Puna Ibis | Ibis de la Puna | Plegadis ridgwayi @ Mejía, Perú | June 2019 - Typically found in Peru’s high Andes, the Puna Ibis can also be seen year-round in Mejia (probably breeding locally), and it seems to me each year there are more individuals. This species is gregarious; the last flock I photographed had 50+ individuals. Sure spots to find them in Mejia include its agricultural fields, which are favorite feeding grounds and perfect for probing away in the mud. Although it resembles the White-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi), there have only been a few unconfirmed sightings of this species in Peru, so overlap is unlikely. - Follow us! | Síguenos! facebook.com/hillstarbirding instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry #igersperu (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/BznNeChA2xi/?igshid=1alldm14u5zn8

Groove-billed Ani | Garrapatero de Pico Estriado | Crotophaga sulcirostris @ Mejía, Perú | June 2019 - Just by watching their interactions, you can tell these nomadic birds are very sociable; they even nest communally, with as many as five pairs of birds using one single nest at the same time. They also feed in flocks, and several individuals may perch huddled up side by side. In Mejia, they are mostly found where dense thickets join open grassland or agricultural fields, foraging on the ground, hopping and running about. When in flight, these Anis are particularly beautiful; their large wings and long tails allow them to glide elegantly through low brush and over other obstacles. - Follow us! | Síguenos! facebook.com/hillstarbirding instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry #igersperu (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzEzYZ8AStv/?igshid=r0xfpqf7wiuu

Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant | Torito de Cresta Pintada | Anairetes reguloides @ Mejía, Perú | June 2019 - The Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant is a small and energetic bird present from central Peru to northern Chile (west Andes slope). It has distinctive black and white streaks on the breast and back, as well as a bifurcated crest reminiscent of horns, which gives it its spanish name: Torito (little bull). Ranging from coastal thickets up to Polylepis forest at 4000+ MASL, it furtively moves through dense vegetation, foraging on small insects, usually by perch-gleaning. Fortunately, still classified as Least Concern. - Follow us! | Síguenos! facebook.com/hillstarbirding instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry #igersperu (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/BysKG7ig9pF/?igshid=12vuimsvfu3z0

Peruvian Thick-knee | Huerequeque | Burhinus superciliaris @ Mejía, Perú | December 2018 - Structurally similar to plovers, the Huerequeque (I love the sound of that) has some superb concealment skills; even when standing in plain sight, these birds can be very difficult to spot if paired against the right backdrop. When spotted though, their fairly large size and hypnotic yellow eyes make them unmistakeable. Found throughout Peru’s coast, it is not unusual to see them in large groups; the grasslands surrounding Mejia's lagoon sanctuary are a sure bet to encounter them, and thankfully they are listed as Least Concern. - Photos: Paul Silva Sony RX10 Mk IV ƒ/4 | 1/250s | ISO-320 | 599mm @ 35mm equiv. - Follow us! | Síguenos! facebook.com/hillstarbirding instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry #igersperu (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvEezH8A0Qi/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1r3qy2hzuuex0

Chiguanco Thrush | Chiguanco | Turdus chiguanco @ Arequipa, Perú | December 2018 - This stern looking all-gray (except for its yellow beak and legs) bird is an expert lawn raider and a common sight near towns and agricultural fields. In fact, Chiguancos are one of the most common and widespread thrushes of the Andes, inhabiting both its slopes, generally ranging from 2400-4400 MASL. This species is very similar in appearance to the Great Thrush (Turdus fuscater), but smaller in size and lacking the eye-ring, so keep in mind when on the eastern slope of Peru's Andes, where their range overlaps. In Arequipa, Chiguancos will usually be the first to wake at dawn, signalling the sun’s imminent rise with their rich, rather pleasant song. - Photos: Paul Silva Sony RX10 Mk IV ƒ/4 | 1/640s | ISO-100 | 600mm @ 35mm equiv. - Follow us! | Síguenos! facebook.com/hillstarbirding instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry #igersperu (at Arequipa) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuycXo9A2Qm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1q295vm7rqqip

