come, find me lying in the bed i made
A/N: my (late) contribution to day 3 of carolnat week ( @carolnatweek ). i went with one fic, scrapped it last minute and decided to write another short one-shot, ended up with a 4k word monstrosity instead, oops.

I.
The first time Carol meets Natalia, she’s eleven years old, and out on her family’s annual camping trip.
She’s sharing the tent with her brother, who wouldn’t stop snoring, and she can’t seem to go back to sleep no matter how hard she tries, so she unzips the flap and slips out into the darkness outside the tent. The air outside is cool and heavy with the promise of a thunderstorm later that morning, and she tilts her head up, enjoying the cold breeze against her sweat-slicked face. The inky blackness of the night is slowly giving way to daylight now, and she can see the faintest streaks of pink starting to make their way across the sky – the forest surrounding them seems much less foreboding in the early dawn, the hulking, almost-sinister shadows of the trees fading into a dull, misty grey, and she scrambles her way up the trunk of the oak tree just at the edge of the clearing, sprawling herself across one of its lower branches as she waits for the rest of her family to wake.

Pairing: Natasha Romanoff x Carol Danvers (carolnat) Summary: Natasha used to have nothing, until she got this family. But now everything is slipping through her fingers, and Carol comforts her the only way she knows how. Warnings: Endgame spoilers. Smut. 18+/read responsibly  Genre: Soft angst, fluff, comfort, smut NOTE: tagging @agentnatasharomanov as the carolnat captain certified crackhead fic dealer 😂 Count: 2181 ⊶⊷⊶⊷⊶⊷⋆⊶⊷⊶⊷⊶⊷ “That’s all for today. Make sure you stay in touch,” Natasha said to the holograms before the call ended.  Carol hadn’t been able to make it to the call, but Natasha assumed that was because the blonde was busy with her mission, she would most likely call the redhead later.  Swallowing with a sigh, Natasha got up to head to the kitchen. She was getting pretty sick of takeout, but with no one else in the compound, there wasn’t much she could do.  Grabbing out the bread from the pantry, she also grabbed herself some cheese from the fridge. She was going to make a grilled cheese.  She could do this, she thought. She’s a fucking spy, for crying out loud. Its name was the recipe, so it should be fine.

Hello I love your work so much. Could you please bless us with something smutty where carolnat get caught by some of the other avengers?
“Stop looking at me like that.” muttered Carol, the strain in her voice obvious as she exhaled slowly and pushed up the weights again.
From where she was stood beside Carol’s head at the top of the bench press, Natasha couldn’t complain about the view, “Eighteen ... how am I looking at you?”
“You know exactly how Romanoff and you’re gonna get us in trouble again.” warned Carol playfully, huffing out a grunt as she lifted the weights from her chest.
“Nineteen.” Natasha smiled innocently, “I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean.”
“Is that so?” breathed out Carol, lowering the weights slowly and ticking an eyebrow, “Cause if I didn’t know better, I’d say you were checking me out.”
“Really?” mused Natasha, raking her eyes slowly over the length of Carol’s body and smirking, “It’d be kind of hard not to watch you, wouldn’t want you hurting yourself.”
Carol snorted as she started her final rep, “The idea that you could save me is amusing, I’ll give you that.”
“Twenty. And just cause you’ve got your magic, twinkly hands, doesn’t mean I couldn’t still kick your ass.”
Laughing louder as she set the weights back on the rack, Carol sat up straight and turned her body towards Nat, ducking her head and eyeing the other woman with a grin, “Oh really?”
“I think I could take you.”
“Hmm.” Carol brushed the few stray hairs that had fallen across her forehead out of her eyes, rising to her feet and stepping towards Natasha so she could rest her hands on her hips, “And where would you take me exactly?”
“How about ...” Natasha’s eyes drifted to the ceiling as she thought about it for a second, tapping her chin a few times until she felt Carol dig her fingers impatiently into her waist, “Right here?”
“I told you that you were gonna get us in trouble.” started Carol with a grin, bending down enough to grip the underside of Natasha’s thighs and lifting her off the ground. “But I still don’t think it’s gonna be you taking me.”
Natasha huffed in mock disappointment, wrapping her legs around Carol’s waist and combing a hand through her hair to push it back from her face, “Oh no, that sounds awful.”
