Parallels between Haymitch & Katniss

i haven’t been able to stop thinking about them since i finished reading sunrise on the reaping🥺😭

they both have a younger sibling.

they both lost their father in the mines.

they were both reaped for the first time in the 3rd quarter quell. they were in their first games due to them trying to protect someone they love.

haymitch defended his two covey girls against peacekeepers: lenore dove at the 50th reaping and katniss when gale was being whipped.

mags, wiress and beetee—haymitch’s mentors during the 2nd quarter quell—ended up being the allies katniss wanted during the 3rd quarter quell.

both tried to kill themselves in the games so that there will be no victor.

both defied the capitol and sabotaged their own games.

while haymitch’s main focus was to try to break the arena and to help one of the newcomers win, katniss was trying to keep peeta alive. katniss ended up breaking the arena but failed in keeping peeta safe. haymitch failed in both of his objectives.

both had someone they love being hijacked

children always gravitated towards them during the games, and they failed to keep then alive.

both of the person they love were threatened with poison; the difference is that katniss could save peeta in time but haymitch couldn’t save lenore dove.

they had to be under surveillance while they were dealing with their trauma, stopping them from taking their own lives.

“she’s not an easy person; she’s like me, peeta always says. but she was smarter than me, or luckier. she’s the one who finally kept that sun from rising.”

The beef between Haymitch and Snow is so funny. The way Haymitch drank an entire pitcher of milk just so Snow wouldn't get any, so Snow kept supplying him milk throughout his entire stay in the Capitol after his victory... bro what are you doing you're the president of Panem😭

I wish Maysilee Donner would've met President Snow. He wouldve said some corny shit like "Snow lands on top" and she would've eaten the words and chewed them right back up so nasty that he would've been so ashamed to say them ever again.

the difference between Haymitch and Katniss's narration is so funny. Haymitch would give us everyone's social security number if he knew them, while Katniss wouldn't even tell us her mom's name.

Suzanne Collins just said fuck you to everyone who’s ever critiqued the Hunger Games as being a “teen girl saves the day” story. She said oh, Mockingjay didn’t make it clear enough? Here’s a book about how people have been rebelling for decades only to have their efforts suppressed and propagandized. Rebellion takes time and it takes failure and Katniss may have been the spark that ignited the wildfire but she did so standing atop the doused flames of everyone who came before her.

the thing is that childhood doesn't just end when you turn 18 or when you turn 21. it's going to end dozens of times over. your childhood pet will die. actors you loved in movies you watched as a kid will die. your grandparents will die, and then your parents will die. it's going to end dozens and dozens of times and all you can do is let it. all you can do is stand in the middle of the grocery store and stare at freezers full of microwave pizza because you've suddenly been seized by the memory of what it felt like to have a pizza party on the last day of school before summer break. which is another ending in and of itself

Crashing out on Tumblr.com again because I keep seeing this garbage take everywhere I turn. Normally, I don’t care what other people’s opinions are—but this one is actually harmful far beyond just being an opinion on a fictional character. So.

I, for one, am immensely happy Levi made it out alive, regardless of his physical state. His character has so much more depth than just his physical abilities—his strength isn’t what makes him a “man,” and it’s not even on the list of why he’s my favorite character.

I’d like to think that rather than feeling depressed and lonely, like some people assume he must be, he feels fulfilled. At peace. Free of a life of fighting.

He can rest knowing his friends’ and comrades’ sacrifices weren’t in vain. He kept his word to carry out his duty until the end and made choices he’d regret the least, like he promised. He discovered the truth for Erwin, kept going for Hange, and looked out for the squad he’d known since they were kids.

He gave everything he had left, no matter how bleak things got, no matter what it would do to him physically, no matter the sacrifices it would cost—that’s the kind of selfless, loyal, caring person he is. And still, on the other side of it, he’s looking out for others and helping. Those are the traits that measure someone’s strength and character.

Him dying wouldn’t have been more honorable than that. You could never, ever convince me otherwise.

If you can’t see beyond shallow, outdated views of masculinity and strength, I feel sorry for you. If you think living disabled means living a sad life, I think your life is much sadder. Look in a mirror, ask yourself why.
