridge and A2 Somerset - 3 different sized rollers, mixing on the tray, more mark-making but bigger, looser. Not as successful as I would have hoped, would have liked to put down a contrasting ground, maybe in acrylic but chances are the colours would have become muddy. Actually like the cleanness of this.

Another woodcut - beginning to get more of a feel for how to do this and keen to develop on into Laser cutting and Risograph, though with aspects of my Beth Forde image.

More woodcut - deciding to work with a more figurative image but trying to be freer and less inhibited by the process. So different sizes and colours of paper, whole image and mixing colours on the page rather than on the tray; using bits of the image on small pieces of cartridge; pieces of paper rubbed on to rolling tray; partial images on little pieces of Japanese newsprint; random repeats of the image on A3 sheet Enjoying this approach much more, the results are more suggestive, evocative. More scope for me to take aspects of this kind of activity into other area eg painting or collage.

Image on left is first piece I’ve done where I’ve achieved the colours I set out to make. The ink is too thick and sticky but the cutting and colouring turned out the way I hoped after I drew up a plan. However I used up surplus ink from the second last layer to make the two right hand prints and I much preferred the monochrome style as well as the actual colour.

Woodblocks from today’s session. Still a long way to go but beginning to get a feel for the tools and an understanding of where to cut to achieve areas of colour. More practice needed.

Two versions of initial design taken from Beth Forde's glass mask. Still getting the cutting/ colouring wrong unfortunately.

Progress report
After several attempts at woodcut relief printing, I need to do the following:
Buy new tools - have now ordered from Intaglio printmakers, awaiting delivery.
Decide on image for final work: have taken tracings of elements of Beth Forde's piece and will attempt to make my own appropriated image for printing.
Attend GPS to make prints - facilities are excellent, quality of inks etc
Work out how to register for different colours
I also intend to laser cut the original image on to ply and then make a serial/ repeat pattern print with that.
And also plan to make Risograph print, so a variety of print outcomes.

Woodcut - first version of image. Failed to get colours right. Need to keep working on small size ply to figure this out. Have now ordered new tools and ink to try to make my life easier.... Existing tools are very hard work.

Developing imagery - following conversation with Scott, using different ways of approaching the Beth Forde piece to create my own image for woodcut. Here, white chalk on black paper.
