New Years 2025 marked the 20th anniversary of my first trip to Japan. I spent three weeks in Hannō city in Saitama prefecture as an exchange student and was completely changed by the experience.
I wanted to recreate a photo I took at the Yamiyanagi Inari Shrine during the New Years festivities. I remember walking there as it was beginning to snow and being handed a warm Amazake. The community spirit was strong in the small town, and people of all ages gathered at midnight to offer their prayers for the year.
Far from home, I was moved by the atmosphere of festivity and the moment of cultural significance, and it remains one of my most cherished memories.

Fan animation of The Magic Pudding by artist Norman Lindsay.
Norman Lindsay - one of Australia's greatest artists - was well known for his etchings and political drawings, often depicting aristocratic and working class societies using anthropomorphised animals.
Along with many others, I believe The Magic Pudding is more than just a children's story of 'food and fighting' but an allegory about the ownership and economics of colonial Australia. Like Albert the never-ending pudding, the land that half a century later was coined 'The Lucky Country' has been seen as an imagined endless and infinite resource for whoever would desire to stake the most claim over it.
'It's all very fine,' said the Puddin' gloomily, 'singing about the joys of being penguins and pirates, but how'd you like to be a Puddin' and be eaten all day long?'

Last summer I challenged myself to make a 4K looping fan animation featuring Tank Girl and Booga in all their bogan glory.
Here’s a link to the hi-res version that accompanies a one hour Aussie punk/rock playlist: https://vimeo.com/888631020
