I’ve seen a lot of posts about The Paradise Of Thorns but none of them told me that this movie is actually about how poverty and inequality forces differently oppressed people to fight each other to the death for scarce resources and any tiny shred of dignity. There are parts of this film that I don’t think quite worked but that overarching message is a banger.
#the paradise of thorns#the paradise of thorns meta#the paradise of thorns spoilers#i am so unwell i just finished it and oh I am so so unwell#everytime there was a glimpse of hope of maybe things getting better for one or the other it just got fucked over again and again

hate when people are always like "oh audiences don't want 22 episode seasons anymore they want shorter seasons and tighter storylines!" and then you look at the shorter season and it has multiple episodes longer than an hour, sometimes even rivaling or surpassing the average length of a marvel movie, with the worst pacing known to mankind and somehow everything is still rushed , and it's like actually ☝️ i would love a 22 episode season of 25 or 40 minute well-paced episodes with an arc that unfolds at a reasonable speed and suspense over the full season's runtime. which is probably the same damn length minutewise as your 10 episode crime against god at this point.

Happy Ending the series (of analysis)
Alright, promises are made to be kept, so here is the first post of a series of analysis/ theories want to make about Happy Ending, based on the trailer and the pilot posted on Youtube.
There are a lot of things to say, but I feel like we should start at the very beginning:
What is Happy Ending about?
"Anti-fan Anawin comes face to face with Damon, the antagonist of the web novel 'Finn & Damon'." (MyDramaList)
From what the sneak peak trailer and the official pilot have showed, many of you have agreed to say that Happy Ending will very probably be a thai drama/ thriller with a serial killer, a web novel and a failed writer whose frustration over the unfolding of said web novel will probably make him take matter into his own hands (for better or for worse).
As a reminder:
Jeff plays Damon, the fictional artistic serial killer,
Barcode plays Anawin, the frustrated fan/ writer,
Mike plays Finn, the fictional policeman running after Damon,
Jorin plays Joanna, who (imo) is a doctor or a medical examiner in a hospital.
If you haven't seen it yet, or if you need a refresher, I recommend (re)watching the pilot (sneak peak trailer won't be the main focus here, but it can't hurt to watch it too hehe)
I'm also using this break to say: trigger warning for flashing lights, I will put another warning 2-3 paragraphs before the video (3 seconds) so you can skip if you have autoplay on.
And now we can move on to the fun part: ✨analyzing the trailer in a "very normal about it" way ✨
The color coding of fictions and realities
Two distinct worlds: Blue and Orange
A little disclaimer: by "orange" I mean "orange and adjacent", which will include golden, amber, and light orange.
I jump on the wagon of "there are two worlds: fiction (implied: where Damon is) and reality (implied: where Anawin is)". One thing I noticed upon rewatching the trailer was the use of colors, more specifically blue and orange.
Blue and Orange are complementary if we follow the rules of color theory. Complementary colors contrast with each other in a way that feels agreeable or "natural". They are opposed on the wheel, but they function well together. Now, let's apply this to the story.
We know that there are at least two different worlds, or realms of reality: the one where Damon lives, and the one where Anawin lives. They supposedly stand opposed to each other (fiction and reality), but also complete each other when they meet (we will get back to that later on).
Before we go any further, I'd like to point out the most common adjectives attached to these colors:
Blue: Inspiration, creation/creativity, calm, loyalty, sadness, cold, dependability.
Amber/orange: comfortable, warm, authenticity, purity, security, joy, danger, ruin.
Yellow/gold: power, divinity, inspiration, creativity, caution, danger, madness.
Green: growth, hope, life, nature, envy, corruption, poison.
Damon's color palette is made of dark and cool colors, mainly black and blue, with a hint of red. Everytime we see his figure (and I do mean his figure, not his shadow), he stands in the midst of a blueish fog emerging from darkness or in a dark environment with blue tones (cf: 0:44, 1:27 as seen below, 2:36, 4:45, 5:31)

Meanwhile, our introduction to Anawin is in a bright bedroom, bather in a golden light (1:55). Almost everytime we see him, there is a golden/amber hue around him, and the environment is clear rather than foggy. The shot at 2:42 is very warm, the light reflects a very intense, almost orange shade on the furniture and on Anawin's skin. The same thing can be said of the shot (picture beneath) when he opens his fridge at 2:58: very warm, saturated, amber-orange lights and shading.

