luca paused. something about joanne’s easy way of throwing a little insult always threw him off. sure, he’d made the same joke, but he was allowed to. joanne wasn’t actually a member of the family, no matter how much she liked to think her friendship with nathalie made her an honorary d’ansembourg. he ignores the jab, instead focusing on the next part, “ah, i have no idea. i’ve barely seen her - jet lag and all. i’m sure she’ll write something, though.”

there was no way to describe the relief that washed over him when he saw the windows of the resort in front of him. he had lost the track of time walking through the forest. he had reached a road much earlier than he had found the resort — he must have ran too far in the west when he had made his escape. the moment he saw the crowd in the reception hall, he realized not too many people had made it back. “ excuse me, ” he stopped the first person he saw. “ is barbie somewhere ? where is she ? are toni and nat here ? where– who are not here ? ”  

After giving out sandwiches, Joanne was taking a “well deserved” break but her relative tranquillity was disturbed by Vaughn. She sighed but still answered his question. ❝ Can you use full names ? Please. ❞ It was not like she was familiar with everyone and on a nickname basis with them. ❝ And perhaps even a physical description. ❞

“ shouldn’t more people be back by now ? what are the rescuers doing taking this long ? ” nicole felt like yelling at someone. she wanted someone to blame. someone to torment. each person who emerged from the forest and who wasn’t natalia, made her blood boil. 

Joanne was not thrilled to be handing out sandwiches like a waitress but yet there she was. She had agreed to join the efforts to keep the resort organised. It would be good to be perceived as helpful during a crisis. Perhaps she could even spin that story later. It would certainly boost her popularity back home and maybe  abroad too. ❝ Because the rescuers are not professionals. I wouldn’t trust any of them to save me or help me. ❞ She pulled a sandwich from her basket and presented it to Nicole. ❝ But the kitchen team is much more efficient, so if you’re hungry take this. ❞

“There is almost always scheming in the Korean court, but most of the important players are  ‘swarming’  here, as you put it, so I believe most of the scheming will occur here as well.”  Areum was not overly worried about any drastic changes at home ﹔ the most likely person to make a move in their absence was her father, and he would  —  probably  —  give her at least a warning before doing so.  “I hope Chilean politics are not giving you undue trouble.”

❝ So the scheming will happen here and back home. ❞ That was interesting. Joanne loved good drama. ❝ I’ve read about the prime minister’s scandal. Such an amateur. ❞ Joanne had had a couple of affairs and had never been caught. Kwon Yijeong could and should have been more careful. It was not that difficult to hide a mistress. People had done it for centuries.  ❝ Chile is kind of boring actually. Everything is under control. ❞ It was the reason why she had decided to come to Argentina. She needed to be surrounded by people who would challenge her.

when you get angry, how do you show it?

❝ My words shoot to kill. I spill venom at people and also I make sure to ruin their lives any way that I can. I’m not just angry, I’m vengeful and petty. ❞
