Interview with LYSM x SACHIKO (FLiP) | Their first mini album ∞ shows a fresh new side, with SACHIKO’s feelings entrusted in the five members (October 26th, 2022) [Natalie Interview Translation]

LYSM’s first mini album “∞” has been released. The idol group that celebrated their 1st anniversary in August of this year, LYSM. In their first mini album “∞” you can catch a glimpse at LYSM’s various sides, from pleasant pop numbers to live-like upbeat songs, compositions of various tastes have been recorded. To commemorate the release of “∞”, Ongaku Natalie has interviewed LYSM. We also met with SACHIKO (FLiP), who has worked on many of LYSM’s songs, including ones from the mini album like “Disconnection Code”, “BABY BABY”, and “One Room Parade”. A 2022 supported by “Disconnection Code”
— It’s a bit early to summarize the year, but as the release of your first album “Love You So Much” kicked off 2022, what kind of year has it been for LYSM?
Tōmine Akari: To start, it was a big year. Right after our album’s release, each of us got covid one after another. During the most important time for us, we had to cancel and postpone various events and lives. With that timing, not being able to work was a bit tough for us mentally.
Kuon Maria: Since it was the timing of “LYSM starts now!”
Amabe Rinka: We weren't even able to do a live at Shimokitazawa Shangri-La, which was the venue of our debut live. But at the tour final of our next tour (“LYSM 1st ONEMAN TOUR REVENGE ~Digital Single ‘Disconnection Code’ Release Tour”, held from April to June), we were able to do one again at Shangri-La, which was the live this year that has left the most impressions.
Akari: Before that tour, in addition to the streaming release of “Disconnection Code”, we held four consecutive days of free lives in Kanagawa, Osaka, Aichi, and Tokyo. It was pretty tiring with that kind of schedule, but it left a lot of impressions because of that. Now there’s a lot of new fans, I think it was really an event that left a memory that we have the power to get fans.
Ichimiya Emma: We had the tour and regular lives and various things kept going at a fairly quick pace, so I felt a chaotic “oh no, oh no” feeling as I was thinking of how to maintain this state of mind. But thanks to “Disconnection Code” I felt like “alright, we can do this song at a one-man!”
LYSM
— As your free time was spent thinking about all the things you should do and you couldn’t sort out your feelings, “Disconnection Code” became a key point for your image, right?
Akari: That’s right.
Emma: For sure, it feels like the song itself has become really special to us.
SACHIKO (FLiP): I’m glad!
Akari: Since the melody until now had a totally different feeling, can it be said that singing the song is like playing the role of the protagonist in a video game? …That could be said about the entire mini album. I think “playing a role” may have become one theme of the mini album. On stage, we each play our own parts and I think that’s really important in terms of creating the best performances. I feel like it’s been a year in which we noticed that.
Did you entrust LYSM with songs you wanted to sing?
— Since SACHIKO, who has written many of the lyrics and music for LYSM, is here today as well, it’s a great opportunity to ask: Why is SACHIKO so involved with LYSM?
SACHIKO: Is that right? (laughs) Why have I been so involved with them until now… Originally, during the time I was doing lots of lives, we had many taibans and tours with bands LYSM’s company president, Kabumoto Tetsu, had managed, so we were already acquainted. After that time, when I had stopped my band activities and my work as a musician multiplied, I had tweeted “I write really good songs, someone please let me write for them,” immediately I got a DM from him (laughs). That was how it all started. As it was right when LYSM was being formed, it was like fate. I thought I had to do my absolute best.
— So you confronted it a little differently from “simply providing music to an artist”?
SACHIKO: Yes, the LYSM team’s order gave me quite a bit of creative freedom; they only requested I stick to the emotional theme of ‘I want to convey these feelings to fans'. Since they entrusted me with the specifics of the words and shape of the melody, these songs were really easy to write. Also, the group’s approach to music is very honest and sincere, I really feel there’s overlap between their approach and mine when I was in a band. So, I have a feeling that I can honestly say that if I were in a band now, these are the kinds of songs I would be writing.