Another thing that comforts me in this color theory is the presentation of the credits. I couldn't put too many pics because of Tumblr's limitation, but both Jeff and Mike's credits have a blueish background (with faint green/ amber tones), while Barcode's and Jorin's both have an ochre/light brown background. (5:08 to 5:16)

You'll notice that the image that shows the character before each credit also abide to this "rule"...kind of. Damon's face is lit by a warm source of light, but his shadows (i.e: under his chin) are blue.
Which leads me to another point many of you have made, a theory regarding the plot: Someone is going to breach confinment and enter the other world.
Convergence of worlds
Many of you have argued that someone (most of you believe/ want it to be Damon) will somehow escape his world, his reality, and enter the "real" world, a.k.a. Anawin's reality.
Please note how I'm alternating between "world" and "reality" because it will come in handy later on.
Once again, I am limited by Tumblr on the amount of pics I can add, but if you pay attention to the color coding, you'll notice that blue and yellow/ orange often overlap and share the screen or are alternated in the montage of the pilot (cf. 1:55, 2:37, 3:20-21, 4:53 in the police station, 5:34 in Damon's atelier, 5:38-39 with the succession between Damon and Anawin). Their opposition is quite obvious, but their complementarity is more sublte and, I belive, gives us a precious insight on the (possible) plot of the story.
The sequence we are showed of Damon painting is full of clues, not only on Damon as a character, but also on his environment, and quite possibly on his beliefs.
At around 2:39, we see that Damon is painting a bouquet of flowers. In art, these kind of paintings (flowers, foods, still objects), are known as still life*. I think the english term is really important here, because it is, to an extent, a reflection of Damon's life: something still. Damon paints until he is summoned again by his creator, his writer, to commit another crime and participate in his own narrative. His surprise/ shock upon seeing the wrapped up body flash before him at 2:54 might be more of a "oh, you caught me off guard" than a "ho, what the actual f-" kind of reaction (bold statement here). Hence why he picks up the knife and paints the body (4:27, it's very quick but if you slow it down to 0.5 you can see that he painted the body with red paint on his canva).
But the thing is, I don't think that Damon knows, exactly, precisely, that he is fictional. I think his reality, although peculiar, is very real to him. We see the odd and the strange because we know it's fiction, but he doesn't. And if we go back to the color theory, and stick to blue=fiction and yellow/orange=reality, then this scene could ve telling us two things:
Damon's life, though obviously fictional for us (and for Anawin), is very real to him;
Damon's fiction is being exposed to "the real world" (i.e.: everytime the writer uses him in a story, the reality of the writer soaks the reality of Damon).
*in French, still life are called "nature morte" (lit. "dead nature"). Little fun fact for you all <3

[TW: flashing lights in a video extract underneath this paragraph. The video might play on loop if you left autoplay on, so beware of that too.]
Then we have it the other way around: blue invites itself in the world of yellow and orange. Once again, will do a more detailed post on that, but when he is introduced at 1:55, Anawin is in a bedroom bathed in warm colors...But the walls and his shirt are both blue. We are in the real world, his real world, but we also just left the fictional world we were in with him: we were watching Finn and Damon face each other, and he was listening to his friend narrating the story out loud. We also see that Anawin is really, really invested in the story, more than his pal, which could explain him wearing a blue shirt: this fiction is wrapping him up and is becoming part of his own reality.
At about 3:05, Anawin walks up towards the TV upon hearing about the death of "Finn & Damon"'s author. We see his reflection in a round mirror with a golden frame, and while thunder is growling outside, a flashing light turns the background in the mirror blue ; more specifically, the same shade of cerulean/ turquoise blue that has been associated, so far, with Damon. A few seconds later, someone knocks three times on Anawin's door, and each knock seems to make the lights in the house flicker and take a blue tint (see video extract underneath the screenshot).

