Let’s talk Janelle Monáe Met Gala 2025

The Met Gala theme this year is was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style and the focus was black dandyism.

A dandy refers to a person from the 18th and 19th century who is very devoted to style, neatness and fashion.

In other words, the theme was finely tailored outfits that are fashion forward and have an element of black culture somewhere in the design.

Janelle Monae’s look is a time traveling dandy who represents her past and what may come in the future. And this is according to an interview with the New York Times. (Link at the end)

Now after reading said article, I definitely see the vision. But when I first laid eyes on her piece, I thought of something completely different and I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else bring it up so I’m going to.

Janelle Monae’s look is a political statement about the relationship between the police and black people (specifically the USA)

Now before I give a reason for why I believe this, I want to explain something regarding the limits of arts.

If your piece of art is trying to make a statement. You may have to take visual shortcuts that are recognized by the general public in order to get your point across even if it may not accurately reflect reality.

For example the 🩷 symbol refers to love and adoration even though an actual heart looks like nothing like it.

Now with that out of the way, take a look at this:

On the left is a shooting range target. It is a piece of paper that as you may have guessed from the name is for target practice. You may have seen these before In shows that mainly focus on criminal behavior or police dramas.

Now look at Janelle’s 1st look. Thin lines wrapped around the body with the emphasis being on the center and the squareness of the garment replicating the squareness of the piece of paper the target image is printed on.

The message here is this: I am nothing more that a piece of paper for you to unload bullets into me. I am not a person.

Now look at this:

The 2nd look is more tailored to her body (fitting the theme of course) which gives her a more human like shape. She’s no longer a piece of paper.

Additionally the solid part of the suit in the 1st look is no longer black it is now red. Almost as if she has been shot, laying on her side her clothing is soaking up the blood.

Message here: I’m not a piece of paper for target practice. I’m a human being with rights like anyone else, but because of the color of my skin, I have been shot and it’s too late to undo the damage.

Now granted this doesn’t explain the monocle (I thought it was cracked based on the images I saw, as if she had hit the ground) nor does it explain why the bag didn’t change color from black to red despite being on the same side as the suit that went from black to red.

But keep in mind, my interpretation is not the official one and they may have done that to balance out the look. Much like how in the 1st look there was a section of the suit that was a solid color to most likely not clutter the design and/or represent the past (left with has pinstripe lines which was popular at same point in men’s fashion history ) and future/present (right has plain solid design much like what is trending now)

There's hints that this is attached to the ARG that was launched right before AI:NI came out (the animal symbols being a big one, I'd say). Granted, that didn't take place on the moon, but whatever

This is also likely a new aiball. The red eyes and facial markings? The primarily black and white outfit? The yellow bits could be the "nerve" that Tama and Aiba also have in their hair.....so what if we finally see Marco

Aitsf 3 thoughts (AND SPOILERS FOR aistf 1 and 2)

So according to the official website, AISTF 3: takes place after the cyclops killings are resolved…

And Amane shows up in the trailer, it’s safe to assume that AITSF 3 is between 1 and 2

So I have a couple of questions

First, which timeline are we following here? I know the obvious answer is post true ending, but resolved is such a vague term. After all, in the og game the case is technically resolved when you off so Sejima (but this after Iris dies). So who’s to say that this isn’t an alt timeline not presented in the og game where Iris survives?

And if I wanted to get really angsty the website says killings as in plural…what if this alt timeline is one where shoko, Renju and Mizuki do not make it (after all “Renju” was waiting for Mizuki to come out of hiding of the merry go round most likely to off her, what if he succeeded in this timeline) hence why Mizuki is not in the trailer (considering Iris is her friend too, and Mizuki seems to be beloved in the fanbase, it’s odd she’s not shown)

Secondly,

I already established that this takes place between 1 and 2. But the problem with that is continuity. Considering Iris is out in space and stuck playing a life or death game, there is no way in hell she would not bring that up at a later point.

But at the same time, if I remember correctly Iris barely appears in Aitsf 3. She does show up, but she’s not the main focus during the game. So maybe the opportunity never comes up. But that’s the boring answer. I want to have FUN with my tinfoil hat ideas dammit.

So here’s come options that spike chunsoft could do to tie the games together (assuming that they want to) first option is the easiest and the most likely one

1. During a wink psync on Iris (and I think it’s done by Mizuki in aitsf 2) she’s singing a song about cucumbers and most players would say oh it’s just Iris being silly, but could you imagine how funny it would be for her to have heard that song from someone during this adventure and years down the line it just gets stuck in her head. Hence an easy tie in.

2. Add dialog to aitsf 2 if the game detects you have played though aitsf 3 (and have tokiko mention something about the game being both the past (in the timeline present in the games) and future (the order in which we receive the games) it would really tie in the meta aspect. Granted I don’t know how easy this would be to do, but I know for a fact that in the famicom detective club series for the switch that if you have played at least one of the games, any fdc you play after that will ask if you want to use the same name you used in the first game.

3. The coffin that says psync me acts similar to Solaris (the flame of hope in Sonic 06 that if it Is blown out, it makes the entire game seem as if it never happened) and the game is never canon hence why it is never brought up. That the second kaname psyncs with it the game ends. And it resets everything.

