Okay so I love the Jurassic Park franchise with my entire being, but Jurassic World Rebirth lwk disappointed me. I was super excited going into the theater but when I left I was underwhelmed. The characters seemed so static and set in their ways, the world building was minimal and there wasn’t much focus on the dinosaurs themselves. Overall I’d give it a 6/10, here are my thoughts.
I wish the D-rex had more of a focus, like it’s brought up once in the beginning of the movie and it feels like the filmmakers forgot about it until the very end where they seem to just stick it in a scene randomly. In the first Jurassic Park, the T-rex is treated consistently as a big deal and chases the group around the park throughout the movie. The D-rex, however, only shows up in the last bit of the movie just to ruin the group’s plan of escaping. I think it would’ve been so cool if there a was a bigger focus on the experimentation on the dinosaurs and the unethical-ness of companies using dinosaurs for entertainment (we’ve had this plot line in all the movies before this one, and i just wish they would’ve stuck to it a little more).
What is up with the world building?? Last we saw, dinosaurs were running rampant throughout the world, and now all the sudden every single one outside the equator is dying??? like??? Obviously this was going to happen since our current environment isn’t compatible with dinosaurs but like the switch from learning how to coexist with dinosaurs to a crazy lore drop, “oh yeah they’re all dying or dead.” is INSANE. like damn let us down easy or just lead up to it better
Personally I thought Zora was a confusing character, she doesn’t seem to have very strong morals. She was persuaded very quickly to join the mission solely based on money but i would’ve loved to see her with more hesitation on working for ParkerGenix. She is immediately set up as on the company’s side, then halfway through the movie Loomis brings up how it’s unethical to hoard the future cure for heart disease from the world and we barely get to see the inner conflict Zora faces that leads her to make her final decision, siding with Loomis. I would’ve wanted Zora to make this decision all by herself and be strong in what she stands for, whether she ends up being a morally corrupt character and taking the money, or learning and growing through her own experiences and sharing the DNA with the world.
Sorry but Duncan should’ve died. I LOVED his character, I thought he was really interesting and I loved the dynamic he had with his crew members, HOWEVER. His whole “thing” is that he cares deeply about the people in his life(especially children, having lost a child before) and he sacrifices himself so everyone can escape the island, kind of a final act of his life’s purpose type thing. Duncan’s death could’ve been meaningful, but instead they had him come back. I’m not complaining because I love him but what was the point of “killing” his character if he comes back in like 2 minutes before anyone has properly grieved or had their lives drastically changed by his assumed death. Yes, they got off the island because of him but I think it would’ve been cool for him to be left there and have an end credits scene where months later Duncan sends a signal from the island, forcing Zora and the group to go back to rescue him, setting up the next movie in the franchise
I wish more had been done with Xavier’s character. He went through a little bit of character growth when he jumped in after Teresa when she fell off the boat and actually took his turn doing night watch while everyone slept, but after that you don’t really get to see much else from him. I would’ve loved to see his character have to take on even more responsibility because of the dad being hurt, or even just exploring the dynamic he has with his girlfriends dad a little more, GIVE ME ANY KIND OF CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT GARETH EDWARDS PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU. When he was like “I don’t even know why Teresa’s with me” and the dad was like “because she sees the real you” or something like that, THATS WHAT WE NEEDED TO SEE. Show us the Xavier Teresa sees and show us why she loves him, it would make his character so much more compelling. Overall, he’s an interesting character and i just wish we could’ve seen more from him.