[TW: flashing lights.]
And when these two realities finally converge, mix and become one?
When blue meets yellow?
It becomes green.

This is the moment where the realm of fiction and the real world converge, become one: when the mysterious shadow brings an envelope to Anawin (and context clues allow us to safely assume it is the script of "Finn & Damon"). While the identity of this shadow remains unknown to us, it is clear that there is a breach between the two worlds, and that both Damon and Anawin are affected by it.
If you take a look at 3:40, you may notice that Anawin's shirt is green (more visible when flashed by the lightning strike). I'll do another post focusing on clothing but here is what we can say about it so far.
Another thing worth noticing is the superimposition of shots between Damon and Anawin, from the moment Anawin is told it's "just like a drama" (2:33) to this climax (3:15 to 3:40) where Damon and Anawin seem to live the same event, simultaneously, but on two opposed ends (complementarity, anyone?)
And to really cement this theory, I give you this amazing scene (6:20 up to the end) where Damon and Anawin meet.

Anawin is standing next to a fire (bright and warm, yellow/ amber shading, details visible), while Damon is approaching quietly from behind (emerging from darkness, surrounded by blue fog/smoke, face barely lit and visible, lacks details). As for the script, it is both yellow (back) and blue (front): these two characters from two different realities are about to meet, and this script is the link between the two.
Now, if we go back to the beginning of this post, and refer back to the "meaning" of each colors, I think there are some interesting remarks to make:
Damon's color palette is mainly composed of black and blue, a non-color and a cool color. Black can represent power, mystery, elegance, but also fear, loneliness and helplessness. Blue is a color for loyalty, creativity and calmness, but it is also a color for sadness, dependability, and cold.
Anawin's color palette is, on the other hand, mainly composed of warm, bright colors: yellow and orange. They stand for joy, friendliness and comfort, and could represent security and purity. But given the perspective, they could also represent illness, danger, madness and ruins.
Both gold and amber have been used in various cultures and across time as a symbol of power, of spirituality, and of divinity.
We noticed that even though Damon and Anawin each have their "main palette", there are still overlaps between the two. Damon is sometimes touched by the golden hue, and Anawin is wrapped in a blue shade.
So...What could it mean ?
Well, it could mean a lot. I think those who think Damon will escape his reality and enter Anawin's world are right. I also think that those who think Anawin will enter Damon's reality are right.
But this post is turning into a Long Post™️so I will leave it at that and come back on my theories later!
#happy ending the series#happy ending#jeff satur#barcode tinnasit#thai drama#studio on saturn#hets theory#tw flashing lights#I will post more about the colors in the clothes post#and I will also dive more into the Finn/ Joanna side of the story#because I've focused a LOT on Damon/Anawin here#mostly because they feel like the main focus#but I don't want to erase Finn and Joanna because I do have some theories about them too and I'm not saying I'm right#I'm just saying it won't hurt anyone to share them with you krkrkrrkr#I also have another post on the Third Reality coming up#(yes. The B&W world.)#but for now have a chew on this one and lemme know your thoughts please please please#i need people to brainbloom with me on this one#i will do a proper like organized post with all the links and shit when I have more stuff out#now if you'll excuse me#i must go brush my teef and get back to writing another analysis muahahahahaa#medanalysis#ALSO!! all pictures are close-captioned I tried my best but please let me know if it's shitty or if there's something to improve on that!