— Since you say that, for you LYSM is like a part of yourself?
SACHIKO: Ah, yes. I think it’s just like that.
Akari: Yay!
SACHIKO: It’s like I give them the kinds of songs I’d like to sing myself. There’s a great sense of ‘entrusting’. Like the song “Hanare Banare” from their 1st album was originally a demo I had made just as my band went on hiatus. I made it thinking “if I’m ever in a band again, I want to do this kind of song”, but I gave it to them.
Rinka: I’ve told SACHIKO before, but I really love ‘Hanare Banare’! The recording overlapped just as a friend had left to study abroad, so I felt like my situation and the lyrics were synchronized… (moved to tears)
SACHIKO: When you told me that story before, I also cried. And just like that, while entrusting them with my feelings, I always consciously write melodies, lyrics, expressions, and messages in which each of them can shine.
Analysis of each LYSM member according to SACHIKO
— SACHIKO, what kind of vocalists do you see each of the five members as?
Akari: I’d like to hear!
SACHIKO: Hmm… to start, Akari is definitely the “song pillar”. I think only she can create stinging tension in a song. This may be a clumsy way to put it, but I think since she’s the type of vocalist who really appeals to fans who prefer “lifespan shortening”-like emotional rock, I want her to maintain her unwavering self confidence without comparing herself to others. As that’s something you can’t do even if you wanted to.
Akari: I’m so happy I could cry. I might’ve cried a bit (laughs). Since I’m most aware of the ‘emotional’ aspect, I’m really so happy SACHIKO recognizes that too!
SACHIKO: As for Emma, I understood her when I watched a live MC, she’s very natural
Emma: (Laughs)
SACHIKO: I think comparing that naturalness to others is harmless, as she luckily relieves the tension in a song. Like even though Akari’s singing creates a stinging feeling, Emma singing just one line in between that suddenly relieves the tension just like that. I think she has that kind of position in the group, I really think she’s a vocalist who has a stress-free quality to her voice.
Emma: I’ve always thought my singing had no personality, like no matter how much I practiced, I wasn’t able to get lines, so I wondered many times “where should my voice be?”… It was a bit of a relief to be told I have such a role.

SACHIKO: Don’t worry, we all have roles to play.
Emma: (With tears in her eyes) thank you… I’ll do my best.
SACHIKO: As for Seina… recently I saw Akari say on Twitter “Is there not just one song pillar anymore?” I definitely think they are the two top pillars, but I think they’re opposite types of pillars. In contrast to the emotional Akari, Seina is cold, not emotional. That’s not to say she has no substance- rather, she has no bad thoughts, that her innocence goes straight to the heart. So I also wondered if that’s why her member color is white. Seina’s the youngest out of the members, right?
Tsukishiro Seina: I am.
SACHIKO: And since she’s the youngest, I think she’s a vocalist who can express the innocent-like parts. That might be the case when deciding the line distribution too… The company president (Kabumoto) is the one deciding that, not me, but I think she has that kind of innocence where she fits right into the not too emotional and not too cute parts. With that said, I wonder if I’ve been leaving the first lines in songs for Seina.
Seina: When we were first starting out, our choreographer also told me “your singing style goes straight into people’s hearts”, being told the same thing by SACHIKO, I thought “man it’s really that kind of feeling.” I’m even conscious of having a singing style like that, so I’m glad that feeling has been getting through.

SACHIKO: I’ve been sweating (laughs). Everyone's been giving me really serious looks…
LYSM: Ahahaha (laughing).
SACHIKO: And Maria is undeniably gorgeous.
Maria: (laughs)
SACHIKO: Her appearance and voice are totally linked, she has the most sex appeal. People’s lives come out in their singing voice, so hers makes me wonder if she’s been through a lot. Like before singing technique and everything, she was born with a “sexy” voice in the first place (laughs). In idol groups who have multiple people singing at the same time, the more varied everyone’s singing voices are, the better. In that sense, I think she’s a vocalist whose unique sex appeal can come out.
Maria: I don’t have much life experience though (laughs). I think this is the first time someone has said that about the role of my voice, I’m glad.
SACHIKO: Also, as the leader, she’s great at looking at things from a bird’s eye view. I think holding steady that kind of courage and her stage presence is a big part of her charm.
Maria: I’m glad I’ve been the leader (laughs). Since I’m quite conscious of watching everyone from one step behind them, you bringing that up has strengthened my self-awareness of my position as a leader.

