About Bloody Time
Pairing : Sirius Black/Reader
Plot : Lily, you and the Marauders (except Peter) are going on a camping trip. Only problem : you hate Sirius Black. Or do you, really ? Well, you'll still have to share a tent anyway !
Word count : 8535
Warnings : some talk about sexy things (wizard version of truth or dare involved, what did you expect ?;) )
A/N : here you go, a really long one-shot just for you ! Also, I wanted to say that the name of the game wasn't my idea, I saw it somewhere (probably here on tumblr in another one-shot) and thought it was really clever so I borrowed it ! Anyway, as per usual English isn't my first language (French is) so mistakes can be present.
Enjoy !
Sitting across your bed, one leg dangling from the edge, you were currently painting your nails a soft pink as you tried to hold your old cellphone between your shoulder and your ear, listening to Lily finishing to pack her stuff for your trip. As she wondered if two boxes of matches were going to be enough for the no-magic getaway, a sudden thought came back to you.
"Oh, by the way, Lil' ! Do you have a spare sleeping bag for me? I think a hippogriff had a go at mine, or maybe it was just my cat," you paused."Yeah, it was probably my cat."
The voice on the other hand of the phone gave a laugh. "Sure, I think I still have my old one somewhere. Do you need anything else, apart from the tent I mean ?"
"No, it's alright, I checked and my camping stove still works," you answered. "Also, I went out today and bought half of the store marshmallow supplies so we're all set."
"Great ! I just hope the boys won't forget their things tomorrow," she said as you heard her rummage through her things.
You scoffed. "Honestly, do you even know them ? I'll be surprised if James didn't forget the frickin' tents !"
"You're right, I shouldn't set my expectations too high or he's going to lower them for me."
You chuckled at her clear exasperation towards the boy who had become her boyfriend a few weeks ago after a lot of pining and trying from his part.
"Alright, well I should go, Lil'. I'll see you tomorrow," you said while stifling a yawn.
Lily bid you goodnight before you both hang up. You yawned once more and made your way to your desk to check your bag one last time before going to bed.
All the preparations were for the upcoming camping trip Lily had suggested you went on together during the summer holidays. She had first spoke of it a few days before your sixth year at Hogwarts had ended, and you had quickly agreed but when James heard of it, he insisted that the two of you didn't go on your own – or rather that Lily didn't - which had annoyed his girlfriend to no end, telling him to stop being an overprotective twat. In the end and after James had apologized, Lily had agreed for him to come with the both of you but on the condition that Remus Lupin would come too to help her keep her sanity. You were confident she had also done it so you wouldn't feel like a third-wheel beside them and you were grateful for it too as watching James make googly eyes at Lily during the whole trip wasn't something you looked forward to. But soon after Remus had been invited, the last addition to the group came in the form of Sirius Black ; you didn't know why you hadn't thought right away that James and Sirius would be a package deal since they seemed to be joined at the hip and the boy basically lived with the Potters during the holidays because of some family issues you were vaguely aware of.
Anyway, you were still hopeful that you would have a great time with your friends despite the fact that the infuriating and attractive boy you had a reluctant crush on was going to be there too. With that thought, you closed your bag again and turned off the light in the room before slipping under the covers of your bed to get a good night's sleep. Merlin knew you would need your energy.
"Alright, everyone give me your wands."
You took yours out of the waistband of your pants and put it in Lily's open hand as Remus did the same next to you but when James' and Sirius' turn came, things didn't go as easily.
"Come on, Lily Flower, is this really necessary ?" whined James.
"Yes, it is."
The determination in the girl's voice left him no choice and he gave up, giving her his mahogany wand. Sirius soon followed after his best mate and turned towards you, acknowledging you for the first time today by winking in your direction. You rolled your eyes, unimpressed.
Lily put all the wands away in the large bag on her back – at least they would have them in case an emergency came up - before starting to walk forward on the little path that disappeared between the trees ahead of them. "Come on, it's not far from here, just a five-minutes walk."
You stayed at the back with Remus and, unfortunately, Sirius as James started after his girlfriend who was already a good ten-yard away and started talking quietly with her when he caught up so that the others couldn't hear them.
"Did you get it out of his bag ?"
James smirked arrogantly. "Of course I did, who do you take me for ?"
"Wipe that smirk off your face or I'll do it for you, Potter," she shot back.
"I wouldn't mind if you did, Evans."
Lily gave him a glare. "Remind me why I agreed for you to be my boyfriend again ?"
"Because you've secretly always loved me, Lilypad," he offered, making her pull a face. "But anyway, what's with the matchmaking ? I didn't take you for the type to get involved in that type of thing ? Although you never cease to surprise and amaze me."
