yup ! luyong is definitely someone not above shady means of getting what they want. they are mischievous at heart and unlike the genuine nature spirits and gods of harvest and rain –  a facade ,  a self - made deity as a means to really separate herself from being associated with the great dragon who rose and devoured the sky. 

anemone :   how does your muse view the world ;   as a cruel   &   unforgiving place ,   a land full of wonders ,   or something in - between ? where does that world view come from   (what experiences ,   life lessons ,   etc .) ?

luyong is… honestly curious of humanity ,  she lives among them to try and gather their knowledge and customs and traditions. they aren’t necessarily one to truly love humanity as a deity does their people … luyong honestly views them so piteous ,    and like playthings that must always need their ‘helping’ hand.  like ,  even as humanity progresses and learns to sail the seas and the rivers ,   luyong believes that they still would lean on ‘deities’ like them should there be the eve of divine wrath ,   or an uncontrollable storm that even they may not be able to brave. 

begonia :   how cautious is your muse ?are they prone to noticing red flags ,   or paranoid to the point of untrusting most everyone ?why or why not ?

i think luyong is pretty cautious … but mostly of the mischievous celestial denizens than humans.  especially ones that are more primordial …. but yeah they are!! especially if you do have an agreement with them ,   that’s where they’re like.. u better be holding up ur end of the bargain.

hiraya was originally a nameless thing that dwelled within the seas by the gates of the underworld ,   a minor water spirit that had escaped amidst the rage of laho ,  the eclipse - causing dragon. 

they went through three names before arriving at one to live amongst humans by. 

laho. -  a glimpse and miss it. they have found that the name was only invited thoughts of misery and misfortune. 

daluyong. -  after crawling out of a cove to an island port city ,   they were said to ‘emerge from the waves of the sea’. 

hiraya. -  the fruits of one’s hopes and dreams. though they believe humans to be playthings ,  they still were the one who forged a river route safe enough for voyagers’ trade ships to pass. hiraya is a water dragon inspired by a local myth about a water dragon that resides by the river who forged the pasig river in exchange for voyagers’/traders’ souls because they asked for a safer route.  the rest of their characterization is based on my own lore.

maritime southeast asia has history tracing to voyagers and much of that will be reflected in this original character;  voyaging ,   jade crafting ,  as well as rice cultivation were important aspects of their culture. 

they live on an island lush with different flora and fauna, as a voyager – many ships come and go to the settled island ,   deemed as a popular trading post. 

river dragons / naga are venerated ,  but the moon eater is considered a calamity. luyong’s lore is loosely based off of a story about a river dragon that moved the water and the mountains to create a safe route for ships to pass. 

the nature spirits are wild and free ,  and while some may consider luyong a nature spirit, at their core – they are a self serving being.  

water is and will be a recurring theme :  its importance and how it connects people in both the physical sense (travel, nourishment) and spiritually.

okay i actually did a little bit more research and i was right! the bird is sometimes interpreted to be amihan!

one interpretation of the mythology for amihan is that they lived in the court of heaven with bathala and aman sinaya when the world only consisted of the wind, sea, and sky as one of the first inhabitants .... another story called tigmamanukan being the one to crack open the bamboo plant to set free the first humans, which is similar to the story that aligns with amihan being the one to set free the first two humans from the bamboo plant.