“My poor baby.” teased Carol, reaching one hand to Natasha’s face and skimming her thumb over her lower lip as she took a few steps forward.
Natasha wrapped her arms around the blonde’s shoulders, fingers tracing down the back of her neck and not missing the way Carol shivered at the action, “Put your money where your mouth is then, Captain.”
Carol walked a little further forward until she could rest a knee at the bottom of the bench press and press their lips together eagerly. For all of her joking about Natasha being a distraction during her work out, both women knew that when it came down to it, Carol struggled just as much with keeping her mind out of the gutter when it came to Nat. The way Natasha would look at her sometimes was enough to make her skin flush hot and it made it impossible to be anything other than impulsive.
She lost herself quickly, using her weight to push Natasha backwards until she was lay flat on her back with Carol on top of her. Not that Natasha was about to complain about her current predicament, pulling at the front of Carol’s vest as she opened her mouth further to deepen the kiss and moaning at the sensation of Carol’s tongue dipping into her mouth. It grew hungry and desperate within seconds, the kiss all tongue and teeth as hands clawed at whatever they could reach. Carol rocked her hips gently, feeling Natasha’s thighs tighten around her waist and teeth snagging at her lower lip in response.
Carol’s hands moved from where they were resting against Natasha’s hips, travelling up and over her rib cage to take a hand full of her breasts, one of her thumbs moving to circle over Natasha’s nipple and feeling it harden immediately through the thin material of her sports bra.
Natasha hissed out a breath and broke the kiss as she felt Carol’s fingers pinch at her nipple harshly, the blonde barely missing a beat before attaching her lips to Natasha’s throat instead.
It felt like no time at all before Carol’s hands had moved again, this time tugging eagerly at the waistband of the red head’s workout pants. Natasha raised her hips off the bench slightly to help, making it easier for Carol to pull them down just enough that she could slip her hand down the front of them and graze the front of Natasha’s underwear with her thumb.
In a failed attempt to stifle a moan, Natasha gripped either side of Carol’s face to bring their lips back together, mumbling the words almost frantically against her mouth, “Fuck me, please.”
For a moment Carol considered making a smart ass comment of some kind, maybe even teasing Natasha into begging for it. But the dampness she could feel soaking through the cotton of Nat’s underwear combined with the way she was tugging at her hair and the fact she was kissing her like her life literally depended on it was all too compelling of an arguement to deny her.
Almost immediately she complied, pressing down harder and circling the pad of her thumb firmly over Natasha’s clit through her underwear and practically shuddering in satisfaction at the moan it earned her. The kiss was becoming messier quickly, Natasha’s heavy breathing and whimpering and writhing making it difficult to keep much control of the situation. She felt like she was going to downright lose her mind with how badly she wanted it as Carol started to trace the outline of her underwear, fingers skimming lightly over her skin in a way that made Natasha feel like every hair on her body was stood on end. Her stomach tightened and she could feel the arousal pooling between her legs in a way that only Carol seemed to have the power to do and it made her pull harder on her hair and grind her hips down more eagerly towards her hand in a bid for more friction.
Natasha was so utterly lost in her own arousal and need that the fact the two of them were in the gym of the compound had completely left her head. With the way Carol’s fingers pushed her underwear to one side and traced the length of her pussy, Natasha could be forgiven for forgetting that this was by no means a private setting.
The sound of a bell ringing several times snapped both women out of their daze, separating themselves from one another in what had to be record-breaking time as Carol jumped to her feet, flattening a hand over her hair and Natasha pulled her pants back up before bringing her knees up to her chest and clearing her throat awkwardly. Both women were visibly blushing at the interruption they had received, somewhat embarrassed and equally frustrated at being caught in such an intimate moment.
“You know when you’ve got your opponent pinned on her back Danvers, it usually means the fight is over.” teased Tony, ringing the bell at the side of the boxing ring one more time for good measure. He looked relatively amused unlike the others stood around him; neither Steve, Rhodey or Sam entirely sure where to look.
“Ohhh is that how it works? ... My bad, see I was waiting for a tap out.” drawled Carol with mock interest, turning her head just enough to shoot Natasha a playful wink, “Sorry baby, apparently I don’t play fair.”