Lily rolled her eyes but caught the gleam of sincerity in her boyfriend's eyes and relaxed as she got a little closer to him to brush his arm while they walked. "I just think they should do something about it ! She's going in circles talking about him all day and then feeling guilty and mad about it. It's almost as painful to watch as when you were trying to get a date with me," she huffed as James put on a fake hurt look on. "And Sirius hasn't even tried to get in her pants yet, if that doesn't mean there's something going on with him too, then I don't know what's happening anymore !"
"Oh trust me, Padfoot's got it bad too, he's not looked at a single girl but her for like two weeks. That's never happened before !"
"Well, if everything goes well, we shouldn't have to worry about them anymore afterwards," Lily concluded with a self-satisfied smile.
James gave her a side-look. "I really like it, you know, when you start scheming behind people's back like that. Maybe you could be a useful associate in some of my future pranks ?"
She gave him a warning glance but slid her fingers between his own anyway.
Behind them, their friends were already arguing. Well, you and Sirius were, Remus was just trying not to get involved in the matter altogether. Very clever of him.
You couldn't believe it, it had been less than two minutes and you were already bickering about the stupidest thing imaginable. Why was Sirius so adamant to persuade you that he could light a fire the muggle way, without the help of the Incendio spell ? And why couldn't you just let it go instead of taunting him ? Well, maybe you had the answer to that one ; his grey eyes did seem even more piercing and hypnotizing than usual, shining with passion as he was being overly dramatic once again.
A few more minutes passed by before you finally huffed at Sirius and slowed down briefly to walk with Remus who was just behind you. You both began to walk slower as to put a little distance between you and Sirius.
"I don't know who's the worst between you two," he finally greeted you.
You scoffed. "Thanks Remus, and here I was, thinking you would have my back."
"Normally, I would. But you keep making his behaviour worse than it already is, it's quite exhausting."
"I'm not doing anything ! He's the one who started bragging about his 'survival skills' !" you shot back. "As if he had ever needed 'survival skills' anyway."
"You'd be surprised Y/N," the boy laughed quietly. "He can be pretty resourceful when he puts his mind to it."
"Must not be often then," you said as the trees began to look more scattered around you.
Obviously, Remus knew answering wouldn't lead him anywhere and so he just shook his head lightly. With a bit of luck, he wouldn't have to hear their constant bickering after the end of the trip.
"We're here !" Lily exclaimed when you and Remus had joined the three others in a small clearing. "Let's unpack, alright ?"
You heard a groan coming from your right. "I'm hungry Lily, can't we put up a fire and eat something before ?"
"Yeah, I'd like to see him use matches in real life too," you added, earning a glare from Lily.
"Both of you, stop," she said sternly. "Sirius, we're not going to eat before all the tents are set, so that's one more reason for you to get a move on."
"What were the other ones ?"
"That would be her kicking your arse if you don't, Padfoot," James intervened. His girlfriend looked very impressed and smiled briefly at him before she confirmed what he had just said.
Sirius sighed before dropping the bag James had lent him on the ground. "Should have known you were going to betray me for her, Prongs."
Fortunately, that was the end of the argument and Lily opened her own bag, taking out her wand. "Last use of magic," she said. "Sirius, Remus give me your tents."
Remus took his miniature tent out and placed it next to the two Lily had brought herself, as they waited for Sirius to do the same.
The dark-haired boy had now his whole arm in the bag and a frown on his face. "I can't find it."
Everyone scrunched up their eybrows. "What do you mean ? Did you put it in the bag when I gave it to you last night ?" James asked.
"Yes, Prongs," Sirius huffed, "I put the tent in the bag."
"Move, Sirius," Lily suddenly said.
He did as he was told – surprisingly – and the girl casted the Accio spell but nothing happened. She tried again without any more success. "Well, it's not there."
"Great," Sirius sighed and ran his hand across his face.
Lily gave a look to James who started speaking as soon as she did. "Well, Lily brought her parents' tent for Y/N, you could always share it, there's enough room for the both of you."
"No way !"
"Well, thank you, I didn't know I was so off-putting," Sirius replied to your very clear refusal.
You ignored him. "There's no way I'm sleeping with him !" You saw the boy in question start to smirk at the ambiguity of your words. "You, don't even try."
"Come on Y/N, it's just one night," Lily reasonned. "Where is he going to sleep otherwise ?"
"I don't know, outside ?" you offered, forcing James and Remus to contain a laugh which earned them a glare from Sirius. "Or I could swap tents with Remus ?"
James snorted. "Please, have you seen him ? He's basically a half-giant, he's going to squash and smother him in his sleep, no offense mate."
"None taken," replied Remus with a small smile on his lips.
