Nevers has a thing for people he thinks are smarter than him. He’s easily impressed by knowledgeable, ressourceful and clever people.
I think this applies to Aurore as well(?), but doesn’t this describe Gonzague to a tee??? Just ignore all their red flags…
I mean… yeah.

If you’re still doing the OC asks, can I request the following for Peyrolles please? I’m curious because of the way they're described in-game:
💪 : What is your OC’s most physically attractive attribute?
👀 : Does your OC believe they are attractive? Do they use that to their advantage?
Well, to be completely honest, it's been long enough that I don't remember the meme this is from, lol. But since you copy-pasted the questions, I'll answer them, why not!
💪 : That's a hard question to answer, to be honest, since it can be a very subjective matter. And if you're asking for my opinion, I'm forced to say every part of them is perfect, because they're my baby, lol. But the way other people see them... I'd say their nose is the part of their features that stands out the most. Some people don't like it, others will be drawn to it. So I guess it is both their most attractive and least attractive feature, in a way?
👀 : Peyrolles doesn't exactly think they're attractive nor do they think they're unattractive. They know it depends on who they're facing. They know how to use it to their advantage, one way or the other. They prefer if they don't have to, but if it'll get the job done, it'll get the job done.

Hi Oscar! I was thinking about f!MC’s situation recently and had a few qs if that’s ok. Is her gender identity well known publicly or do people outside her close circle assume she’s a man? If he’s aware, why would Aurore’s controlling & sexist father would want to marry off his only daughter to a woman? Is same sex marriage possible and common? And if so, what did f!MC have planned for heirs if she’s afab and planning on marrying another woman (obviously before the reveal)?
Hi!
These are all questions I've given a lot of thought when I decided to make Gonzague's gender up to the player's choice.
First of all, I obviously took a big liberty here from the historical context, although it's not entirely without precedent. I recommend Kaz Rowe's video about the Chevalier d'Eon if you want to know more. In Gonzague's context, a woman or afab person taking the title of a man is uncommon, but not impossible. Historically, it probably would have made a lot more waves than the way I plan on treating it in the story, but it was not entirely impossible either. I decided to normalize it somewhat for the sake of the story.
Same sex marriage was not a thing at the time, at least not in theory. But if you are able to pass as the opposite gender, who knows? I'm not an historian so I wouldn't be able to tell you how likely and/or how often a scenario like thtat could have happened. But again, for the sake of the story, I chose to make it possible, if exceptional.
When it comes to heirs, Gonzague (regardless of their gender or agab) isn't interested in having any for several reasons. The first one is because they're mainly focused on their survival. Then there's their history with their father. They're not interested in repeating what their father have done for the sake of perpetuating a bloodline that has only caused them misery. Of course you can headcanon whatever you like about Gonzague wanting children, but in the story it won't be a goal for them at all for these reasons.
For the rest, it's somewhat up to the player's interpretations. It's possible that most people ignore Gonzague's true gender and/or agab. It's possible that Aurore's father ignores it as well. It would make more sense for a man as sexist and controlling as him, as you pointed out. But I don't want to impose that, because depending on how each player imagine their Gonzague to look like, it might not be easy/possible for them to hide their agab. So I leave it vague for that purpose, it's up to you what makes more sense for your version of Gonzague. After all, people can be contradictory. You could imagine other reasons why Aurore's father is overlooking Gonzague's sex and/or gender. Maybe the title of Prince is too appealing. Maybe it's another way of controlling his daughter. If he doesn't give her away to a man, maybe he feels like he still owns her? Sexism isn't logical after all.

hello, i hope you're doing well! I just wanted you to know i've been thinking about this story, what's written so far is just so excellent and occasionally i'm reminded of it and it really gets the gears turning, i love how the way you're writing this story really cements gonzague as a tragic character, while still leaving room for them to affect their own story. Also take all the time you need to recharge! meanwhile i think i will replay the demo because i'm in my feels rn
Thank you so much for the kind message. :) It's so flattering to think people think back on my writing and go back to revisit it now and again. I hope you enjoy your feels <3