SACHIKO: I’ve thought that ever since your first live.
Maria: I’m so glad.
SACHIKO: And Rinka’s member color is sure enough pink… Ahh what was it? We chatted about it just before the interview, “Walking…”
Akari: “Walking Cute and Innocent Museum”
LYSM: (laughs)
SACHIKO: Yes that (laughs). As she can play that role without being unpleasant, I think her position is that she can appeal the most to people who like “The Idol”. She understands that herself. I think out of the five, she’s the vocalist whose ‘cuteness’ comes out above all the rest.
Rinka: I’m even conscious of that myself, like even if there’s a cool song, I make sure to sing with a bit of a cute feeling. I said this in our last interview, but I originally didn’t like my own voice. Thanks to fans complimenting my voice, gradually I was able to let out my quirks without hiding them, so now I’m really glad to have been born with this kind of voice.
SACHIKO: Even though everyone’s personalities are clearly distinct, that “cute and innocent” wording is… not so good (laughs). I want you to keep up your cuteness.
Rinka: “Cute and innocent” is okay! (laughs)
Like “woah” and “wow”
— Now I’m going to ask about the new mini album “∞”. My impression after listening to each of the 5 songs is that they’re all the kinds of songs you wouldn’t expect.
LYSM: (Nodding in agreement)
Akari: There’s really a sense that all 5 songs are totally different.
— From a singing standpoint, there were a lot of quite tough parts, weren't there?
LYSM: It was tough!
Akari: Basically, the prep time between when we were given the songs and recording them was super short, so it was tough to understand the lyrics within ourselves. Also, you have to go as far as how to express it in song too, don’t you? So after going into the recording booth, I really felt we had to deepen our understanding while singing.
Tōmine Akari
— From the composition side of things, did you intend to give them something at a slightly higher level, rather than something they could do now?
SACHIKO: I didn’t have that in mind at all… perhaps the melodies I wrote were hard to sing.
Akari: They were! (laughs)
SACHIKO: I’ve been told that for a long time. I don’t think they’re hard for me… but that gap will forever be unfilled (laughs). If anything, since they gain understanding while always dealing with short recording times, I’ve been writing while conscious of trying to make the most catchy and easy to sing songs.
— With that said, did you feel surprised that they had concerns like that?
SACHIKO: That’s right. In fact, they send the tracks right after recording, every time I get a strong feeling that they can really properly sing them.
— So SACHIKO can know everyone’s concerns, could everyone tell the song they were the most concerned about?
LYSM: Hahaha
Seina: For me, “BABY BABY” was tough. At the part where the melody calms down, I was worrying about how I should put in my feelings… how I should make my low voice easy to hear, how I could resonate with people’s hearts, etc. There were just about 1 or 2 days until we recorded after we got the lyrics, so I thought “shit, what should I do, what should I do” while trying to deal with it. But each time I sang, I felt like I was able to see it little by little, so in the end I was able to record a song I was satisfied with. Like, “oh wow, I really sang well”.
Emma: For me, I think “Mugendai Actor” was the hardest. Our manager at the time told me “You don’t understand the meaning of the lyrics when you sing” and I had a strong resolution that I did understand them, but the sentiment the lyrics were written in were like ‘wow’ and ‘woah’.
Akari: Don’t just imitate the sound (laughs).
Emma: Since I understood the meaning of the lyrics, I may have linked them too much with my own feelings. But since I think it’s the song that those who hear it feel it’s the most “I got a sense of LYSM’s attitude towards life!” type of song, I want to keep singing it with the feeling that “this is LYSM!”
Ichimiya Emma
Akari: The one I had trouble with was “One Room Parade”. I’ve loved rock music from the start, so it’s all I really listen to and sing; that’s why it was hard for me to sing such a cute song cutely. Also, considering my vocal range, when it came to especially tough lines, I was at a point like “If I can barely sing it in practice, will I even be able to sing it live?” On top of that, if I tried to sing with a cute voice, no matter what my throat would tighten and I wouldn’t be able to sing. I seriously didn’t get it. The lyrics were also so cute I couldn’t identify with them (laughs), like I’m not living such a cute life!
LYSM: Hahaha
Akari: So I thought “I can’t sing this as myself” and I threw myself aside for a bit. By thinking things like “this isn’t me, this isn’t me”, “I am the cute girl in the lyrics”, “I am cute”, I was able to overcome it.
SACHIKO: You were cute.
Akari: I’m glad! (laughs)
Maria: For me, the solo part I was given in “BABY BABY” had a crazy melody…
Seina: Should you say that in front of the composer?
SACHIKO: That kind of thing is important!
Maria: (Laughs) When I heard the demo I didn’t think I could ever sing it, so when I had to go into the recording booth our company president told me “try singing this part” and I thought “ahh that’s the part I was least confident about.” But then I remembered that my previous vocal trainer had told me “Maria, it’ll all be okay as long as you stay confident in yourself” and I fought back against myself and sang. As I felt like “hey, wasn’t that good?”, I was told it was a good take.
— So you were able to experience “if you try, you’ll be able to do it” firsthand?
Maria: Yes! I got a really good experience out of it.
Rinka: My story is a little similar, I was also given a part in “Disconnection Code” I didn’t think I could ever sing. It was the second verse’s B melody, it’s the highest pitched part of the song, so I really couldn’t sing it at first. We were given direction by SACHIKO during its recording, so she went out of her way to come into the booth with me and guided me through it and somehow in just one take I was able to sing it. After that, I was able to gradually sing it live, so I feel like I’ve been able to grow along with the song. It was also the song in which I was able to come back to the hardest part, so I have a strong attachment to it.

