I love Twitch. I click on a female streamer and within 30 seconds a man is in her chat telling her to go back in the kitchen. One minute later another man is asking for pictures of her feet. I click on another female streamer and she's explaining why she can't put the webcam on: she's had fake lashes put on her and her eyes are red, swollen, crying and burning. She's in so much pain. But it's okay she always gets allergic reactions when she gets fake eye lashes. I click on a male streamer and his girlfriend is hand feeding him dinner so he can keep his hands on the keyboard and play his little game. In response he keeps repeating "you're so pretty oh my god you're so pretty you look incredibly pretty today". His chat is full of men calling the woman "our girlfriend". Twitch keeps recommending me that female streamer who does porn. The female streamer with the highest viewercount among women. A male streamer is anxious to play an online game with vocal chat. He tells his 10k viewers that he's scared another player will say something offensive and he'll get banned from Twitch. In the end he decides to try it, he plays with another guy and it goes well, then he plays with a woman and his chat becomes so misogynistic his moderators have to disable it for a while. I stream myself and try a virtual avatar for the first time, I try to make her look like me. A regular viewer immediately asks me if my breasts are as big in real life. I put my avatar in a wide shirt for a week after that, before ditching the avatar altogether. I receive a private message from a man with a fetish telling me to punish him for saying women can't play video games. He's spamming all women. He made a special account for it. Male streamers' chat are filled with rape jokes inspired by porn. A man who calls his girlfriend a bitch says he won't be playing the Harry Potter game because it's disrespectful to trans people. Many female streamers appear all dolled up under a pink light with a pink catgirl headset the camera titled towards their breasts. Or they use a hentai virtual avatar. All male streamers look like they haven't washed in a month.

on the topic of not using AI for research, also be aware of using automatic Google results because they rely on AI too and don't ACTUALLY know what they're talking about
case in point: oh let's Google what flowers are safe for cats!
Tumblr media
Google: lilies! source? trust me bro
Lilies?
You mean perhaps the most poisonous plant for cats there is? that can cause sudden Organ Shut Down and Death? Thanks Google! Good thing I can rely on your handy suggestions so I don't have to click on any actual websites and read to make sure your information is correct! (Also tulips and daffodils will also definitely Smite your cat but I'm not sure about the other flowers)
remember just because Google or an AI is telling you something confidently doesn't mean it actually knows what it's talking about
I trust no seasoned writer or researcher does this but this is more a message to newer or younger writers or anyone with less experience with Google and how it works

i absolutely hate that trope where a man is overprotective of a woman, she defies him because "he worries too much," and then promptly gets into some dangerous situation that she needs to be saved from, the narrative thereby proving him right and justifying his controlling and overbearing behavior

I don’t think we talk enough about how causal the relationship might be between suicidality and a trans identity, and not the other way around.
It seems to me that some suicidal people are attracted to transition as a method of symbolic suicide. The whole modern method is an exercise in throwing yourself away. Your old name is dead. You get to demand people eliminate or alter all photographic or documented evidence of your former life, from your parents to the government. You’re promised a different face, a different body. A new ID. New spaces. Your parents are abusing and rejecting you if they still think about the old you. Most importantly, your hatred of yourself is validated. You were right to hate yourself— of course you did when you were born wrong! Your self-hatred is now some strange new axis of activism, where what you hated was imposed upon you by people you now get to fight. The old self is hated and eliminated to be replaced by a shallow cutout of stereotyped whimsy. By believing that men and women are so deeply and fundamentally different, you are promised transition into something other than human. Hormone injections shall transform you into a different creature that doesn't even think the way you thought. Women are whimsical creatures that do nothing but shop and preen and it’s an asset to be brainless. Men are formless blobs where it’s normal not to care about anything or anyone, just sit around growing a beer gut all day, and that’s totally not a mutation created by patriarchy, it’s just normal and fulfilling when you’re a man. Nothing like the old you that had expectations, responsibilities, needs, and desires.
The very nature of today's terminally online trans identity scoops up the already suicidal. And it all becomes a great surprise that morale goes through the floor once the procedures are done and the dream of inhumanity vanishes.

It’s so so funny that the same people that think J K Rowling should be literally arrested if not murdered for hurting trans people’s feelings also think there should be no consequences for them threatening her with violence. The disconnection from reality is insane, like that’s not how laws work in real life. If something is illegal for one person, it’s illegal for everyone. If refusing to accept a trans person’s view of gender was illegal, it would also be illegal for them to reject a radical feminists view of gender (it’s invalidating like you want to erase the existence of feminists!).

there are women who went through female genital mutilation and force their daughters through the same violent process. there are women who were forced to wear hijab who force their daughters to wear hijab too. there are women who defend their husbands and sons after they assaulted or abused her and other women. there are women who cant stand to see their natural face and still defend makeup and fillers. there are women who only have kids because they couldn’t get an abortion yet support the criminalisation of it. etc etc
just because there are women defending it doesnt make it any less misogynistic and harmful!
and just because there are prostitutes, strippers and women in porn defending the sex industry, doesnt change that its an institution systematically subjecting women to violence and abuse at the hands of men!

