  This cold wall again... How long has it been? Days, weeks... years? Everything seems different in this crystal... Time flies so slowly, so differently... It's so dark and damp all around... She must have been locked in some basement under the supervision of the military police, the same one she once served in. Armin would come here from time to time, or that weirdo scientist, Hanji Zoe - that's what the deputy called her. And then there was that shorty, Captain Levi. He wasn't hard to remember either: she had already grabbed Eren when he and Mikasa had attacked and almost killed her. She had been so close to coming back... Back home... To see him again, to see her father... And what awaited her now? If she went outside, she'd be interrogated, just like Hanji had promised. She'd managed to slip out of her grasp then, but could she do it again? Probably... Probably she would never be able to go home again... Father, I'm so sorry....

Chapter 20. The moments before Inevitable

Surprisingly, the voices below sounded clear enough. Golden fur covered huge paws that ended in claws. A cat? A dog? Slowly lifting his right paw upward, Smith was surprised to find that those claws were easily capable of digging through the ground. Was he as capable of crystallization as the others?

"It's... It's a lion... Just like in Grandpa's book... The largest cat alive. It has a long, thick mane that covers about a third of its body. Predator. Its main weapons are sharp fangs, paws, and its loud roar can incapacitate the enemy," Armin explained.

   In response to these words, the Titan opened its mouth and tried to roar. The sound was so loud that most of the people on the ground covered their ears in horror. The frightened birds whose peace they had just disturbed took to the sky.

"Damn, I thought I was going deaf," Connie hissed. Hanji was frozen in place, staring at the Titan with her mouth open, saliva dripping from the corner of his mouth.

"Oh... My... God.... This is..."

"Hey, Four Eyes, stop drooling on another man," Levi said grumpily, but Zoé didn't hear his words. All her attention was on the body of the titan standing in front of her, which she was actively exploring, sniffing and tugging at every hair on the giant paw.

"Hhhhhuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... It's... It's just... Erwiiin!!! Holy crap, how... How... How handsome you are!!!" she shrieked. Levi snorted unhappily. - "It will take me forever to examine you! What a fur, fangs, claws, this is a real heaven!!!"

"Major seems to have found herself a new toy," Jean held back a chuckle. Taking advantage of the ODM, she jumped right onto the furry nose.

"Can you hear me?" Hanji's torrent of questions continued unabated, only growing more intensive with each passing second. "You can see me clearly, can't you? Can you understand me?"

"YES, HANJI."

What...? Can I talk in this form? It's not bad at all... It's not bad at all...

"This... This is beyond all my expectations!!! You can talk too! I... I... I... I have to ride you!!!" Hanji struggled to keep her balance as a loud snort echoed through the forest and the titan's body shook with laughter. Without waiting for a response, she deftly jumped onto its back and lay right on its thick fur, laughing.

"Armin," taking a few steps towards Levi, Smith froze in place and turned around. "How does this happen?"

"You will be guided only by your instincts. After waking up, you won't remember anything, so you'll need at least some rest. We can't say exactly what kind of animal it will be, because it depends on the psychological qualities of the bearer. Maybe a horse, maybe a cat, maybe something else."

"He's as much a horse as I am a prostitute,” Nile teased his friend loudly. "You'll be a sheep with bushy eyebrows."

"I say it'll be a cat!" Hanji immediately argued with Nile's conclusion.

"I never thought I'd be able to watch a man gain the power of a titan,” said Pixis, who, by the look on his face, was getting ready to see a real show.

"Let's say that is true. How exactly are you going to do that?" Historia asked, sitting down next to Erwin. "And why do you want to do it?"

"I have a plan, which I will agree to reveal if you and I reach a certain agreement. All I can say about my personal motivations is that as an Eldian, I wish the same for my people as you do."

"You can wipe your own ass with the one nation argument,” Levi snorted. "Why the hell should we believe you?"

  Still... That strange feeling in his chest didn't want to leave him. Without holding back a smile, Erwin rubbed his nose gently against the baby's nose.

Even he wasn't spared, although never considered himself as handsome.

"Hey, ladies, would you get us some water, please?" Jean shouted cheerfully, realising that he had become the object of women's attention. "We are sooo thirsty!!!"

Before he could even blink an eye, the angry little Smith slammed the glass object against the table with all his might, causing the blue liquid to smear on him, the papers, the table, and Erwin's costume as well.

Well done, Erwin. You were smart enough to bring a child into the office with ink on the desk - now enjoy the consequences.

  Seeing his father's bewildered face, the child burst into triumphant laughter.

"So it's fun for you, huh?" Erwin sighed and, taking the child in his arms, left the office in search of water.