“I thought we talked about this? After the sofa incident? And the kitchen incident?” asked Sam, his tone feigning irritation but his smile betraying him.
“Yeah yeah, you know how it is ... we’re very sorry, won’t happy again.” rushed out Carol, already looking bored with the conversation and her mind drifting to what they could be doing instead if it hadn’t been for the interruption.
“You’re uncharacteristically quiet, Romanoff.” observed Tony, his smile teasing as he glanced over Carol’s shoulder to see Natasha rising to her feet and stepping closer.
Natasha rested a hand on Carol’s shoulder, using the blonde’s body to shield herself in an attempt to at least keep some of her dignity after being found flat on her back by her team mates. “I apologise whole heartedly for interrupting your gym session.”
Carol wanted to roll her eyes at the sarcasm, turning her head so she could see Natasha again and lowering her voice so no one else could hear, “I told you that you’d get us in trouble.”
“Whatever.” muttered Natasha, pressing a kiss to the side of Carol’s cheek with a smirk, “I think it’s time to hit the showers Danvers.”

One
Looking back on that day Natasha knows that if it hadn’t been for the severity of what was happening, she would have taken it all in differently. She would have noticed her breath catch in her throat at the sight of this literal fire ball of a woman as she landed on earth and looked at her for the first time. She would have savoured the way Carol’s hand had felt in her own as strong fingers gripped her palm and she introduced herself. If she hadn’t been so hopelessly distracted by the relief that flooded her system when the other woman brought Tony home, maybe she would have taken in that it was more than gratitude she was feeling.
Standing inside the compound as they discussed their next move, Natasha was too focused on the seriousness of the task at hand to take in that the new arrival had given her something she had craved for so long now: a sense of hope that maybe, everything was going to be okay after all.
The sheer lunacy of the fact she had boarded a space ship was far too consuming for Natasha to notice how her heart skipped when Carol tilted her head to laugh quietly at the bewildered faces of The Avengers. She probably should have taken in that the sight of Carol in her suit, pushing her hair out of her face as she focused on preparing for the impending fight, was something she enjoyed in a way that was definitely more than just admiration.
If she had been paying attention, Natasha might even have noticed that the other woman was looking at her in exactly the same way.
Two
A pile of takeout menus landing on top of her desk caused Natasha to near enough jump out of her seat, having been to consumed in reading through paperwork to pay attention to the fact that someone had approached her.
“What the hell?” Snapped Natasha, looking up from what she was reading to see who had interrupted her.
“If you’re gonna eat crap, at least do it properly.” Explained Carol, slipping into the seat opposite the red head. Dressed in a pair of grey sweat pants and an old band t shirt, Carol looked unusually casual and the sight had actually thrown Natasha. She allowed herself to scan over the blonde for a second as she propped her feet up on the desk and crossed one leg over the other. Natasha’s jaw clenched involuntarily when she saw the muscles in Carol’s neck and shoulders work as she shuffled herself into a more comfortable position, her hair tied up into a messy bun making it easier to admire than usual.
Looking down at the menus and then back up at the other woman, Natasha blinked and eventually kicked her brain back into gear, “What are you talking about?”
“If I see you eat one more peanut butter sandwich, I’m gonna throw it at you.” deadpanned Carol, nodding her head towards the plate on the desk.
“I like peanut butter sandwiches.” scowled Natasha, hand reaching towards the food on her desk.
Before she could grab her sandwich, Carol lunged forward and pulled the plate across the surface of the desk and out of Natasha’s reach, “I mean it, I’ll throw it at you.”
Natasha’s jaw slacked, staring disbelievingly back at the blonde as she folded her arms across her chest and leaned back in her chair, “Are you honestly holding my sandwich hostage?”
“No,” started Carol, dragging the word out slowly as she stood from her chair and picked up the food on the desk. Taking a few steps to her right, she tipped the plate on it’s side so the sandwich fell into the trash can at her feet, before looking back at Natasha. She was unable to hide a grin at the woman’s stunned face, “I’m offering to buy you dinner.”
Three
Carol left not long after that but you could forgive Natasha for not noticing the effect of her absence immediately. Not long after Carol left, it was Steve that moved out. He wanted to be back in Brooklyn, making a difference and helping people. Captain America couldn’t fix what had happened, but maybe Steve could help people move on. After Steve it was Bruce. He explained he had a lot of things he needed to figure out and he couldn’t do it at the compound. Natasha didn’t need any further explanation.