Patreon page unlaunched
Hi!
Instead of pausing billing again this month, I decided to simply unlaunch the page. That means it won't be accessible until I decide to launch it again.
To be frank, motivation to write has been low since August/September. I've tried to push through it in November, but it simply made things worse, I'm afraid. Right now, all I can do is alleviate any pressure I might feel about writing (most of them are self-imposed, really) and take it as easy as I can until I feel up to writing again.
At this time of the year, I would usually do a bit of a wrap-up to tell you how the year went for my writing, what progress I've made. I won't do that this time, because I know it's not good. This year was stressful and did a number on my mental health to be honest, yet I still feel like I should have done better.
And that honestly happens everytime I looks at my word count for the year. Each time I feel down, feeling like I should have done more. Keeping track of word counts can be a useful way to measure your progress. It feels good when the numbers go up. But of course it feels shitty whenthey don't. It also gives you a dangerous tool to compare your output to other people's, to your past self even.
Right now, I feel like it's doing more harm than good so I'm going to try not keeping track of it at all next year, see how that works out for me.
I really hope things will get better next year. But to be honest, I'm not holding my breath. There's likely a lot of stress ahead, possibly less free time for me to write. My government is growing more and more hostile towards people who, like me, have a low income or are unemployed and it's likely to affect both my time and drive to write.
I do wish you a better 2024 and I thank you for being along for the ride so far, as bumpy as it's been lately.

Patreon billing paused for December
I'm sure it won't come as too much of a surprise. Writing is still very difficult at the moment, I only returned in November because circumstances forced my hand.
I'm currently taking another break from writing. I can only hope things will become easier soon, I'm not thrilled about getting so little progress done on each of my games. But my mental health is what it is and forcing myself is only going to make things worse.
There is another reason why dealing with Patreon has become difficult as of late: the change of policy concerning adult content. Patreon now requires all creators putting NSFW content on their page to verify their age. That involves uploading a copy of their ID to a third party website.
I'm not super comfortable with the idea, I'm not going to lie. But if I don't verify my age, Patreon will eventually stop transfering my earnings to me, unless I make the page SFW and remove all adult content from it. Which is a difficult decision to make, considering the NSFW tier is the most popular one by far.
So I need time to figure out what to do about it all.

11/17/23 Update
Hello everyone!
I’m writing this update a little early because I’ll be away this weekend and I won’t be able to do it tomorrow.
It’s been a really rough week, writing-wise. I continued writing one of the questions you will ask Armine during her date but everything felt off. I’ve thought about it and decided to rehaul the whole thing. I cut off nearly 4000 words and I’m now trying to rewrite the missing sections. I’m not entirely convinced it was the right call or if what I’m writing is going to be better, but I just couldn’t continue without trying to fix things first.
I’m feeling mentally exhausted and I want to move on from 8YR at the moment, to be honest. But I can’t really leave the story as is, or I will have a huge mess to fix when I come back to it and that’s not very nice to my future self lol. So I’m going to at least try finishing fixing up those questions and then I think I’ll go back to editing Nevers’s scene in Gonzague.
I wish you all a restful weekend!

just played the demo for the first time and firstly it was all rlly well written ofc, both the 18+ scene and the twist made me emotional for wildly different reasons.. and i kinda love Philippe chartier(apologies if misspelled) which i did not expect at all
I'm glad you enjoyed the demo and Chartres. :) I wasn't planning for Chartres to be as important as he ended up being. But I'm glad I ended up developing him more.

Some fashion references for @gonzague-if of my Prince Médée. I tried to keep a similar color scheme for her masculine and feminine attire, red, blue, and yellow/gold, although they are a lighter shade for the gown. Also, considering certain fashions were both popular with men and women at the time, like long hair, heels, cosmetics, ect. Médée prefers to go with a more natural appearance when dressed in her suits, just a touch of rouge on the lips and cheeks, her natural shoulder length waves half tied back with ribbon, simple pearl earrings and her insignia ring bearing the de Gonzague crest. It helps a lot when she wants to give off a more professional persona, as many people tend to take her more seriously when she presents herself in masculine fashion. She does still have more feminine wardrobe, too. Partly out of spite for her father, forcing her to impersonate her brother growing up, she's free of him now she can dress up in pretty gowns whenever she wishes! Granted ladies' fashion tends to be more time-consuming and elaborate, but it also has its share of uses. Médée has found it easier to get people to trust her when she presents in feminine attire, and their are advantages to having people underestimate her. Also, women's cosmetics and shape wear make it much easier for Médée to alter her appearance when she wants to avoid being recognized. A different wig or concealing her natural hair color with powder, changing up her usual clothes and makeup, adjusting her stays to make her décolletage more noticeable. Médée knows most people can be easily distracted by a pretty face and cleavage.
Tumblr media
Médée is naturally a tall woman with an athletic build and square jawline, and combined with her father raising her to be "Phillippe" throughout her teens and young adulthood, add a sharp suit and stays fitted to minimize her bustline, Médée can easily convince the Marquis de Caylus she's a wealthy man of title and education seeking Aurora's hand. Although it is interesting to imagine Chartres and Nevers reactions when Médée shared with them her real name and Pronouns. Chartres probably had an inkling early on, after all his own father used to dress in feminine attire at court, and considering his fondness for Opera and the theater, he'd be familiar with Julie d'Aubigny, and possibly may have even seen La Maupin preform at court. Nevers most likely was taken by surprise at first, believing Gonzague was just a very pretty man.

