About
I'm Jasmine Purves and I'm very much into Grunge design as well as the music. Designers like David Carson, Neville Brody, Chris Ashworth and Mike King inspire me and you may see some of the inspirations in my designs. I love to experiment using different techniques and new materials as I think you can create interesting designs. I'm interested in working in the music industry, designing album covers, merchandise and posters, so I always aim to create something unique and memorable.

Theme: Body and matter
Outcome
I created a magazine called Unfiltrd inspired by The Face and Ray Gun magazines. It uses vulgar language as there's no censorship, no filters. I focused on unhealthy beauty standards. The aim was to make young adults and teens feel seen and accepted, and I did this by using photos that show 'imperfections' and including articles where teens share personal stories.
I used my own photographs and wrote my own articles.

Theme: Body and matter
(Idea development & artist response)
I was beginning to explore beauty standards and its effects on mental health. I researched Hans Eric Olson as I loved his use of doll like makeup and I wanted to make something inspired by him. My aim was to create something unsettling and exaggerated by using doll makeup and warped effects on my scanner, linking with unrealistic beauty standards and how it affects individuals and how one may lose their sense of self.
I created these using my scanner on my printer.

Theme: Body and matter
(outcome idea development)
I was experimenting with typography for my magazine. I used cutting, glass, scanner and tape. Inspired by David Carson's typography, I wanted to get creative and try different techniques.

Theme: Body and matter
(Idea development)
I was exploring the Identity part of the theme. I created Lino prints of my boots as I felt that shoes are a part of personal identity and say a lot about a person.
Originally, it was going to be a series of Lino prints of people's shoes but I went with a different idea.

Theme: Relics, objects, memory
(Outcome Idea)
I created an album cover for a grunge-gaze band Superheaven's upcoming album as I felt that their music fit the theme of memory and growing up. I tried to show these themes and the genre of the music while fitting the vibe of the band by adding elements like handwritten type and doodles and focusing on the colour.

I created a flyer for an instagram post for Superheaven. I created this for fun as I wanted to go to the show. I used Photoshop and textures by DoronSupply.
The swirls in the background were actually ink splatters in the sink that I took a photo of because I thought it looked interesting.

Theme: Opposites
(Primary research)
I explored both nature and manmade objects on my A6 concertina sketchbook through observations. I used various materials such as spray paint, markers, acrylic paint, coloured pencils, pastels, fine liners, ballpoint pens.

Theme: Zeitgeist
(Outcome)
I created a banner that focused on the Seattle Grunge Movement. My aim was to get viewers to understand what the movement was about and feel the essence of grunge by looking at my banner. I did this by going for an unpolished look and using scrap materials as grunge was anti-consumerism and making my own patches of song lyrics and quotes.
Materials: old fabric scraps, viscose, calico and cotton (which I used Citrasolv to print images and quotes/song lyrics onto), buttons, staples, fishnets and nylon.

Theme: Zeitgeist
(outcome 2)
I focused on Grunge and created grunge music flyers. My aim was to get viewers get a feel of the music scene and transport them back to the 90s as music flyers were used a lot. I did this by using the style and some of the techniques they used during that time to make flyers.
I used Lino print for the first flyer, citrasolv and collage for the second flyer, and then photoshop for the third flyer.