Slowly everyone seemed to be moving on, months went by and people tried to rebuild, change and adapt.
Natasha didn’t know how to do anything else. She kept things going in the compound, the loneliness only allowing her to fall even further into what she was doing. Even if all she was doing was communicating with everyone else and looking out for future threats, that was something right?
It wasn’t until four months after Carol had left that Natasha noticed how much she missed her. Logging into a conference call, the sight of her usual companions greeted her with one noticeable exception. Her stomach had dropped when her eyes had fallen on the area where Carol would usually be standing, seeing nothing but a dark, empty spot staring back at her. In that moment there was nothing she longed for more than to see the blonde smiling back at her.
Four
It was over a month before she heard from Carol again. With every conference call that went by, Natasha was unable to stop her eyes from darting straight to the other woman’s usual place in the group, and every time she had to hide her disappointment at her absence.
When Carol finally did connect to a call, she was greeted warmly by the others around her. It surprised Natasha that her initial joy at the sight of Carol was almost immediately replaced with annoyance. So she thought she could just disappear for a month and then waltz back in as if nothing had happened? She thought she could just ignore everyone and then appear again with that same wide smile like it was all okay? It was safe to say that Natasha’s irritation didn’t go unnoticed.
As the meeting ended, one by one the rest of the team disconnected but Carol remained, placing her hands behind her back and taking a step forward, “You okay?”
Natasha looked up from her desk in surprise. Having assumed that everyone had already ended the call, she hadn’t expected to see Carol’s hologram still standing in front of her. “I’m fine.”
“Clearly.” muttered Carol, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
Pinching the bridge of her nose, Natasha closed her eyes and exhaled slowly in an attempt to not just blurt out the first words that came into her head, “Its been over a month.”
“I’ve got a lot on my plate Nat, there are problems all over the universe.”
“And you couldn’t just let me know? You couldn’t take ten seconds to tell me you were going to be missing for a month?” Asked Natasha, dropping her hand from her face to look up at the other woman, “I didn’t know if you were alive or if you were planning on coming back. How would you like it if that was done to you?”
Pursing her lips in thought, Carol shrugged “You’re right, I’m sorry. I wouldn’t like it if I thought something had happened to you.”
Seeing Natasha’s brow quirk at her words, she quickly continued, “Or you know, if something happened to anyone.”
Natasha hummed in response, pushing some papers around her desk for no real reason other than for something to look at and to stop herself from just grinning at Carol like an idiot, “And there was me thinking you had a soft spot for me.”
“Hey you’re the one who’s been pining for a month.” teased Carol, shooting the read head a smirk.
Picking her pen up from her desk, Natasha launched it playfully towards Carol, both women breaking out into laughter at the fact she had just thrown something at a hologram, “Get out of here already.”
“I’ll speak to you next week okay?” assured Carol, the smile on her face one of someone trying to convey sincerity, “I have a little something in the pipeline that might come together, can’t really confirm anything yet but ... we can talk about it properly when I have a better idea of what’s going on.”
Nodding her head in mock understanding, Natasha batted her hand dismissively, as she turned her attention to her paperwork once more, “Yeah, yeah sure we can talk about it later once you have a clue what you’re saying.”
“Oh and Nat?” added Carol, waiting to continue until the red head looked back up at her, “I missed you too.”
Five
Working out had always helped as a way to calm Natasha down when she was feeling anxious or stressed. Unfortunately that was all she seemed to feel recently and the gym had become something of a home for her. She could spend hours just running on a treadmill, headphones in and eyes trained on the wall in front as she tried to focus on the burning of her muscles rather than the ache in her chest.
She had just finished wrapping her wrists, tearing off the end of the tape with her teeth and pressing it down before going to put her headphones in when she heard her.
“Wanna fight?”
Her head had snapped up at lightening speed, scanning the gym for the source of the question when her eyes finally settled on the warm, brown ones looking back at her. There was Carol leaning nonchalantly on her shoulder against the door to the gym, one leg crossed over the other and a wide grin on her face. She had obviously been back at least a little while, already changed from her suit into a pair of black leggings and a baggy vest. She looked tired but her smile didn’t falter as she stood up straight and started to walk further into the gym.
