#fun fact i have long fic ideas for both mito and palm#mito's set a few years down the line involving her finally leaving whale island#and palm's involves her trying to get used to the changes in her life post CA arc#not just turning into an ant but also her changes in interpersonal relationships to the ppl around her#I've also invented a whole ass back story for palm trying to make sense of why she is like she is#aaaaugh if only i had infinite time to write

I also love them a lot... I've always kind of wanted Mito to find a place she wanted to go for herself, but I also think it would be really nice if she and Gon went on a trip together too! And Palm backstory... if you don't mind sharing some of it, I'd love to hear it! I'm really intrigued! :D

HELLO friend sorry for taking a few days to reply. this past week has been one of the busiest i've had in a while.

I very, very much want to get to these fics and actively plan to - I just can't say how long it'll take. My foremost goal w/ writing rn is to finish my current multichapter (which was… supposed to be completed for a BB several years ago now… @__@ I just disliked the rushed ending I had) - then I only have 3 other potential WIPs I'd want to give a go at (Mito fic, Palm fic, and werewolf Killugon fic).

Yeah! I can't imagine Mito doesn't want to leave Whale Island and travel for herself, though I also think she perhaps has complicated feelings about the topic. The fic idea for her is based partially on exploring those feelings.

AS FOR PALM…

She's so fascinating, and there's so much we don't know about her. I've been interested for a while now in exploring the shift in her we see after she becomes a Chimera Ant, but the more I thought about it the more I felt that exploration would be more complete if we knew more about her past. Basically, I want to root her known characteristics in something more solid.

For example - one of her biggest issues, as it seems to me, is emotional dysregulation/instability in both the negative and positive extremes. She's quick to anger, deeply fearful of being disappointed, and generally off-putting to most people. She's also very quick to attach herself to those who show her the slightest shred of kindness. Where does that come from?

Other interesting things we know about her, but don't know the history behind include:

She's a very talented chef

She's good enough at acting and disguising herself to be the team's go-to for infiltration

Where the fuck her merman corpse crystal ball came from??? It's not a nen thing, as far as we know.

Of course there's no one right way to explain any of this, but I've had a lot of fun dreaming up what could have happened to make her into the person we initially meet. I'm putting a basic outline of the backstory I've invented for her below the cut.

Only child of her parents

Palm is interested in the occult from a young age - an interest that carries on into adulthood

Finds things most people find unsettling/weird/ugly to be cute and interesting (based on the fact that she refers to the fossilized dead merman as 'cute.')

Father abandoned her and her mom when she was young, started a separate family

As Palm grows, she is forced more and more into a caregiver role for her mother.

Relationship w/ mom is complicated. Palm is a parentified child. There is love between them, but also a LOT of strain. Mom neglects parental role, some emotional abuse follows.

Mother is emotionally dysregulated as well and is unable to help Palm learn to better manage this shared characteristic

The mother's mental and physical health dwindles enough that Palm also leaves school to work & support them both.

At least one of the jobs Palm works is as some sort of fortune-teller-esque job. It's the job she likes most, allows her to engage w/ her interests.

Does tarot readings, palmistry, etc - whatever potential customers are interested in. She becomes very good at acting the part - giving vague answers, leading customers to reveal info, etc.

Finds merman crystal ball??? somehow?? awakens actual clairvoyance through it

Stories of Palm's clairvoyant abilities grow, this is how Knov hears about her

By the time Knov seeks Palm out, Plam's mother is in poor enough health that Palm knows she isn't long for this world

Eventually Palm's mom dies, which frees her up to become Knov's student, etc.

There are other details and such I'm still tinkering with, but yeah. That's it for now. None of this has any bearing on canon, of course, but imagining the possibilities for her past has made Palm - at least the version of her in my head - feel like a fuller, more complete character.
