10 Most Disturbing Films I’ve Ever Seen
I started writing this because I needed a distraction from current events. Now I’m not sure if it’s a good time for a disturbing films list as I’m going through it? But at the same time, I will say that the scarier and/or more disturbing I find a film to be, the farther out of reality I am taken. So maybe a film or two on this list will be a good distraction for someone out there. And hey, maybe it’ll also serve as a good list of movies for some people to stay away from.
Anyway, these are the films I couldn’t finish, that wigged me out pretty hard, and/or stuck with me for a while afterward. These are ranked and not definitive, of course. I am but one person. Spoiler alerts for some of the movies on this list. I don’t necessarily recommend these films, either. In fact, many of them, I recommend you specifically don’t watch. Make sure you read the trigger warnings if you decide to watch any of these. I probably missed a few because it’s been a while since I’ve seen any of these, but I’m pretty sure I got the major ones.
Honorable mention (I couldn’t finish it):
Megan Is Missing (2011)
Genres: Found footage, horror, psychological
TW: SA, violence
A story about a girl who meets a creep on the internet in person and subsequently goes missing. I don’t remember enough about this film to properly give you all the TWs, but I do remember that I had to turn it off during the SA of a minor. The realism got to me.
Streaming: Nowhere free rn
10. Compliance (2012)
Genres: Thriller
TW: SA
This film is based off of a real phone call scam where a caller posed as a police officer and convinced the manager of a restaurant to perform illegal acts on an employee after telling her she stole money from a customer. This is horrifying on so many levels, especially considering it’s based on something that really happened. So scary :(!
9. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
Genres: Psychological, thriller, drama
TW: Mass shootings, SA, racism, homophobia, pregnancy
A film showcasing the struggle between reluctant mother Eva and her psychopathic son Kevin leading up to a night in which he commits the most vile of atrocities.
The way Ezra Miller portrays Kevin is utterly chilling. Eva makes some poor choices, but the characterization of this straight up evil child is really haunting, and you can almost understand why she fucks up as badly as she does. It makes you question what humanity is truly capable of, and that is a dark place to be. I do highly recommend this film if you’re able to watch it. The direction and acting are superb. I thought about this movie for a while after seeing it.
Streaming: Prime, Tubi, Pluto TV
8. Sleep Tight (2011)
Genres: Psychological, thriller
TW: SA, violence, pregnancy
Wow, 2011 was a sick year, eh? In this film, the unhappy concierge of an apartment building in Barcelona chloroforms a tenant at night in order to be closer to her. And then it gets worse. This film *starts off* creepy. It only gets worse and worse. It will make your skin crawl from start to finish. It’s always someone you know….
Streaming: Tubi, Shudder, Pluto TV
7. Inside (2007)
Genres: Horror, home invasion
TW: Home invasion, pregnancy, violence, gore
This film is probably the last on this list I would actively recommend, but only if you really wanna be scared. It involves the attack on a pregnant woman in her own home by a stranger who wants her unborn baby. True to form for new wave French horror, it is brutal and terrifying. Even more so when you realize that this sort of stuff happens in real life.
Streaming: Nowhere
6. Irreversible (2002)
Genres: Psychological, thriller, drama, r*pe revenge
TW: SA, violence, gore, alcohol, drugs
Irreversible starts off hard to watch and doesn’t get any easier as it progresses. It’s about how the lover and ex boyfriend of a r*pe victim decide to enact revenge on the r*pist told in reverse chronological order. I hear a lot of people find this film unwatchable, and I believe it. I would definitely not recommend it if you’ve got a weak stomach.
Streaming: Tubi
5. I Spit On Your Grave (2010)
Genres: R*pe revenge, horror
TW: SA, violence, gore, alcohol, drugs
A novelist travels from NYC to Louisiana to work on her next project. Along the way she meets several men who get together and decide she “needs to be taught a lesson.” They assault her, and she enacts revenge.
I remember this film being exploitative, and I remember explicitly thinking that men shouldn’t direct r*pe revenge movies after finding out the director is a man. Do not recommend.
Streaming: Tubi
4. Martyrs (2008)
Genres: Psychological, horror
TW: Gore, violence, child ab*se, self h*m, torture, nudity
A young woman embarks on a quest for revenge on the people who ab*sed her as a child, which leads to her and her best friend going on a hellish journey. I’m not sure what to say about this film. It’s quite shocking. I would say definitely don’t watch it if you’re not in a good headspace and/or have any concerns about the TWs.
Streaming: Tubi
3. The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)
Genres: Mockumentary, horror
TW: SA, violence, kidnapping, torture, child ab*se, nudity
In Poughkeepsie, New York, police raid a house and discover hundreds of videotapes made by a serial killer that serve as a visual record of the killings. If you want to be horrified and disgusted, this is the film for you. Again, just be sure to heed the TWs. It is not an easy one to get through.
Streaming: Prime, Tubi, Pluto TV
2. Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Genres: Found footage, horror
TW: *Real* killing of animals, SA, violence, gore, cannibalism, racism, nudity
This is tied for number 1. An American university professor and film crew go missing in the Amazon rainforest while making a documentary about indigenous cannibal people. It shows people actually killing animals. On that basis alone, I won’t recommend it. I almost turned it off and had to look away. It’s also just not even a good movie. I gave it the lowest possible rating on Letterboxd.
Streaming: Shudder
1. A Serbian Film (2010)
Genres: Horror
TW: N*crophilia, SA, CP, p*dophilia, inc*st, violence, gore, torture, alcohol, drugs, sex, nudity
I was dreading talking about this. I dread acknowledging this film’s existence. It’s about a retired porn star trying to make ends meet by signing onto do a mysterious art film project. Little does he know what depravity awaits him. I cannot stress the depravity enough. They were literally like, “what are the most depraved things you can possibly think of? Let’s do that!” I think I’ve blocked a lot of it out. I probably didn’t even get all the TWs. I feel filthy writing about this film. I cannot not recommend it enough. Do not watch this film.
Streaming: This film will probably not stream on anything ever. You have to buy it or know someone.
Interesting that almost all of these came out from 2000-2011. What were we going through those years as a society that made us want to make that kind of content? And as it turns out, I really would only recommend them up until number 6. It just gets to be a bit much from there. No judgment if you’re into that sort of thing. That’s why I made this list, no? Some of these are even regarded as classics, so it’s all in the eye of the beholder. What are the most disturbing movies you’ve ever seen? Do you agree with any of these? Lmk!