But what if it becomes a gameplay mechanic?

I’m fairly certain we do psync with the coffin at the same point (in the trailer we see date starting a sommnium and there is not another person in the other chair. What if the coffin has a data chip or something smaller that can be psycned with hence why there is nothing in the chair) (its also just a likely that the scene shown that there is supposed to be a person there but they were removed to avoid spoilers…)

Like at the end of the route (assuming this game has multiple routes) something goes horribly wrong and up to that point you haven’t synced with the coffin for whatever reason. And date does it for the first time thinking it could be a Hail Mary this could fix everything (remember this is the same date who believe in one route of the first game that doing a sommnium with Iris Would allow him to jump into parallel worlds and keep Iris alive).

But instead he wakes up the day that everything went to shit and only he remembers it. (Again in the first game he seems to have some knowledge of alternate timelines but he never really uses it to its advantage and it’s presented more of as a nod to the player) and it starts a loop that makes him more and more unhinged and he starts losing sleep. Hence why the game is called;

No sleep for kaname date.

Also it’s really funny that we now have a full game based on the arg that lead up the second game. If you know you know.

Will we get an arg leading up the release of the game? I hope so…

Sonic movie 4 musing

Considering that movie 4 is introducing metal sonic to the scu (sonic cinematic universe) and that the movies seem fond of using “older” music for montages, they need use “Automatic” by the Go-Gos (specifically if they show the creation of metal sonic) because it would fit pretty well.

Alternatively they could also just be funny and use

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk as well.

Or even better yet get Hideki Naganuma to somehow remix the two songs.

Playing dress to impress until I get the full set

Day 5

Round 1: person in a shark onesie

Theme1: trendy: i did Sabrina carpenter

And had to pose sync for my life. Made it into top 3

ROUND 2: a duck in the shape of an egg

Theme1: Roblox game:

Dressed as Lana (even though there was a better Lana)

Theme2: JPop speed round (I did not take a pic this time.) but so many people quit that it went directly to a final 3 moment.

I was In 1st place. 2nd place quit, and so did the jury….

SO I FINALLY COMPLETED THE SET!!!!!

I will post my thoughts on the new mode sometime tomorrow.

Playing style showdown until I win the full set day 4:

ROUND 1: A literal Patrick star player

Theme 1: freak show. I did my signature bandaids/eye combo (I call it the Curly look since it reminds me of Curly from Mouthwashing)

Somehow got bottom 3, but I think it’s because I was slightly off theme…but I survived and then the sever crashed (because someone was a sore loser)

ROUND 1a: so many blank avatars

Theme 1: school trip

Slays all around, I think I might get knocked out

And somehow made it to top 4

Theme 2/3 going to sleep-JPOP

Again I think I’m ok, nothing crazy here and I get in bottom 3.

And then comes the JPOP speed round and we have a vote reveal. One player only voted for one person when they were supposed to vote for 2. If I get knocked out, she ain’t getting my vote during final 3.

Theme 4: Widow

Pose sync time and I CHOKE

but the person I ended up voting for during the final 3 finally finished their set, so that’s one less person to compete with ….

ROUND 2: an egg with stick arms and legs.

Theme 1: Fictional characters:

I did Sonic, but I also saw a Deku, Daphne, and rainbow dash (I got top 4)

Theme 2: astounding artist with a random item and it’s the STUPID HAWAI SHIRT. So I do Taylor swift. Thank god I found an immunity idol

Somehow I survive this despite being bottom 3.

theme 3: coral reef

Had to pose sync for my life since no one voted for me(understandably so lots of slays in the room) and I locked tf in and survived. Game ends with me getting 3rd.

ROUND 3: a gerbil and a goose surrounded by floating rubber ducks.

Theme 1/2: pop art and decorative chaos

Thought I would not survive pop art but got kicked in the next round

I forgot to mention this yesterday, but I have 2 rules when it comes to this game:

1. If I get eliminated, I stick around and whoever gets me to laugh during the “plead their case” section gets my vote.

2. Also I only join a game when I see someone with a really funny looking Roblox avatar

Theme 1: country side.

Ngl when I saw everyone else on the catwalk I knew I was taking an L and I was right. So I got stuck to spectating

Theme 2: celebrity

I’m very curious to know how Lana picks who to kick during bottom 3, bc despite another players outfit being very good for the theme, they got bottom 3 and eliminated. Even though there were objectively worse outfits.

Nothing more interesting to say, so I’ll move us to…

ROUND 2: joined because of a piss skeleton

Part 1: retro style

I made it past this round with a 70s inspired fit

There was another player who had an incomplete look and was begging to stay in. And another was begging on their behalf. Somehow they both survived the round.

Anyway I got 2nd place and bc of the jury quitting I did not win. But winner was absolutely deserved.

ROUND 3: no funny avatars just someone begging me to join

This entire game was me thinking: I’m so dead I’m so dead when I saw everyone else’s looks and yet I survived to top 4.

And then proceeded to choke during pose sync despite me having multiple wins before.

Anyway the themes were pastel goth and influencer

Whenever I win the full set, I’m going to also do a separate post on what I did and didn’t like about the new mode.
