It’s funny the way stories find their way to us when we most need them. Many of my peers grew up watching Gilmore Girls but it was never something that crossed my path. So many episodes of Law and Order… Sick days full of Judge Judy. The copious amount of Friends reruns my mother and I would watch back-to-back… and yet never one episode of Gilmore Girls.

In the past few months, I have binged 7 seasons and the highly criticized Netflix reunion season. As a new fan, I fell in love. With Stars Hollow, with every character big and small. I fell in love with how messy and fun and raw life was portrayed through every script, every season.

I found so much of myself, of my life, within the Gilmore Girls themselves. My story may not be the same, but I come from a line of very independent women. My grandma was a young single mother just like Lorelei. My mother and I are both only children, like Lorelei and Rory. Today we’re still three generations of strong women. Just like the Gilmore Girls. 

Like Rory, I went to private school. Was praised for my academic and extracurricular success. Worked hard to follow the right path and play by the rules. Like Rory, I’ve struggled in my adult life to find structure. To feel solid in my life plan. In watching her grow from 7 seasons into an accomplished writer who still struggles, still doubts herself, but pushes forward each day. There’s a hope in having a community behind you.

After 7 seasons, you start to feel like you are a part of Stars Hollow. You become invested in the magic that unfolds with every Hay Bale Maze, every lunch at Lukes, every dance recital at Miss Patty’s...

Life is messy. Life takes time. But life can be magical when you find your family.
