Ignis’ behavior with Aranea in the party

I noticed a few unusual things about Ignis’ behavior while Aranea is in the party.  I was able to reproduce the results pretty consistently so I think these elements were intentional.

1. Battle AI

 Ignis will frequently stand in front of Aranea at the start of the battle rather than in front of Noctis. 

At first I thought this was a bit of a fluke, but I was able to reproduce the result consistently.  I posted a short clip on Twitter that should give you a sense of where/when to look for the behavior. 

2. Combat 

Ignis is also more aggressive with enemies while Aranea is in the party (which could be a result of Gladio being MIA).  As a result of the more aggressive behavior (and shielding Aranea) Ignis is less likely to rescue Noctis (I needed a lot of rescuing taking all these shots) as you can see:

3. Expressions

Ignis does emote in response to some of what Aranea says/does.  When Ignis says “I’m loath to let a lady bloody her own hands” Aranea replies “it’s a little late for that”.  Ignis does appear to be a little downcast after that reply:

Occasionally Ignis will tell Aranea “you needn’t lift a finger’ at the start of a battle.  She replies: “I’m a do it yourself kinda gal”.  Ignis again seems a little melancholy:

I consistently reproduced that result, but I was doing this during the Steyliff mission (rather than a random Aranea hot join during a red giant fight).  I also noticed him react with the sad puppy look whenever Prompto would speak to Aranea, but I didn’t thoroughly test it enough to confirm.

Conclusions

At first I thought I was in tin foil hat territory with this, but the behaviors were consistent enough that I think someone in the dev team intentionally placed them there.  Why?  I’m not sure.  You could, of course, read some vague Highspecs into this, but you could just as easily interpret this as Ignis  displaying the chivalrous side we know he has.  It’s fun to speculate about what the intention might have been–I’d love to hear theories.  Anyway, just one more tiny, tiny tidbit as we try to collect every last detail about Ignis.