Au where Kim fights in the underground rings just like Porsche, and they have this rivalry going on. And then Kim and Chay end up dating and its a whole thing when porsche finds out because 'Chay what the fuck you are literally sleeping with my archenemy who tried to actually kill me' and Kim 'oh my god im in love with my the most annoying guy i have ever mets brother'
(also Chay doesnt know Kims fighting name so he doesnt know Kim is the guy porsche always complains about)
Porchay sometimes sneaks in to make sure Porsche isn't pushing himself too far, and one time he sees Kim fight and just.
Kim is So pretty, covered in the other guys blood, a few bruises, sweaty, his hair half come out of its hair tie and sticking to his forehead, heavy breathing and just poured a bottle of water over himself to try and cool down.
Chay is carrying a first aid kit. Kim mistakes him for working in the ring to patch up the fighters and calls Chay over to help him.
Chay is being as gentle as he can, wiping the blood from Kims skin, applying a bandage to the cut on Kims forehead from when he hit the ground at one point (Kim has to make the fights look good he cant just put everyone on their ass instantly, so sometimes he takes a punch for the theatrics)
Kim talks to Chay as Chay patches him up, asking what he was doing in a place like a fighting ring when he looks so young, Chay makes up a lie that he needed money and he got offered a job to keep the fighters somewhat okay (not technically a lie he needs money, but he doesnt have a job patching up the fighters)
Kim is kinda closed off at first but as the weeks go on and Chay is there to clean him up after his fights he softens.
Porsche is more open with Chay about the fact he gets money from fighting, he tells Chay about his fights and how he got the injuries. Porsche often complains about this one fighter called Wik. Wik is clearly one of, if not the best fighter Porsche has ever seen, but he clearly just plays with his opponents, each fight is like a game to Wik. Porsche is annoyed because it doesn't seem like Wik even cares about the money, he's never seen Wik collect his prize money, Wik is just there for the thrill of toying and beating people up. Porsche hates him. Also the fact Porsche has lost every fight against Wik.
(Chay doesnt know Kim's fighter name is Wik)
Chay continues to sneak into the fights even when Porsche isnt fighting that night. Then one night, someone pulls a knife out during the fight and Kim gets stabbed. The wound is bad, not like he gonna bleed out and die bad, but it will take a while to heal. Kim was taken off guard as he wasn't expecting a knife, but he managed to stop the guy quickly.
Chay is beside Kim in seconds, and Kim is leaning against him and asking Chay if he knows how to fix a stab wound before passing out against Chay.
Chay knows nothing about Kim and if there is someone he should call to come get Kim and therefore the only thing he can think is to take Kim to Chays home. Luckily Porsche was working at Yoks that night
Chay doesnt think Porsche would be too happy about a stranger on their couch and so Chay takes Kim to his room.
When Kim wakes up, Chay is sitting in a chair staring at his phone.
Kim calls out and Chay jumps up quickly rushing over to Kim and asking how Kim feels. Kim asks where he is and why Chay didnt take him to a hospital. Chay explains that he tried to call an ambulance but Kim kept refusing and telling Chay he wouldn't go, so Chay took him to his house instead.
Then Kim asks how Chay knew what to do for a knife wound since he's not actually a medic for the fights.
Chay asks how Kim found out and Kim just says he was fighting one night but Chay wasnt there and when he asked about someone to fix him up the guy laughed and said there was no one who did that, all the fighters took care of themselves. It wasn't hard to figure out.
Chay feels embarrassed about being caught and asks why Kim continued to let Chay help him when he knew Chay was lying.
Kim remains silent.
Its then that Porsche returns and Chay asks Kim to stay in his room at least until Porsche went to bed and Kim could sneak out without Porsche finding out Chay let practically a stranger into their home.
When Chay comes back to tell Kim the coast is clear, his bed is already empty and his window is open. Theres a note on his bed. All it is is Kims phone number.
Chay messages Kim instantly scolding him for aggravating his wound, and if he had waited 10 minutes he couldve just walked out the front door.
Kim sends back a time and a place. 'Wanna go on a date with me?'
Chay sends back a short 'yes' then screams into his pillow.
#!!!!!!#this sounds so cool#would absolutely read a fic about that tbh#kinnporsche#kimchay#porchay kittisawasd#kim theerapanyakul#porsche kittisawasd#kpts