I want them to take 1 to 100
— So, tell us about your enthusiasm towards the “∞” release tour happening from October to November
Maria: First and foremost, I want our final performance at Shinjuku FATE to be sold out. FATE is the livehouse we’ve been able to make our home, so it’s a really precious place to all of us. That’s why I definitely want it to be sold out.
Akari: We haven’t experienced a sold out live before and I know how tall of a hurdle it is to sell out, but it’s precisely for that reason that we’ve decided to say our goal outloud.
— It’s not just in the music, it’s because you want to keep challenging “a little bit bigger than us” in other areas like that too?
Akari: That’s right! But FATE is our home, so I think it’s a venue that even out of those who wouldn’t come see a normal LYSM one-man would think to come just because it’s at FATE. So I want to do a tour where our doors are wide open, so even that kind of casual audience is able to come.
Emma: Also, for me, since it’s a tour that includes a triumphant return hometown live… actually while saying that I realized everyone has a triumphant return hometown live on this tour.
Seina: I don’t (laughs).
Akari: Yeah, there isn’t actually a tour stop in Yokohama.
Emma: (Laughs) Rather than being like “we’ll do this kind of live!”, I just really want people to come see and hear us. I’m really excited to see what kinds of reactions we’ll get for our new songs.
Rinka: Since I’m from Tokyo, I haven’t even had one triumphant return live…
— LYSM’s based in Tokyo, so there’s no such thing as a “triumphant return” for you?
Rinka: Yes (laughs). But even though I say I’m from Tokyo, I’m not from any of the 23 wards, so if we even did a live in a place like Kichijoji, it’ll feel like a hometown live (laughs). A live in Kichijoji isn’t included in the tour though, but next tour I’d like to try to do a live in Kichijoji… wait this isn’t about this tour (laughs). Well, since this is our first tour where we have 3 new songs, I want to say “look forward to the new LYSM!”
LYSM
Maria: Also, this is a bit private, but a new manager joined us in October. LYSM will be breaking into our 2nd year too, so we’ll be growing together. I think we’ll get along well with our new manager before the tour.
Akari: Have we not gotten along well with her yet? (laughs)
Maria: We’ll just get along even better.
Seina: I also planned to say that we’ve entered our 2nd yearrrr.
Maria: Well then you can take it. Let’s make it something you said (laughs).
Seina: Ahh alright, alright (laughs)… Ah, that’s it! In our mini album there’s 2 songs in which I’m in charge of the lower harmony of the main melody… the lower harmonies are tough, aren’t they? So as a new challenge in this 2nd year, I’d really like to have a presence where I’m able to support our song pillar Akarin from below. It’s a personal goal, but in order to go higher as a group, each of us must get stronger.
— Thank you. SACHIKO, do you have any encouraging words for the five?
SACHIKO: When I was able to go see your 1st anniversary live in August, during “Haru ni Tou, Kimi ni Kou” I really felt a sense of unity in the venue, I ended up crying so hard even people around me noticed. LYSM raised that song to such a level that their singing power was undeniable, and with such sincerity too, to be able to do that is really an amazing thing. From now on, I’d like you all to raise all your songs to that level, I think only LYSM can do it. You’ve gone past going from 0 to 1, so I’d really like you all to take your 1 to 100.
LYSM: Thank you! We’ll do our best!