Sometimes i think about how young girls are told things like “oh now that you’re old enough, your body wants to get pregnant.” Or “your body’s number one desire is reproduction”
Sometimes i think about how women are diagnosed with dissociative disorders at extremely higher rates than men.

Actually horrifying. How can you not want men to literally just drop dead en masse. Also plenty of comments from other women shaming her for not wanting to have sex every single day, and men telling women if they don't have sex with their man every day that he will find a woman that will.
(audio: "You're gonna take that dick, you're gonna take that dick")

Patriarchy really slaps you in the face when a five year old boy refuses to listen to any woman at school and will only follow a man’s directions. 🙄

"Some 16 per cent of Kenyan women and girls are subjected to FGM [Female Genital Mutilation]; worldwide, it’s estimated that 200 million women alive today have been cut. The effects on mental health are considerable, from anxiety to PTSD, and yet the discourse around ending the practice has always focused on the physical rather than mental impacts of FGM.
Last year, however, a Kenyan NGO launched a programme with a radically different approach – intergenerational healing and trauma-informed support for the women who have survived FGM. This small project has lofty aims – to finally break the cycle and bring an end to a practice they believe should be called, plain and simply, “sexual assault”.
Based in Nairobi, The Girl Generation (TGG) is an ambitious five-year, UK government-funded project exploring ways to bring an end to FGM. Addressing emotional trauma was the starting point of their new programme, the Survivor Leadership Training (SLT), which first piloted last March for 20 Kenyan women.
Designed by the Somali-born, British FGM survivor and psychotherapist Leyla Hussein – the project’s global advocacy director – she wanted it to be “girl-centred”. Until now, says Hussein, FGM activism was “colonised by men – always a conversation with community or religious leaders. No one was listening to the survivors.”
Key to TGG’s approach is to push for recognition of FGM as sexual violence and a human-rights violation, rather than a cultural tradition. “Language is key,” says Hussein. “Putting a sharp object to a child’s genitalia is an act of sexual assault.” To this end, the course provides psychosexual health education, including reproductive health and rights, reframing the practice in the minds of survivors...
[Zeitun] Abas took part in the programme three months ago, where mothers and daughters are encouraged to share their stories in a safe space. Here, finally, the possibility of healing the mother-daughter relationship – so often damaged by FGM – is enabled. For many, it’s the first time such matters are discussed – daughters gain some understanding of why their mothers inflicted the practice upon them, while mothers get to share their own pain...
Despite her initial shyness, Abas gradually found her voice: “Through the programme, I realised many survivors underwent more painful experiences than me. I realised there was a need to accept what had happened and move on. Being able to confidently engage in conversations around FGM, I no longer feel as bitter.”
Having found the confidence to set up her own small business selling soap and detergent in Isiolo Town, earning enough to support her family, she says that she will never subject her daughters to the same experience she went through at the hands of her loved ones.
The programme also nurtures survivors’ leadership skills, so that they can start their own support groups and help other women. Several survivor-leaders have started mother-daughter forums; others use art and photography as vehicles to discuss FGM. Meanwhile, two trainees have become leaders in county government: “Many [politicians] are afraid to speak out because they’re afraid of losing votes,” says Njuguna, “but after the training [these women] were more confident talking about FGM.”
...Survivor-leaders “cascade” their training to their communities. TGG offers grants so leaders can, for example, hire a psychotherapist to provide support for survivors, or pay for an event space or materials...
Although the data remains incomplete, TGG estimates that the first cohort has reached about 300 additional women and girls. They are already witnessing a rupture of the FGM cycle: “Women are saying, ‘we will never subject our daughters to this pain. It has to end with us.’” says Njuguna. “We are also seeing many more people discussing FGM – it’s becoming less taboo.” ...
With only one trained cohort so far, it’s early days for SLT [Survivor Leadership Training]. “We’re now looking at cascading the curriculum this July to a regional level in Kenya, and also to Somaliland, Ethiopia and Senegal,” says Njuguna. TGG says that it will continue documenting what works and what doesn’t in order to develop guidance notes – the longer-term plan is that there will be an online curriculum, as well as an Africa-wide network of survivor-leaders raising awareness. The ultimate aim, says Omar, is that “anybody will be able to access the tools, and we can finally end the cycle of FGM”."