“What are you doing here?” Asked Natasha, hands falling to her sides as she stepped around the punching bag to face the other woman properly.
“There’s a couple of things I need to sort out.” explained Carol, taking a few more paces forward until she was standing just in front of Natasha, “I’ve been following a lead for a few weeks now, that’s why I’ve been so busy. Didn’t think it was going to lead me back to earth.”
“But why are you here?”
Looking down at the ground, Carol looked almost bashful for a second before shrugging and meeting Natasha’s eye again, “I wanted to see you.”
The words seemed to hang in the air for a second, a comfortable silence settling over the pair of them at Carol’s honesty. Finally a content smile settled over Natasha’s lips, allowing herself to give into what she was feeling just long enough to reach forward and brush her hand against Carol’s. Her thumb traced the length of the blonde’s palm before travelling up and over the top of her hand and down the length of her fingers. The action was quick and light but it had said enough to Carol; Natasha was glad she was here.
Six
It turned out that Carol had more than a couple of things to work out. Criminals all over the universe had been takin advantage of the mess that the snap had evoked. Theft was rife everywhere but it was the larger problems that had brought Carol back to earth. Preventing another war in all of the chaos was pressing.
In the most selfish way possible, Natasha was grateful. In the years leading up to the snap she had found herself surrounded by people she could trust and people she cared about. They worked together as a team and they were about as close a group of people you could find. Her time on the run with Steve and Sam and cemented her bond with the pair of them irrevocably and she had found herself feeling empty over the past few months in her solitude. Having Carol around had changed all that and she even felt a sense of purpose again. The blonde had asked for her help in her mission and Natasha had been only too happy, desperate to do anything that would be a help.
But it wasn’t just the working alongside someone that was making her feel whole again. It was everything that Carol had brought into her life. Having coffee together on a morning. Sitting quietly on the sofa and reading a book or watching television. Having someone to talk to about something as trivial as the weather. No longer eating dinner alone every night. Helping one another with training in the gym.
And the things about Carol that Natasha couldn’t get enough of? The sound of her laugh when Natasha would make a stupid joke. The way her eyes would crinkle closed sometimes because she would smile so wide. How sometimes Natasha would pass by the room Carol was staying in and she could hear the sound of the other woman singing. The way Carol always remembered how she liked her coffee. The tingling feeling she would get every time Carol left a lingering touch on her leg or her shoulder. How easily the two of them could fall into idle conversation and that there was never uncomfortable silences.
But the thing that Natasha liked the most about Carol, was that she never felt like she had to be anything other than herself. In the midst of a global tragedy it was unsurprising that things could get tense. Both women were guilty of sharing one or two harsh words in heated situations. The only thing that rivalled Natasha’s stubbornness was Carol’s ability to push her buttons so it was no surprise that they butted heads every now and again. But when things calmed down and the work was done, Natasha could still walk into the kitchen and find Carol pushing a mug of warm tea into her hand with a smile that said everything was okay and nothing needed to be said. She had never felt so completely and utterly understood by someone and the realisation that Carol wasn’t going to stick around forever, was something that Natasha couldn’t help but feel sad about.
Of course Carol noticed Natasha’s slight change in behaviour. Her smile didn’t seem as bright and her eyes didn’t shine with the same sparkle that they used to. Something was playing on her mind and Carol intended to find out what it was.
“Wine tonight?” Questioned Natasha, padding into the living room and gratefully accepting the drink that was being presented to her by the woman on the sofa, “What happened to our humble cups of tea on an evening?”
Carol shrugged, “I guess we’re celebrating kind of.”
“We are?”
Nodding her head, Carol took a sip of her wine as she watched Natasha collapse down onto the cushions beside her, “Mission’s nearly finished.”
Almost immediately Natasha stiffened and it was only in that second that Carol realised what had been bothering her recently. Letting out a long sigh, she reached to the side to place her wine down on the coffee table before shuffling closer to the other woman, “You think I’m just going to disappear again?”
“I know you have to go.”
Carol wet her lips, “If it helps, I don’t want to.”
“Definitely doesn’t help.” Muttered Natasha quietly, raising her glass to her mouth.
The blonde breathed out a laugh, “Can I just be blunt?”
“I’ve never known you be anything else.” answered Natasha, shooting a smirk over the rim of her glass.
