When a Character Is Grieving Someone They Never Got to Say Goodbye To

✧ They talk about the person in past tense… then correct themselves. Then stop talking entirely.

✧ They touch things that belonged to the person like they’re fragile, sacred, about to disappear.

✧ They hoard the last voicemail, last message, last anything. Play it. Don’t play it. Just knowing it exists hurts enough.

✧ They leave something untouched, an empty seat, a half-packed bag, a coffee order that isn’t theirs.

✧ They get irrationally angry when someone else seems to be “moving on.” As if forgetting is betrayal.

✧ They don’t let themselves cry all at once. It comes in pieces. Like they’re afraid too much grief will drown them.

✧ They over-apologize. For being quiet. For being distant. For not being okay.

✧ They become hyper-aware of time, dates, anniversaries, time zones, the exact moment everything ended.

✧ They get superstitious. Ritualistic. As if doing things "right" might reverse something.

✧ They smile when they talk about the person. But it’s brittle. And it never quite touches their eyes.

A fanfic writer’s guide to weed, part 1

Because frankly, most people who write about weed clearly don’t know a thing about it.

Never smoked weed or consumed an edible?  Hey, no judgment.  It’s not for everyone.  Maybe it’s not legal in your state/country, or you’re under age, or you just don’t care for the idea of being under the influence of a psychotropic substance.  Perfectly understandable.

But if you’ve never partaken and you’re trying to write a character who does?  Believe me, it shows.

I won’t get into the more esoteric stuff here - no wax or shatter, no discussions about the merits of showerhead vs. UFO percs - nor will I address ethics, legalities, or the particulars of how to grow or obtain weed.  Think of this more as a basic primer, stuff that you should know so that your weed-smoking  character sounds and feels at least somewhat believable.  This first section will cover weed itself; subsequent sections will cover the mechanics and the effects of smoking or ingesting marijuana.

What the heck *is* weed, anyway?

Technically, you can obtain THC (the main psychoactive component) from any part of the cannabis plant, but in general “marijuana” refers only to the flower, or bud.

How much weed is in an ounce? a gram?

As with many things where weed is concerned, it depends.  Moisture content, density, strain, how it was grown, whether or not it was properly dried and cured, how it has been stored, etc. all play a role in how much your bud actually weighs.  This infographic from Leafly (which is an excellent resource for info on individual strains) is a good general reference:

Dispensaries always sell by the gram, probably to dissociate themselves from weed’s pre-legal past, but if you buy from a dealer, there are well known slang terms (with some regional differences) for various quantities:

nickel: 0.5 grams dime: 1 gram (in some places a "dime” refers to $10 worth of weed, whatever that may be locally) dub: 2 grams eighth: ⅛ ounce, or 3.5 grams quarter: ¼ ounce, or 7 grams half: ½ ounce, or 14 grams zip, zone, O, or lid: 1 ounce, or 28.35 grams

How many joints can you get out of X amount of weed?

Again, it depends.  These days you can find specialty papers that allow you to roll joints of just about any size or shape; you can also stick papers together to create a wider or longer size if you like.  It also depends on the quality of your weed, how finely and evenly it’s ground, your skill level and dexterity, and so forth.  A good ballpark guesstimate: the typical joint rolled with a typical paper contains about half a gram of weed.  So using this as a rough measure, you can get about 56 joints out of an ounce.

How can I tell good weed from crappy weed?

This is actually not all that difficult, even for a novice, once you know what to look for.  Sometimes, unfortunately, you simply can’t judge the quality of your weed until you’ve actually consumed it, but in general, good weed is:

Green.  Color variations are always possible and some excellent strains have tinges of purple, orange or red, but for the most part your weed should be green, NEVER brown.

Neither too dry nor too wet.  If it crumbles instead of compressing together, or if it doesn’t feel sticky, or if it feels super-light, it’s too dry.  This usually indicates that it’s poor quality, too old, or it’s been improperly stored (or all three).  If it feels soggy, it hasn’t been properly cured and won’t break up well; it will also be prone to mold.

Covered in little hairs and crystals.  Look for lots of fine hairs, or trichomes, that cover every part of the buds; the trichomes are where all the plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes (AKA the good stuff) are made.  The presence of crystals, or resinous deposits of THC from the trichomes, is an indication of good quality weed that has been handled properly.  The best weed will have a frosty appearance:

Stinky.  Good weed has a very potent odor, so strong that you can easily smell it through even a heavy-duty ziplock bag.  “Skunky” is probably the most common descriptor that comes to mind, but good weed can also have hints of diesel fuel, citrus fruit and berries or grapes.  If it has only a faint smell, or if it smells moldy or grassy or “off” in any way, it’s no good.

Properly trimmed.  There should be no leaves or sticks, and very few (if any) stems or seeds.  Trimming buds in preparation for curing is something of an art; well-trimmed buds are a good sign of quality product that has been carefully handled.
