In this world and in this lifetime, all we are trying to do is gift ourselves joy and happiness.

When I was a child
You were the sun. Warm and constant.
I didn’t think I could ever live without your light.
But as I grew older
Everything slowly became cold,
And dark
Even you.
Suddenly the world that was once full of bright light, innocence and potential
Became a bad, bad place.
My world became dark. I lived in the night.
How soothing it was for me at first.
To come to the realization that the light of the sun, when you put it into perspective, isn’t all encompassing after all.
We humans live in darkness.
But at the same time, I came to resent those who had fooled me into thinking that there was no way for people to live within the dark.
I resented you. Because you knew the universe was a void. And you tried to convince me it was all stars.

Surrounding yourself with things that are larger than life all but ensures that you will feel a sense of smallness. But this type of small doesn’t feel debilitating; standing next to a giant tree, gazing out at a vast ocean, or up into the endless night sky reminds us that we aren’t the center of the universe. There are beings, forces, and objects that surround us and are much more powerful and important to the circle of life than we will ever be. That’s why I’ve always liked to surround myself with big things. When walking beneath skyscrapers or summiting a mountain peak I feel small and insignificant in a way that justifies that sensation.

I bought myself fragrant flowers and made coffee with cinnamon this morning; an attempt to decipher whether there’s any truth to phrases like “the little things are what make life worth living” or “just take it day by day”.