The corner of Carol’s mouth curled as she reached forward to take the drink from Natasha’s hand, moving it to one side to join her own on the table. She shuffled a little further forward, sitting just an inch in front of Natasha so they were face to face. There was a pause where the red head genuinely wasn’t sure what was going to happen next and Carol wasn’t actually certain on what she was going to do, before she decided to just go with her gut. Pressing her hand to the side of Natasha’s jaw, she tightened her fingers against the back of her neck and leaned forward enough that she could press their lips together.
Natasha couldn’t help but sigh, allowing Carol’s grip on the back of her neck to pull them closer together as she parted her lips and deepened the kiss. It was soft and slow but somehow it felt greedy all the same, like this was something they had been deprived of for too long. Pushing herself further into the other woman, Carol nearly toppled the pair of them backwards and Natasha had to throw her hand out against the arm rest to keep them upright. The action caused both women the giggle, breaking the kiss as Carol sat back up properly but kept her hand pressed to the side of Natasha’s jaw.
“That was ...”
“Long overdue.” finished Natasha.
Carol laughed, nodding her head in agreement, “You’re right.”
Resting her hands on top of Carol’s thighs, Natasha tugged her legs towards her and smirked playfully, “Come back here and kiss me again then.”
Laughter increasing at Natasha’s words, Carol allowed herself to be pulled forward, settling properly into the other woman’s lap with her legs either side of her waist. Gripping Natasha’s face in her hands and reconnecting their lips, Carol decided that maybe their conversation about what was going to happen next could wait. For now, they had this.
Seven
Four long weeks passed after that. Carol had only been able to stay another couple of days before business took her off elsewhere and Natasha was once again left alone. Of course this time Carol called and left messages but now it was different. The sound of her voice wasn’t enough anymore when she now craved so much more. The feeling of Carol’s lips on hers, tongue slipping into her mouth, teeth nipping at her skin and bare flesh rubbing against her own was like a drug and Natasha needed more. Her body ached for the other woman in a way she hadn’t thought possible and she wanted nothing more than for each conversation they had while Carol was gone to be ended with a kiss or just a gentle touch, all the while knowing it wasn’t possible. Every time they spoke she wanted to ask when Carol would be back again but she never did, knowing that asking it would only make it harder for the both of them.
It was a quiet afternoon where for once Natasha had nothing to busy herself with. All of her paperwork was done, she had worked out until she was sore and she had done just about as much housework as she could face. She was just about to make herself a drink when she heard it. That loud, powerful sound that made her heart race at the possibility it could be her.
Natasha was moving before she could even think about anything else. Legs moving of their own accord despite the throb from her workout in the gym earlier. She took the stairs two at a time, hopping down the last four and breaking into a run at the bottom to head for the glass doors to the compound. In her haste she almost ran into the person she was looking for head on, the other woman already inside the building and standing in the foyer with much the same excitement written on her face.
She was still dressed in her suit, looking a little like she had travelled the world over in five seconds just to be here. But she broke into a broad grin none the less, opening her arms and tilting her head to one side, “Please tell me you missed me as much as I missed you.”
Natasha didn’t care about how pathetic she might have looked to an outsider, bolting forward in record time to wrap herself around the blonde and jump into her arms. Carol chuckled quietly, lifting the other woman off the ground with ease and snaking her arms around her waist.
Gripping onto Carol’s shoulders tight, Natasha pressed a lingering kiss to the other woman’s lips before leaning their foreheads together, “You have no idea.”
“I’m never being away from you for that long again.”
Natasha shook her head from side to side, moving her hands to grip either side of Carol’s face, “We can figure all of that out later, all that matters is you’re here.”
Smiling back at the other woman fondly, Carol raised her hand to brush her thumb over Natasha’s lower lip before moving to tuck a strand of hair out of her face, “You want me to show you how much I missed you?”
“You better.” Chuckled Natasha, tightening her hold on the blonde as she started to carry her further into the building and towards the stairs.
There was going to be a lot to figure out and there was still so much to fix. The world had it’s problems and they weren’t going to disappear overnight. Natasha knew that and so did Carol, both women more than aware that things were no doubt going to be complicated. But as Natasha wrapped her legs further around the other woman’s waist and felt Carol grip her harder in return, she realised that she didn’t much care if things were going to be difficult. As long as they had this, maybe she was right all along and things were going to be okay after all.