SACHIKO: It feels close to something like that doesn’t it? That’s why I am able to write lyrics with words I want all of them to sing, without embellishing them.

LYSM [Love You So Much] Interview | Not spoiled by being an idol, the group without a gimmick’s 1st album releases (January 12th, 2022) [Natalie Interview Translation]

The 5 member idol unit LYSM released their 1st album “Love You So Much”.
Debuting in July last year with the digital single “Neon de Hanataba wo” and having their first stage that August, LYSM has since kept the pace up debuting new music nearly monthly. Keeping with their momentum, they’ve already completed a full album half a year after debut. For this album, SACHIKO (FLiP), Umeda Takayuki (ex. SHIT HAPPENING), and Onozaki Kenta (ex. SHIT HAPPENING) worked on the included 9 songs. In this debut interview on Ongaku Natalie, the five not only discuss the album, but the details of their formation, each member’s personality and view’s on idol, and their future prospects.

Until you can do LYSM
— Firstly, please tell us about the details of the group’s formation. To start, I heard it started when Emma first got into the company.
Ichimiya Emma: That’s right. Originally, I was part of a self-produced group from my hometown of Akita, but with the timing of the other member(s) continuing their studies, we knew we couldn’t keep up with the same pace of activities as before, so I decided to go to Tokyo. There, while I was searching for work, I found the audition for our current company.
Kuon Maria: I was the next to get into the company. I didn’t know anything about the idol industry, but because a friend was in a chika idol group, I watched her lives and told her “I also want to stand on stage.” That’s when my interest started. Around that time, I went to a SPARK SPEAKER live by chance and found out their company was recruiting members for a new group, so I applied. From the start, I’ve had the thought of “I want to stand where I could be seen by the public eye.”

LYSM
— It looks like there was quite a bit of time between then and until the 3rd person, Akari, joined, so what were Maria and Emma doing in that time?
Maria: We started and are still doing a YouTube channel called “Emaria Channel”, we were primarily doing that then. The two of us came up with a plan. Until we could do the group, it was wrong to do nothing, we just had a feeling of wanting to do something.
Emma: After that, we had to take dance lessons and do voice training, though to be honest I had a feeling of “what are we doing?” (laughs). These really are idol activities aren’t they? I got super nervous. But, the fact was that the fans of the previous group were waiting for us, so I got a feeling like “I’ll definitely cling to Tokyo!”
Tōmine Akari: Before, I used to do activities in another group, but I withdrew. While I was thinking “what should I do from here?” I saw the audition website and found the company. Originally, this was the company Tsubasa Fly was under, and because I really like WACK idols, I knew there was something like a link between SCRAMBLES and Tsubasa Fly. And so, I thought I’d audition for the company.
Amabe Rinka: I was the same. I really loved Tsubasa Fly’s “Life is Beautiful” so I thought “if I get in this company, I might be able to sing a song like that” and applied.
Tsukishiro Seina: I didn’t know anything about the industry, but like Maripi (Maria) I also had a friend that was an idol. The moment she stood on stage, she looked like a totally different person like “wow!” and I was inspired. Since I’ve had a dream of standing on stage ever since I was little, I thought “I’ll try being an idol too” and applied.
Akari: After me, those two got in at about the same time and we became the current 5.
Maria: That was February of 2021 right? It’s almost a whole year already isn’t it.
— Why did everyone want to become idols in the first place? Maria and Seina have already said theirs, what about the other three?
Akari: At first I acted in plays. In my school days, I thought “I want to make a living doing plays”, but a friend at the time invited me to be part of a BiSH cover group. That was the turning point. I’ve always liked singing and dancing, so I felt like “singing and dancing in front of others is fun!” for the first time. And so, I completely shifted from plays to idols.


