When I was like 6 or maybe 7, my school had some kind of costumed dance in the school hall for us. It was 'Aladdin'-themed and pretty much a waste of time, because I don't recall many kids bothering to go. I had no intention of going either, but then for some reason changed my mind like the night before, which wasn't ideal for making a costume. Anyway, all the girls obviously went as Princess Jasmine and some of the boys were Aladdin, and then there were a couple of Genies and I think an Abu. I went as the lamp. Just 'The Lamp'. I wore all yellow with a plastic yellow rain hat and a yellow inflatable floating ring around my waist for the shape and yellow material curving down to my shoes. I'm sure I looked ridiculous, but you can bet I wasn't going to adhere to what everyone else was doing. I think once I'd made my entrance I was probably ready to go home. I remember nothing else about the night.

you know, some branches of mathematics are absolutely dogshit at naming things, but credit to the fellas over in higher-dimensional geometry, they're knocking it out of the park

DIGGING CORPS - LOG 492/- 79 are morons. They reckon just because they got their own shuttle ride that they’re on a top secret mission or something. Surprise, Dumbass! It’s dirt. The mission is dirt. Doesn’t matter where. It’s always fucking dirt.
DIGGING CORPS - LOG 494/- Zero idea why this place was called ‘Iron Tank’ given there’s no tank here, iron or otherwise. Maybe it’s just gone like everything else. Pretty standard basecamp for local units. I’d conjured up wishful ideas of a big freshwater tank or something where I could fill my canteens, but no such luck. Guessing maybe it was a military tank, but no clue what it was doing out here. My history’s for shit, but I don’t recall any heavy artillery went on in Nevada worth naming a place after. Hitching a ride with a removal truck heading north. Not sure where exactly.
DIGGING CORPS - LOG 497/- Found a lake of sorts, if you wanna call it that. Long since gone sour, but I risked washing in it anyway. If the government’s willing to pay us to dig up three feet of topsoil from the entire unstate for some inane reason, what are they expecting us to do with the rest of the topography? Are we supposed to try and skim three feet of water off the top of lakes, too?
DIGGING CORPS - LOG 498/- A boy. Maybe fourteen. Down by the water. He was red as a beet with sunburn and had a certain bent to his movements that worried me. I gave him my name and asked his and whether he was with anyone. He wouldn’t answer more than pointing to the sharply-sloped ridge on the opposite shore. I considered calling him ‘Ridge’, before rejecting that idea in disgust. Just because I didn’t know his name, that didn’t mean I could give him one. Jesus. He wasn’t a stray dog. He eyed my yardstick stonily and I thought about explaining it was just for measuring how deep to dig, but he was right to be wary. It's a weapon too. Plenty of trespassers have only seen them used as cudgels. Either way, he seemed less interested in me than the toxic water he was shoveling into his mouth. Must've tasted awful, but he seemed beyond caring and I couldn’t fault him. There was a world of missed possibilities behind his eyes. He'll be retching later at the very least, if it's not the death of him.
DIGGING CORPS - LOG 499/- Shit. Ridge followed me. I woke to find him going through my pack. He'd taken a liking to my boots. I liked them too. When he saw me sit up, he made to bolt with all of my supplies. I was too drowsy to have caught him if he ran and without my map and rations there's a good chance I'd die out here. Reaching blindly, it was a 50/50 chance what I grabbed in the dark. If I’d used the yardstick things may have been different, but that wasn’t to be. As he turned away, I hit him on the side of the head with the shovel. He fell. And then he rolled down the steep embankment and into the muddy lake.
Had you hoped I would befriend the boy? Adopt him and lead him out of the wilderness? I had considered that scenario, perhaps a bit quixotically. I didn’t know how to mark the grave. I dug it with my hands. Using the shovel seemed cruel.

DIGGING CORPS - LOG 462/- Dispatch has officially confirmed I am now the single surviving member of Unit 77. Already knew, but whatever. Protocol states I am to join 76 or maybe those '9th Humboldt' hacks over at New Toiyabe. They better send a shuttle if they want me there. I'm not walking in this heat. For now, I'm just gonna don a ProxSuit and stare at the sun for a bit.
DIGGING CORPS - LOG 488/- Just been thinking about the last greenie we put through 'Seventh Trench'. With this Section of the unstate of Nevada being flatter than most between mountain ranges, the usual method of excavation, namely six parallel trenches in a row, is more pronounced and can be seen stretching way off across the desert to the horizon. The dig for this takes weeks to complete by several work teams within a unit. Whenever a new recruit arrives fresh from dispatch, by way of welcome, six of us take them to view the trenches, and claim we each individually dug one ourselves. Then we hand them a shovel and tell them they had until next morning to dig the seventh. Seems kinda cruel now, but as far as initiation rituals go it's pretty standard. Most of them give it their best to at least start on 'their' trench before the foreman inevitably chews them out for digging out of turn. We had a couple try to quit on the spot, which usually told us who we could trust. But the last recruit we had didn't say nothing. He just worked at it for hours. No technique about it, but he had heart, I guess. And when they do it in earnest, it's not nearly as funny. They found him collapsed from exhaustion around dawn. He was dead before they got him to the Mess tent. Don't think I ever knew his name. Didn't say a word. Pretty sure they still do it in other Sections, but that was the last greenie we put through 'Seventh Trench'.
DIGGING CORPS - LOG 491/- Spent some time at Canvas City. Traded out what I could to lighten the load. Got less than I would've liked for that amber earring I found at northern edge, but I guess it was only one of them, so I can't complain. Headed for New Toiyabe this evening. They said I could hitch a ride with Unit 79 as far as Iron Tank, but I'm on my own the rest. Just my shovel and yardstick for protection. ProxSuit's got a hole in the knee. Hoping I won't need it too much this time of year. They're made for digging, not hiking in. Wish I had a mirror. I hardly know myself.