“Whoa, are you okay? You took that fall pretty hard.” Carol glanced at her friend above her. Since when was she one the ground? She groaned and moved to sit up, suddenly familiar with her surroundings.
“What happened?”
“Well... Bucky had a little bit too much to drink and then somehow he got pushed into you, which caused you to fall on your arm. How is your arm anyway?”
The blonde looked down and noticed a growing pain on her right arm. “It hurts, but it should be fine.”
“I don’t know Carol, I think you should get that checked out.” Steve spoke from behind her as he moved to help her get up. Carol shook her head no, but let out a loud yelp when her arm accidentally hit another persons side.
She gritted her teeth, “It’s fine.”
“C’mon, don’t make me drag you to the hospital.”
It wasn’t that Carol didn’t want the help, she just hated hospitals. Hospitals were where people went to die, and although Carol knew she wasn’t going to die of a possible broken arm, it still scared her to no end.
She grunted and looked away from the taller man. Steve rolled his eyes before picking Carol up and taking her to his car. There was no way he’d let any injury, no matter how insignificant, left untreated.
“Steve! Put me down!”
“I swear to god Steve you’re gonna pay for this.”
Steve ignored Carol’s threats as he made his way out to the car. He set her in the passenger side and started the car once he knew she wouldn’t escape.
No more than 10 minutes later and they were parked in the emergency room section of the hospital. Unsurprisingly, Carol refused to get out. Steve had a solution for that though.
“Tell you what, you go in there like a big girl and I’ll take you to your favorite place to eat afterwards. Whatever you want. All on me.”
Carol raised her eyebrow at the idea of making Steve spend all his money on her. She eventually (but not without slight hesitation) agreed and stepped out of the car, one arm cradling the other.
Steve checked her in and sat beside her. “You know it’ll be okay right? The hospital doesn’t always have to be a bad place.”
“People come here to die, Steve.”
“Not always. Think about it. Where do pregnant women who are about to give birth go? The hospital.”
“Yeah but-“
“Carol Danvers?”
The voice Carol heard was sweet, a little deep and croaky, but sweet. She looked up to find a redhead standing in the doorway of the next section of the hospital. Everything in Carol’s body froze. This time however, it wasn’t out of fear of the unknown; but panic. Panic because there was a beautiful woman standing directly in her line of vision calling her name.
Fingers snapping in her face brought Carol back to reality.
Both the redheaded nurse and Steve were looking at her, only one with a smirk on their face. The blonde nervously stood up and walked towards the nurse, reading her name tag on the way in.
“Only one person is allowed at a time. I’m sorry but your friend has to wait in the lobby.”
“I- um.. okay.” Carol’s hands grew shaky. If she had any idea she’d be alone during the process of getting her arm fixed – not to mention the pretty woman standing next to her, she would’ve never agreed to have come.
“Will you be alright?”
She narrowed her eyes at Steve, “You owe me big time for this one.” The door shut before he could reply and she was almost relieved for that.
“Follow me and we’ll weigh you real quick before getting you into a room.”
Carol stepped on the scale and watched the digital number calculate her body.
Fascinating. She thought.
After that she followed the shorter woman to an exam room. Carol chewed her lip with anxiety, she absolutely hated this situation.
“So I hear you’ve got a pretty bad arm, yeah?” The woman, Natasha, spoke with a smile on her face. Her voice immediately sent a calming affect through Carol’s body.
Carol nodded, unable to form a coherent sentence.
“Well good thing you’re here then. I’ll be taking care of that for you tonight. Lay back please.” The blonde swallowed her nerves, determined to not be such a wimp about it. But the truth was, it hurt. It hurt a lot.
“Quiet one, aren’t ya?”
No, you’re just really really pretty and I’m having an extremely gay panic.
“Well thank you.” Oh no. Carol looked up to find Natasha, now with an x-ray machine by her side, smirking. “I’m sorry- that wasn’t supposed to come out.”
“That’s a shame. I thought for sure it meant to.” She hummed, clicking buttons that activated the device.
Natasha placed a protective lead barrier on Carol’s chest before carefully moving her arm. She placed it flat under the machine, earning a wince from the blonde. “Sorry about that,” Natasha sheepishly replied.