Tōmine Akari
Emma: In my case, in high school the first idols I got into were Dempagumi.inc. At the time I was socially withdrawn, but I saw they were in a similar situation with a shining appearance and that really made me feel better like “I want to be like them too!” After that, I came to like idols. At an idol festival I saw in my hometown, I came to really get into Bellring Shoujo Heart. From there, the thought of “I want to become a live idol too!” was born too.
Rinka: I really liked ℃-ute and Team Syachihoko (currently TEAM SHACHI) and ever since I was little I’ve wanted to become an idol. Though I never said that to my parents. At first, I kept my activities a secret from my parents, but on one occasion I invited them to see a live and they said to me “You seem to have more fun doing this.” And so, I was able to decide “I want to become an idol without getting a job. I want to continue like this.”
The 5 person group’s roles
— Tell us about everyone’s roles in the group. To start, what kind of presence does Maria, the leader, have?
Akari: It feels like she’s everyone’s mother (laughs). Looking at her visuals, she looks super flashy, but in fact she’s super familial. She often looks after everyone and dependably offers emotional support and such. She has a presence that supports the members.
Maria: 😅 [TN: this is the only way I can think to translate what she says]
Akari: Also, she’s in charge of being approached by foreigners in Shinjuku.
Maria: Ahahaha, whenever we go to a livehouse in Kabukicho, without fail, a foreigner tells me “Nice body!” There’s never been a time when that hasn’t happened (laughs). I don’t understand why there’s that appearance and that disconnect, but there was buzz on TikTok about my “How to take out the tendon of a chicken tenderloin” video. I only think the fact I can cook is surprising, so I’m really grateful for my looks (laughs).


Kuon Maria
— Well then, what is Akari in charge of?
Akari: If we’re talking about performances, it’s singing.
Emma: Well, behind the scenes she’s in charge of being talkative I think.
Rinka: She’s really always talking isn’t she.
Akari: I often butt in. Since we have people who act like idiots (pointing to Emma and Rinka) and natural airheads (pointing to Maria and Seina).
Emma: Ahahaha, certainly (laughs).
— How about Emma?
Akari: I think she’s the mood maker. Or rather, she always acts like a fool (laughs) and makes the place brighter so the air doesn’t get heavy.
Maria: But she’s the worst at getting up.
Emma: (Laughs) I certainly get told often I’m the mood maker.
Seina: And drawings, she’s really talented.
Akari: She’s drawn illustrations for our music videos and this album’s cover.
Emma: I drew the background illustration [for the album cover]. When I became an idol, I didn’t think I’d use this skill, but I’m happy to be helpful in various ways. During the time of the audition too, I didn’t talk at all about my drawings.
A group where each color comes out
— So, how about Seina?
Akari: She’s the youngest child, everyone treats her like a stupid brat (laughs).
Seina: I’m not a stupid brat! Please say “youngest child-like”.
Emma: At first, she was really obedient, but then we spoiled her too much. Now she has a completely cocky feeling (laughs).
Seina: For now, I want to lead everyone in dance. From around second grade, I spent 8 years doing synchronized swimming, that experience is still alive today. When I became an idol, I really felt like “I’m glad I did that” for the first time.
— Certainly, it seems like a “team competition that uses your whole body to look beautiful” has a lot in common with group dancing.
Seina: That’s right. It’s probably almost the same. So when I started these activities, that painful daily practice finally paid off.
— Lastly, what is Rinka in charge of?
Emma: She’s in charge of being lovely, or rather being an idol. She has a presence that raises all of LYSM’s idol level.
Akari: But, like that even though she acts innocent and helpless and is cute, funnily enough she’s really stoic. She’s the type to suggest something like “Ahh, this wasn’t funny! I want to redo it one more time!”
Rinka: So, I’m jealous of Emmataso (Emma). Because she’s properly calculated and funny.
Emma: Stop it (laughs).
Rinka: I want to be able to say funny things too.
Seina: Is that what you’re going for? (laughs)
Akari: That and video editing. On LYSM’s YouTube channel our variety videos are all edited by Rin-chan (Rinka). Since she understands all the member’s interesting points, everyone’s personality comes out perfectly in the editing.
Rinka: I’ve liked video games from the start and was raised watching various let’s players’ videos. So when I got a PC I thought “I want to try that too!” and I have been showing my friends my own edited videos. It’s like Emmataso’s illustrations, I didn’t think that experience would live on in my idol activities.


