just imagine that james potter did not meet his best friends on the train, but at the feast, and got sorted into their dorms, but they were all eleven and awkward so it took them a while to become actual friends, you know?

so little jamie potter - sheltered and raised by his adoring parents, has no idea how to make friends but he saw remus eat chocolate once and so dropped whole ass chocolate bars into the boy's bag whenever he wasn't looking(confusing the hell out of remus). he would lean over and draw stars on sirius' parchment when he wasn't looking and always carried extra quills cos sirius would get bored in lesson and accidently break them so james would pop up awkwardly and offer one out to him. he memorised peter's timetable and hand-copied out a map of hogwarts he found and left it on his bed because he knew peter had no sense of direction and was always getting lost.

because james potter loved people the way he was raised - slow and devoted and quiet and loyal- and he became brothers with people who taught him to also love in a way that is loud and colourful and obnoxious.

I hate it when Peter is ignored. I hate it when he isn't included. I hate it when he barely says anything. I hate it when he's just the other guy in the marauder's dorm room. I hate it when he's the one that's always scared. I hate it when he's the one that's always nervous. I hate it when his entire character is just 'the one who doesn't fit in'. 'The one who doesn't belong'.

Because he did belong. He was probably funny. He was probably just as excited for their pranks. Sure, he wasn't as smart as them. He wasn't as powerful. But he still became an animagus for Remus. He was still a part of all their schemes. James, Sirius and Remus would never exclude him. Because to them, he wasn't pretending. He wasn't an imposter.

He was chosen to be the secret keeper because he was trusted. Because he was their friend. Because he was one of them. Somewhere along the way, that changed, yes. But he wasn't always like that. That's why his betrayal hurts. That's why no one saw it coming.

It's easy to forget that he really was a marauder. Yes, when it mattered the most, he chose not to be. But he was. And that meant something.

there’s something about characters who have this inherent need to be good. they get upset. they get angry. but still, they smile. through demons and through disease, they smile. because they need to be that person. they need to be the anchor for their friends and family, people always crave the warmth of the sun on a winter day.

this character isn’t a “sunshine character” because they are naturally an optimist or problem-solver, but because they are falling apart and they need to prove that they are worth loving.

if they are not kind now, how can they expect forgiveness for when they are not?

and I think these 2 things can and should coexist and maybe they’re even the same guy :)

Give me James not caring one bit that Regulus never wanted anything more than just talking and sometimes cuddling

Give me regulus crying to Evan (who’s also trans) about how disgusting he feels about himself and Evan understanding and being super open about how he gets through it and that helps regulus.

Give me regulus getting to a point like 6 years into his and James relationship where he felt safe and comfortable enough in himself to have sex

Give me James checking in on him before, during and after the entire thing and then give me James not caring that they go months without having sex and he’s just happy that reg is becoming more comfortable in his body that he can start to want things

why do people blur out barty's trauma in fics????? I rarely ever see anything about it. It's always "barty is just a psychotic little twink!" not "barty can't even contemplate who he is as a person because he's had that forced from his hand by his father."
