She'd been so engrossed in her work, she almost hadn't noticed the other woman approaching from behind. It's only at the last second that her footsteps become audible, the sound of another voice startling Annette out of a deep focus.

"Oh — um, what?"

There's a twinge of guilt when she realizes — she's relieved that it isn't William come to pester her about one thing or another. It's an occurrence that's become unfortunately commonplace, sparking many an argument between them. Her shoulders visibly relax. Much as she might love him, she expected him to outgrow these behaviors by now. He doesn't seem to consider how his own reputation often reflects back onto her.

There's a brief flicker of annoyance in her gaze then. She has been spending more time alone and she very much would've liked it to stay that way. Annette runs a hand over her face, fully conscious of the heavy bags under her eyes and the strands of hair hanging loosely from her forehead. She must look like hell. "Right. Yes, I'm ... just observing the cultures here and how they're progressing." It's not difficult, and she certainly doesn't need any help. She shouldn't need help.