Amabe Rinka
— The fact is that these five, rich in personality, have come together as LYSM, but when you hear “What kind of group is LYSM?” How do you answer?
Akari: By no means can it be expressed in a few words. These various people have happened to come together. At first I was thinking “I wonder if these five would be able to properly become one group?”
Maria: Until now, isn’t it rare for a group to have each member’s character clearly defined? Even if we’re all wearing the same costume, we’re a group where all the members have such disconnected personalities that one can understand at a glance. The five’s colors perfectly come out.
Emma: Everyone’s colors are vivid.
— I certainly feel that. When a new idol group emerges, it’s likely that it’s hard to distinguish the members (laughs), but with LYSM there was really no trouble.
All: I’m glad! Yay!
An album that makes you think “I want to learn more about LYSM”
— And now, you’ve already released your 1st album “Love You So Much”, what’s your current state of mind like?
Maria: I think that even though we haven’t even done activities for a whole year, having 9 original songs is a fairly quick pace isn’t it? The audience also tells us that “the lives with a lot of songs are fun.” I’m really happy about that.
Akari: Since each song has a totally different feel, like how “what kind of group” can’t be expressed in a few words, “what kind of music” can’t be either. I think that’s an interesting point isn’t it.
Maria: I think since all 9 songs have a different type, rather than knowing that “LYSM has this kind of vibe”, I know it’s more like “I don’t know” (laughs). So, I think it’s an album that makes people think “I want to know more”, isn’t it.
— How about the production? Were there any hardships, plans, etc.?
Seina: “LYSM” was the first song recorded, but…

Maria: Yes, the first song we released was “Neon de Hanataba wo”, but in fact the first song we recorded was “LYSM”.
Rinka: We were given the lyrics to it the day of recording weren’t we? I was surprised like “Huh!?”
Akari: That’s right (laughs).
Seina: It was the first time I had done a recording and my first time I got in a booth to sing too. I was very nervous, I had a sense it was like I was in a dream. I didn’t know if I could sing like I carefully practiced, but since the thought of “our 5 member LYSM starts from here” was put into it, I want people to listen to this song the most. I like “LYSM” the most.


Tsukishiro Seina
Maria: During “LYSM”’s recording, people around me said something like “you’re stiff”, I was nervous. When the recording was over, I was in a daze.
— From there, recording experience has piled up, you’ve gotten used to it, haven’t you?
Seina: Yes, the most recent recording was “Haru ni Tou, Kimi ni Kou”. I think I can relax now so I was able to record the best one yet.
Emma: Maripi has changed greatly. It’s like she was a different person during the time of “LYSM”.
Akari: Your voice when you first tried standing in front of a microphone has totally changed. You had a good voice from the start.
Maria: Since I was only focused on doing my best during “LYSM”’s recording, I thought it was bad to stay like that. Reflecting on it while commuting to and from voice training, gradually people around me have been saying more and more “you’ve gotten good!” Even now I have a desire to do even better.
— Now, even if you enter the booth, are you able to keep calm?
Maria: No, not at all.
All: Ahahaha
Seina: Certainly, Maripi is always nervous.
Emma: Returning to this look, she’s the most nervous person here.
— How about everyone else? During the recording of the 9 songs, were there any points where you felt change or growth?
Akari: When listening to the songs again, sure enough “LYSM” and “Haru ni Tou”’s ways of singing are totally different. Since before LYSM I’ve always done singing, the idea that “my singing is like this” had solidified, but I was surprised at how that has changed. Like I’ve become able to reliably convey my feelings, or rather, I feel like the type of voice I make is different from when I first started. And if we’re talking about idol activities, I feel like I’ve gotten used to how to sing while dancing.
Rinka: Until now, I was thinking my voice was somehow bad. I have a little habit, I mean members and the staff like to imitate me (laughs). But the fans have told me “I like your voice” a lot, so now I think I can give my all.
Emma: For me, “Bokura wa.”’s recording particularly left an impression on me. At the time, everyone was pretty busy, we seemed to hit a wall so it was a little difficult time. When I looked at the lyrics for ‘Bokura wa.”, I thought “are these lyrics about the members’ situations?” I think it’s precisely because it was recorded during a struggling time that it’s a song filled with feelings.

