2nd gen vs 3rd gen kpop

Pretty much just in response for all the fan “disputes” about comparing 2nd gen and 3rd gen idols. I’m sure this has been covered many times, so just giving my personal take on this stupid “debate”.

In my opinion, some comparisons between idols then and now are fun, seeing how they are similar and how they differ. But honestly, some of the “comparisons” I’ve seen on forums and YouTube comments about their “success” (I guess “recognition” is probably a better word) are seriously ridiculous. 

First of all, just getting it out of the way, YouTube views. Honestly the whole YouTube view thing is just annoying as a whole. In this case, comparing the number of views a music video gets. YouTube has boomed just over the past 2-3 years, along with technology. 10 years ago, getting (or spamming) YouTube views weren’t such a big thing. People just used YouTube to watch the mv, and that was it, no excessive spamming existed in such a fashion. 

And then we have the “who is more famous” comments... I guess this is also connected to the YouTube thing. When people start comparing how much “international recognition” 3rd gen groups are getting to those that 2nd gen groups have gotten, it really doesn’t make much sense to use that to measure their “success”. Are 3rd gen idols (such as BTS, Twice, Blackpink) getting greater international recognition? Yes they are, and to massive extent, no doubt, and it’s amazing to see and be a part of. But it’s the hard work of many 2nd gen idols (such as Super Junior, Big Bang, SNSD) that broke into the international market that allowed so many 3rd gen idols to gain such global reputations. It’s just like how the 2nd gen idols were able to get a lot more general recognition from the public, because of 1st gen idols (like H.O.T & Sechs Kies). 

Sorry for the rant. I know this does not apply to most kpop fans, but sometimes when you’re just scrolling through the forums, things just really get messy, and I just really wanted to talk about it...

Myungsoo: Slays all the girls (and guys), quiet but popular, is actually a weirdo once you get to know him.

Sungjong: Knows everything about everyone, will kick your ass in a debate, all the girls are jealous of him.

Sunggyu: Spends all day lying under the sun, waiting for belly rubs, easily annoyed by dogs. 

Dongwoo: Hyper, gets along with dogs well, literally a dog.

Woohyun: Very clingly, follows you around the house, sm0l.

Hoya: Appears every once in a while, doesn’t fuck around, doesn’t exactly trust you. 

Sungyeol: Catches birds and mice, finds you funny, good at getting food from neighbours. 

Myungsoo: Literally the most lazy cat, naps 20 hours a day, spends the rest either eating or staring at something.

Sungjong: The cat that watches you as you fall on your face and silently judges the fuck out of you.

Rest in Peace, Kim Jonghyun, main vocalist of SHINee, a friend, a colleague, a son, a brother, and an inspiration and idol for thousands of fans and artists. You will be missed. We will always remember your fun, witty personality, angelic voice, and beautiful music. May our condolences go to family and friends, helping them through this time of grief and hardship.

Jonghyun was a successful kpop idol and artist, who showed us only the brightest side of his life. We did not, and could not know about the darkness and inner demons he had faced, especially in such a vulnerable industry that thrives on outer appearances. May this be a reminder for the awareness needed in mental health issues, and to promote increased aid and support for those who are in similar situations, so that they will not feel such loneliness and helplessness. 

Thank you Jonghyun, for supporting us with your energy, voice, and music, even when you were going through such dark times. You are dearly loved by many, and may you rest in peace.