Peregrine Falcon | Halcón Peregrino | Falco peregrinus @ Mejía, Perú | January 2019 - Found on six continents, the Peregrine is one of the world's fastest flying birds. In Arequipa, I’ve seen them year round at Santuario Nacional Lagunas de Mejía; they might be breeding locally (?). Peregrines hunt mostly birds (sometimes as large as geese) with spectacular dives, or cinematic pursuits. In cities they are master pigeon hunters. These birds were seriously endangered in the mid-20th century because widespread DDT use; luckily, in 1999 they were removed from the Endangered Species List, thanks to efforts of many organizations, especially The Peregrine Fund. Many-colored Rush Tyrant | Sietecolores | Tachuris rubrigastra @ Mejía, Perú | January 2019 - Widespread on Perú’s coast, and also present on altiplano lakes, up to 4,300 MASL, the Many-colored Rush Tyrant’s name is truly accurate. With blues, greens, yellows, reds, blacks and whites, this small gem of a tyrannid is probably the most colorful in its family, and thus a very sought after species for birders. Never far from cover, they forage acrobatically within or at the edge of reedbeds, which they rarely ever leave; this fondness of thick, reedy marshes is partly why they are sometimes very difficult to see. - Follow us! | Síguenos! facebook.com/hillstarbirding instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry #igersperu (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtgdxWzAi33/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=73fftn9wh07

Burrowing Owl | Lechuza Terrestre | Athene cunicularia @ Mejía, Perú | January 2019 - With striking yellow eyes and unusually long legs, burrowing owls have a very large range that extends throughout the Americas. In Perú, they are fairly common along the coast and lower western slope of the Andes. Often seen standing on open ground, generally near their burrows, this conspicuous owl is unique in many ways: 1. Although mostly crepuscular, they can be active at any time of day. 2. They are highly terrestrial, routinely nesting in underground burrows (which they are capable of excavating), and may even pursue prey on foot. 3. They are often seen in small groups. 2. Peruvian Pelican | Pelícano Peruano | Pelecanus thagus @ Mejía, Perú | January 2019 - Two species of Pelican can be easily observed from Perú’s shores: Peruvian and Brown. The latter is almost half the size of Pelecanus thagus, and its range is limited to northern Perú during non-El Niño years, whereas Peruvian Pelican inhabits Perú’s entire coast and even disperses into southern Ecuador. These huge, strictly marine birds, feed mostly on smaller fish, such as anchovies, and can congregate in very large numbers when supplies are abundant. Though still a common species, El Niño fluctuations over the past 20 years have negatively affected its food sources, hence they are considered Near Threatened. - Follow us! | Síguenos! facebook.com/hillstarbirding instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry #igersperu (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/BssqnnBBrNg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=3okbr9xaiz9s

Snowy Egret | Garcita Blanca | Egretta thula @ Mejía, Perú | January 2019 - Present throughout Perú in all types of aquatic habitats, although most common along the coast, the Snowy Egret is well known for its frantic foraging displays; it runs, jumps, flicks, hovers, stirs and probes in its search for fish and other small aquatic animals. Also, they have distinctive yellow feet in otherwise dark legs -which helps set them apart from other similar species-, and are very vocal, with their characteristic “raah”. During breeding season, although only for a few days, their lores and feet become richer in color, turning reddish-orange. Birding Birding | Santuario Nacional Lagunas de Mejía, Arequipa - Perú - With an extension of 690 Ha., Perú’s Santuario Nacional Lagunas de Mejía (Mejía Lagoons National Sanctuary or SNLM) hosts more than 200 species of birds, including residents (80+), migrants (80+), and vagrants (40+), and offers a unique show of biodiversity found nowhere else in southern Perú. Because of this, it is a privileged destination for bird enthusiasts, and in 1984 the sanctuary was officially incorporated as a protected area in order to ensure its conservation. SNLM is composed of three larger lagoons which shelter the bulk of bird species; from north to south they are “Mejía”, “Iberia”, and “Boquerón”. It also has vast reedbeds which surround the southern lagoons and serve as nesting sites for many other species. A vast sandy beach runs parallel to the entire length of the sanctuary; here, large numbers of shore and marine birds can be seen, especially in summer. At the southern tip of the sanctuary, the Tambo River drains its waters into the Pacific, creating a stir of nutrients which also attracts all kinds of birds. Finally, the Tambo River banks form vast riparian zones, home to an additional number of birds which are not found anywhere else in the sanctuary. - Cool facts: SNLM is home to almost 60% of Arequipa’s known birds More than 80 species can be found year round in SNLM SNLM is a critical and strategic site for 80+ migratory birds In a single day in SNLM and Mejía, it is possible to observe between 40 and 50 species of birds without breaking much of a sweat SNLM is the only place in Perú where the Red-fronted Coot (Fulica rufifrons) can still be seen SNLM is recognized as a conservation area of international importance by Ramsar and BirdLife International - Photos: @Paul Silva Sony RX10 Mk IV, Canon PowerShot SX50 HS - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry #igersperu (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsdCAXmBdNr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2r2179hlvopd

