So I watched puss in Boots the last wish about an hour ago and uh. I have a game theory
Tumblr media
Hook is a canon character in the Shrek universe, i.e. him being the piano player/singer at the Poisoned Apple in Shrek 2, so I have to assume that this is likely him coming to Puss's big celebratory party at the start of the film. (And aw if that's true isn't it so cute that he chooses to give a puss a step on his hook like aww) I mean it COULD be some other person that conveniently has a hook for a hand, but I can dream. Also,
Tumblr media
Either Jack Horner fucking killed him or he just stole James's prosthetic right off of his hand lmao

"Silver Minnow? Gilded Rose? Uh, Glory Aurora?" She rapid fires the names, though in truth she'd thought about this particular topic for a long time coming.
He crinkles his nose, "Glory Aurora is a good one. The other two..." He mutters to himself, "a general rule? Do not try to name a vessel anything that's going to sound too... What's a good word for it..."
"Awesome?" Wendy suggests.
He nods once, "Yes. If you're trying to name a ship something," he raises both his hand and hook, forming a half air quote. Wendy giggles at this. "Awesome," he scowls at her giggling, "or too overt, then going for something hard-hearted is just going to sound dumb coming out of your mouth at the nearest port."
There's a pause. "But you like Glory Aurora?" The little girl asks deftly, eyes sparkling with wonder at her success.
The captain sighs, defeated. "Yes."

To me, hook would never think to actually do something like that to Wendy, or anyone else for that matter. I think what makes him "not wholly unheroic" is that he actually DOES have morals, he has good qualities to him. Namely in that he's a gentleman, or at least tries very hard to be. I don't think Hook preys after women or girls of any age, it just doesn't slot into his character for me. Is he charming when he finds the motivation to be? Of course. But at his best, he is a gentleman, and not only is he a gentleman, but even without the veneer of one, he's just not the type to do anything that evil or extreme. At a baseline, at the very center of his character, I think he'd be highly opposed to doing anything like that to anybody.
Also, why would he even do that or feel any particular need to do that? The idea of Hook escalating to full on assaulting Wendy doesn't even feel like it's the same character anymore. It's just glueing together the worst possible thing a person can do, pasting it onto James, and saying 'well he's the bad guy so of course he'd do something like this because he's evil' even if it doesn't make sense
Just a reminder. Hook is on Neverland of his own free will, hunting a child. Hook made a poisonous cake to kill children. Hook wanted to kill the boys and take the girl. I am highly sure Hook wanted something else from Wendy. 2003 Peter Pan was not afraid to show that.
Tumblr media
When he lost his cool Infront of children, he wanted to whip the skin off of them. Then drown them.
Hook is a villain.

Honestly I think in retellings it should be an equal mix of both as far as darkness, I think if anyone should shoot for a "dark fairytale" inspired re write it should be in the same vein as something like maybe Pans Labyrinth
Also I have complicated feelings about how fans tend to characterize hook
Cannot tell you how sick I am of people writing Peter Pan-inspired YA novels that make Peter the villain or Neverland some dark wasteland where creepy murderous/sexual things happen. Stop it. Peter's just a little boy who doesn't want to grow up. Wendy is a child who does not need to be turned into the next bland feminist icon. Hook is not the hero no matter how much you thirst. Neverland is not Peter's demonic sex house. It's just an island with magic and pirates and Indians. Stop it. You're not cool. It didn't need improving. You're not original. This is the fantasy author's equivalent of a Hot Topic emo phase. Be embarrassed. Leave Peter Pan alone.

Does anyone have any references for the English lexicon in the 1600-1700s, because while I can read something from that time and have an idea of what people sounded like in day to day speech, I feel like there's a big difference between writing and speaking style

It is 10:36 on a winter morning, and he feels like dying. Or like he's already died, and has been forcibly resurrected.
He shifts in the cot. It is not his normal bed, no lovely comforter, or piles of pillows, no lantern close by to keep him company in the dark. A single white candle is by his bedside. He grimaces when he feels a sting in his wrist.
He tries to lift his head from its lying position, but he immediately is awash with nausea, dizziness so strong he sees double, and his eyes feel detached in his skull. His head makes a thud against the cot as he gives up the fight for an upright posture.
He squints in the dark, presumably the darkness that lays in the barracks of the ship. The Captain groans aloud when his guts twist and turn inside of him, the monumental urge to vomit overcoming every other sensation as he peels himself over the edge of the cot, throwing up bile and what may be water all over the wooden planks. His head screams in pain. Every limb feels like it is made of lead, his eyes barely able to focus on anything.
He wants to call out for Smee, but his voice is snared in his throat. His chest tightens.
Something is horribly wrong with him. He can feel it, he can feel the imbalance on his person, something is wrong, something is horribly wrong. His hands scramble to grab the sheets and pull them off, maybe he can make it out onto the deck, he needs to find Smee, he feels so sick—
His hand slides off the sheets.
Did his hand slide off the sheets?
His heart jumps to a harsh drum-beat in his chest, so loud he can hear it in his ears, feel it in every portion of his body as it thump thump thumps. His eyes feel glued open in terror.
His left hand moves the sheet. Grips it like normal. Everything is unremarkable about it as it was before. Unassuming. Not a finger missing or anything.
He moves the sheet from his right hand, and screams when he sees the burned stump.

When the Jolly Roger does sail, it is awash with the rough harmony of sailor's songs. Anything from Drunken Sailor, to Way Me Susianah, to Roll Boys Roll, to Fish In The Sea, and more. Of course, Hook being who he is and with his attitude, he says he hates the singing, calls it juvenile. But honestly, he likes it, it's kind of hard not to. That being said, he almost never joins in. Hook doesn't really sing that much at all to begin with, but the thought of doing so with his crew embarrasses him.