If we were in an anime, we’d all be protagonists
—- Listening to this album, I got the impression that there was an emphasis on musical quality rather than the functional aspects of the music. For example, there’s usually room in the A melody for fan calls to be put in, but the songs are not made for that. Do you think that has something to do with COVID-19?
Emma: Is that right? I didn’t think that was an ingredient for idol songs. Since LYSM’s main axis is music, even though we’re idols, we didn’t want to take advantage of being idols.
Akari: The audience even often tells us “LYSM is an artist rather than an idol group” and I’m really happy about that. On the other hand, the other day in Emmataso’s hometown of Akita we had our first live where calls were OK…
Emma: There were masks and face shields.
Akari: That time was the first time fans sprinkled in MIX, it was super fun. It was a live in such a way that getting excited together was really precious, since it’s important we’re able to enjoy the music just by listening to the studio versions, I think whichever way someone is able to enjoy the music is ideal.
— In terms of LYSM’s concept being “Love You So Much”, that is to say “sending love”, that’s extremely straightforward isn’t it? During these times with idol groups, with original concepts and musicianship, it’s like a game to show off originality I think.
Akari + Emma: Yeah totally.
— It seems like LYSM isn’t like that, but people who want to compete based on good singing, good songs, and good performances.
Akari: Yes, that’s right! I think, in the end, good quality is the most important and it’s best to compete with that.
Emma: This is a weird way to put it but… if the world were an anime, I think we’d be the protagonists, or rather we want to be in that position (laughs). In LYSM, we have an atmosphere of “Let’s go grab our dream with our real merit!” we’re really proud of it.

Ichimiya Emma
— What’s your ultimate goal?
Akari: As for the goals we have, I think “we want to stand on stage at the Nippon Budokan.” Since there’s an image of lots of idols and bands having that goal, this might not be the best way to put it, but rather it’s a status symbol to stand there. Since we think the fact of having stood at the Budokan is a big deal, we also want to have that goal.
Emma: Anway, we have a hope to get big. Like “big” is equal to “Budokan”.
Akari: That’s one way to put it (laughs).
Rinka: Personally, my beloved ℃-ute had standing at the Budokan as one of their goals. I don’t mean that any big place isn’t good, but definitely the Budokan is good.
Akari: That said, BiS not being able to have their disbandment concert at the Budokan might’ve left an imprint on me. We might have a tendency to get our dreams imprinted on us by our favorite idols (laughs).
Maria: I’ve never been to the Budokan.
Seina: Me neither.
Emma: In fact, I haven’t either.
— Ah is that right? When you have your live there it’ll be your first time, wouldn’t that be super cool?
Maria: Certainly! (laughs)
Seina: I’ll do my best to get there!
Emma: I’ll save it until then!
Akari: I definitely want to go.
— Well, before that, you’ll be starting your first oneman tour “LYSM wo Kizande” shortly?
Maria: Other idol fans ask us “you’re already going on your first oneman tour?”, but I feel like we have a favorable environment to be able to do it. We’ve been doing a lot of lives, been put on a lot of streaming playlists, and have had the chance to have a lot of eyes and ears on us. In that kind of environment, I was disappointed we couldn’t sell out our 1st tour’s final in November. So this time’s final, on February 6th at Shimokitazawa Shangri-la, I definitely want it to be filled up.
Emma: Rather, our power is still yet to exchange glances with the favorable environment. At this early stage, I feel a “what should I do?”-like impatience doing a oneman tour, but there’s an album coming out too…
Maria: We want to give people who listen to the album a “let’s try going to their live” feeling.
Emma: After all, since I think lives are the best place to convey our energy, I’d like people to come to the venues and feel all of our energy live.
Akari: We won’t leave anything left over.