Carol stared at the woman above her, fumbling around with all sorts of things. Natasha’s eyes were bright green against her scrubs and her nose had a slight curve to it that Carol had never seen on anyone else before. Her lips were pink and smooth, the woman definitely kept a spare chapstick somewhere.
“So how did this happen to such a pretty girl like you?”
“I-I don’t know really,” Carol stuttered shyly.
“You don’t know?” Natasha raised her eyebrow at the woman. “How is it you don’t know how you broke your own arm?” The x-ray machine buzzed and Carol flinched.
“Well I do know, I just-“
“You’re a nervous one.”
“Only around women I find attractive.” Carol’s reply sent a smile to Natasha’s face. “Cute.”
A moment of silence fell between the two as Natasha continued to snap pictures of her arm, each from a different angle.
When the photos processed, Natasha knew exactly what to do.“It seems to me that you have indeed fractured your arm. Let’s get that fixed. Sound good?”
“Yeah,” Carol mumbled as she sat up.
“I’ll be right back, don’t go anywhere.” Natasha said, ending it with a wink. Carol blushed and waited silently, swinging her feet off the edge of the exam table as a kid waiting on their parents would.
There was something about Natasha that Carol was intrigued by. Perhaps a new revelation of attraction to women with red hair and green eyes. Carol had never put much thought into it before, but looking back at all the women she’d been into, they all had some shade of auburn hair.
Thinking more deeply, Carol’s first crush at 15 was a young girl with bright ginger hair. Her second crush at 17 was a girl with dark, clearly dyed red hair. They were both pretty in their own way, but the woman she’d just talked to was astonishingly beautiful and she had no idea how to act. Her normal out-of-bounds self-proclaimed personality would had a fit at Carol being such a nervous wreck. But that’s how Natasha worked, she could take the breath away from anyone. Carol wasn’t used to having someone have so much power over her in such a short amount of time, but somehow her brain managed to accept it.
When Natasha came back, she had all the supplies she needed for Carol’s cast.
“I don’t get to pick a color?” Carol asked, a small frown forming on her face. Natasha giggled. “I thought you might enjoy a kiss a little more,” she fake sighed. “But if you’d rather have a colorful cast I’m happy to-“
“No!”
Carol’s voice was loud, and Natasha delivered another smirk. It was starting to become her thing, Carol thought. A heavy blush of embarrassment formed on the blonde’s face. Natasha knew exactly what she was doing, and she was doing it well.
She carefully wrapped Carol’s arm up, her cold fingers working against her skin. Carol watched Natasha do her work, curious as to how much she nurse knowledge she had.
“You know I don’t just give anyone kisses, Danvers. Consider yourself lucky.”
Finished, the redhead tilted Carol’s head up with two fingers and went for it. She kissed her. Carol used her other arm to deepen the kiss, only stopping when Natasha pulled away.
“Careful there. Now let me write on your oh-so-boring cast.” Natasha smiled as she pulled out a sharpie from her pocket. She turned her arm outward so that whatever she was writing could only be seen by Carol. Then she put a barrier between Carol’s line of site and her writing. “Now don’t look at this until you’re home. Got it?” Carol nodded, anxiously waiting for her to finish.
“Alright Danvers, you’re free to go. But not until you get a sucker.”
“Why would I need a sucker?”
Natasha shrugged, “Because I want you to have one.”Carol hummed but followed Natasha out the doorway and to the nearest bucket of suckers.
Natasha picked out a cherry flavored one, bright red with flavor. She stuck it in her mouth and sucked.
Maybe hospitals weren’t too bad after all.
The two of them met Steve out in the lobby, Carol with a bright smile on her face. “Remember what I said, Carol.” Natasha called from her spot as they left.
Steve walked his friend back to his car, and not too long after dropping her off at her house. But of course, he walked her to her door and made sure she got in safely.
She’d been anxiously waiting to see what Natasha wrote on her cast the whole car ride. And true to her word, she did wait. But now she was free to look at it.
See me again for a follow up ;)
Below that, her number was written so tiny that Carol almost couldn’t see it. She added it to her contacts and plugged in her phone as she laid in bed. Even out of her presence Natasha still had her blushing. And Carol was perfectly okay with that.