Croaking Ground-Dove | Tortolita Peruana | Columbina cruziana @ Arequipa, Perú | December 2018 - With a very peculiar and undovelike song (dry, creaking notes), the Croaking Ground-Dove, sometimes called Peruvian Ground-Dove, is one of the more conspicuous and common doves in Perú (Least Concern, thankfully). They can be observed in a wide variety of habitats, including gardens, parks, fields, and scrub, primarily along the coast, but up to 2,800 MASL as well. At times gregarious, they are often seen in small groups foraging on the ground. Their distinctive chestnut scapular bar sets them apart from other ground-doves. Great Egret | Garza Blanca | Ardea alba @ Mejía, Perú | December 2018 - This large and completely white egret has a bare facial skin patch that turns green in the breeding season. Breeding adults also grow long plumes on their backs, which they use in courtship displays. In Perú, the Ardea alba is found throughout the coast and Amazonia, and locally in the Andes, in a variety of wetland habitats (beaches, marshes, river margins, lakes, etc.). They eat mainly fish but, if it’s the right size, they will also take a stab at almost anything within reach, such as amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, crayfish, and insects. - Follow us! | Síguenos! facebook.com/hillstarbirding instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/Br8JqNrhlKw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ksehjpen45y7

Least Sandpiper | Playerito Menor | Calidris minutilla @ Mejía, Perú | December 2018 - This common boreal migrant to the coast of Peru can reliably be seen from September through April, foraging for tiny crustaceans, insects, snails, and also seeds, in coastal marshes and beaches (although there are rare reports along amazonian rivers and altiplano lakes). The Least Sandpiper is about the size of a sparrow, which makes it the smallest member of the sandpiper family. It is also the only sandpiper in the New World with yellowish legs. Thanks in part to its extensive range, which takes them south as far as central Chile, their numbers are considered stable. - Follow us! | Síguenos! facebook.com/hillstarbirding instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrqPG1DBNap/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=en7k3fcjbqk0

Black-fronted Nunbird | Monja de Frente Negra | Monasa nigrifrons @ Tarapoto, Perú | August 2014 - The Black-fronted Nunbird is widespread in Perú’s lower Amazonia (below 750 MASL), and is often seen in groups that perch conspicuously and can erupt into noisy choruses. It forages mostly for arthropods, small lizards and amphibians in riverbank and lake-margin forests. Like most puffbirds, the Black-fronted Nunbird nests in burrows dug in banks or in the ground. Fortunately, this species has an extremely large range, and hence is evaluated as Least Concern, despite the fact that its population trend appears to be decreasing. - Canon PowerShot SX50 HS ƒ/6.5 | 1/160s | 215mm | ISO-160 - Follow us! | Síguenos! www.facebook.com/hillstarbirding www.instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry (at Tarapoto) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrXgwQwAwZe/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tkx4ke11ptlh

Many-colored Rush Tyrant | Sietecolores | Tachuris rubrigastra @ Mejía, Perú | December 2018 - Widespread on Perú’s coast, and also present on altiplano lakes, up to 4,300 MASL, the Many-colored Rush Tyrant’s name is truly accurate. - Sony RX10 Mk IV ƒ/4 | 1/800s | 220mm | ISO-100 - Follow us! | Síguenos! www.facebook.com/hillstarbirding www.instagram.com/hillstar_birding - References | Fuentes: Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Audubon Society BirdLife International Princeton Birds and Natural History Handbook of the Birds of the World Alive Corbidi - Centro de Ornitología y Biodiversidad Arkive - #birds #birding #birdwatching #nature #wildlife #animals #birdphotography #naturephotography #birdlovers #birdphotobooth #birdsofperu #peru #wildlifephotography #conservation #animalphotography #naturelover #wild #visitperu #liveauthentic #exploretocreate #adventureculture #wonderoutdoors #YTúQuéPlanes #PeruTheRichestCountry (at Mejía, Arequipa, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrU4JKxg-3i/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7dwlajjse994