11/11/23 Update
Hi!
This week has been a little more about coding than writing. Implementing the save-to-file feature for both 8YR and Gonzague took me a bit so I ended up not writing a whole lot this week.
After I finished a scene in Armine’s date last week, I came back to the questions you can ask her. This is not the easiest part to write, to be honest. There’s a lot more variations in those and I have to add a bunch of transitions depending on what scene will come next. And as you may or may not know, transitions are the worst. I suspect it’s going to take me a while to get through this section and I might need a break from 8YR once I’m done with it.
I might do some more coding next week, if I’m feeling up to it, so writing might take a back seat again. We’ll see!
I hope you all have a nice weekend.

Mild in game spoilers, but as I was looking up more info about Le Bossu, I came across this interesting illustration of Lagardère escaping with Nevers' Baby.
Tumblr media
While I know the eventual fight and escape with little Inez is probably going to be very tense and dramatic. Honestly, my first reaction to seeing this image was to yell
"HENRI NO! THAT IS NOT HOW YOU HOLD A BABY!!! PUT INEZ DOWN SOME WHERE SAFE!"
Tbh, it's more likely that the illustrator doesn't know much about babies to begin with. Although now I keep getting the mental image of a Gonzague, who genuinely doesn't want any harm to come to Inez, freaking out more about Lagardère possibly accidentally hurting the little girl during the fight then about the mercenaries they hired losing.
I mean, sure, they did assinate their best friend Nevers so they can marry Aurore and claim her bridal dowry, but they're not a monster! Maybe they have some guilt about causing their younger brothers death and/or Gonzague holds genuine affection for either one or both of Inez parents, or maybe they believe Inez would grow into a valuable asset if they raise her as their heir.
(Please don't read this ask if you don't want to be spoiled about future events in the game!)
LMAO that picture is amazing.
I'm not sure if it's because of the illustrator's lack of knowledge about babies, though. It could be intentional. Her posture in this picture makes her look kind of saintly, like a religious figure in any case, so it could be symbolism.
But yeah, that's definitely not how you hold a baby, lol.
While in the original story it's Gonzague intent to kill Aurore's daughter as well, it's not the case in my version, or yeah, Gonzague would not be sympathetic in any way lol. But, ultimately, how Gonzague feels about Inès in the game will be up to you!

11/07/23 — Game update — Save to file feature
This update is purely technical and doesn’t add any new story content.
I added a custom macro to the game that will allow you to save your game into a file that you can download. This will provide you with a back-up, should your saves be erased from your cookies.
A few notes on how it works, please read!
Saving The ‘save to file’ link will save the corresponding slot into a file. It will only save a pre-existing save so if the slot is empty, you won’t be able to download any file. Make sure to save the usual way before downloading the file through the provided link.
Loading When loading from a file, it will overwrite the corresponding slot. You can load the file into an empty slot if you want to avoid deleting any present save.
/!\ Warning to iPhone users /!\
While the feature does work on iPhone, you may have to do a little bit of fiddling if you use Safari. Safari may add .txt to your save file when downloading it. If it does, you won’t be able to load the file into the game unless you remove the .txt extension.
To do that, you’ll have to go into your files folder, press on the file until a menu opens and choose ‘rename’. Once the name of your file is selected, tap it and a few different options should show up. Changing the extension is the very last one. Delete .txt and your file should be ready for use!
I’m sorry for the inconvenience it undoubtedly is, but there’s no way around it that I’m aware of.
Additional recommendations
I once again recommend with sticking with one of the two versions of the game. It’s especially true since, from now on, both versions will have the same IFID which is what’s used to encode the save files. That means there may be some overlap of saves between each version and you possibly can use your save files on both versions. It may however cause some bugs since the recorded progression in the save might not be the same depending on the version you played.

11/04/23 Update
Hi!
It’s going to be a short one because I still haven’t got my Internet back and I have to write this on my phone. :(
In short, despite my expectations for the worse, it’s been a decent week of progress. Not nanowrimo level of progress lol. But I was able to keep up with my usual 500 words a day.
I wish luck to everyone attempting nanowrimo (and be gentle with yourselves!), but I’m going to pass for this year.
Have a nice weekend!

Patreon billing resuming
Patreon billing is resuming as of today.
I was honestly about to pause for another month, but due to an Internet outage, I’m actually unable to do it. I guess circumstances (and Patreon’s app uselessness) decided for me. I suppose I should be glad that I was able to write a post to warn my patrons, but that’s the best I can say about Patreon’s app.
I’ll do my best to write bonus content for this month and we’ll see how it goes.