"And if it was anyone else, like me or Rem', you wouldn't be so difficult, would you ?" asked Lily.
You had the strangest impression, as if you were the only one on your side and everyone else wanted you to share that damned tent. Even Sirius didn't look too bothered by it when he was supposed to hate your guts as much as you hated his. Well, maybe that was the problem ; did you really hate him that much ? But if it wasn't the case, then that meant the excuse you had found for yourself wasn't good enough anymore and you would have to confront the issue that truly made you want to avoid sleeping next to him and you didn't want to do that. At all. So you went back to the 'pretend hate' option.
"But that's different, Lily ! I just... I can't !"
That's when Remus took a step forward and started going at it too and you knew right away that everything was lost. "Please, Y/N, I'm aware that Sirius can be... a lot to manage, but can you make an effort just for tonight ? You will only be sleeping in there anyway and I'm sure he will be on his best behaviour," he finished with a pointed look towards his friend.
And sure enough, everything was lost. You sighed ; how did he do it, seriously ? Making you feel bad but at the same time being the most supportive out of everyone ? You couldn't even find arguments anymore !
"I guess I can try to tolerate him," you finally gave in.
"Great ! Now we can actually start to set up the tents !" Lily exclaimed, losing no time to use the Engorgement Charm on said tents.
As you passed by Sirius with yours in hand, you caught his gaze as he opened his mouth. "Thanks."
"I'd say you're welcome but you know I wouldn't really mean it," you replied.
"Wouldn't expect anything else from you," he said, a smirk on his lips as he started to help with the tent.
Everything was going surprisingly well, making you think that maybe this arrangement wouldn't be as terrible as you first thought. Or that Sirius was up to something. But you decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and took advantage of the rare peacefulness around you as everyone was finishing their work on the tents. After a few minutes, Lily sent James to start looking for firewood while she placed their sleeping bags down and Remus joined him not long after. As you were also finishing your work, you saw them come back and chat while balancing a load of kindling and branches in their arms.
James let the wood fall in the fire pit his girlfriend had started building with rocks she had found around the camp and began to rub his hands. "Alright, time to get the fire going. Padfoot, would you care to join me ?"
Sirius immediately leaped to his feet, leaving you to deal with the sleeping bags, and strode towards his friend. "Shall I do the honours ?"
"Go ahead, mate, show them how we do it in the Potter family."
You looked up towards the two boys and caught Sirius' surprised expression at James' words which, you had to admit, had been one of the sweetest thing you had ever seen or heard. You saw the first boy lick his lips – obviously still stunned by James' natural acceptance of him as a true brother - before going back to the task at end and taking a match out of the box he had been given.
He struck it and hold it next to some of the twigs in the fire pit which ignited quickly. But, as Sirius' mouth was already forming the beginning of a smirk, the small sparkes stopped their progression and died out. Now, it was your turn to gloat.
He tried a second time, then a third time and as he was taking a fourth match out, James finally spoke up. "Maybe I can try, Pad ?"
Sirius handed him the box with a scowl and James placed some more twigs in front of him before striking his first match. He lasted three tries before Lily slipped between both boys and took them from his hand. "Give me that. You're embarrassing yourselves."
You bit back a laugh but both boys glared at you anyway. "Stop laughing, you couldn't do better than us if you tried!" Sirius exclaimed, sulking. You arched an eyebrow and made your way to the fire pit to help Lily arrange the wood to make it look like a small teepee.
The boys' gazes followed every last movement you or Lily made, and their confusion and curiosity at what you were both doing quickly turned into disbelief as you lit the twigs in several places and the flames began to take hold. You saw a smile tugging at the corner of Remus' lips as he crossed his arms and enjoyed the show his two dumbstruck friends were putting on.
"And that boys, is how you build a fire," you announced as said fire began to crackle next to you and Lily.
She walked to her boyfriend's side – who was still looking shell-shocked at the moment – and gave him a peck on the cheek with a very smug look etched on her face. You started back towards your tent to take some stuff out of your bag but couldn't resist taunting the other boy who was standing there, looking as at loss for words as James.
"Next time you brag about something, make sure you actually have what it takes, Black," you said in a low voice as you passed him by and pressed the matchbox against his chest.
***
"Veritaserum or Felix Felicis, anyone ?"
You scoffed. "Come on, what are we ? First years ?
"Of course not, that's why we're playing the grown-up version," James smirked. "If the two people before you already took Veritaserum, then you have to do the dare and the questions are definetly not for first years."
"I'm in !" declared Lily to whom you threw a quizzical look. She just shrugged while Sirius and Remus agreed to play as well, though the second one of the two looked more reluctant to do so.
You sighed and straightened up. "I guess I'll play too."
"That's the spirit !" James exclaimed, rubbing his hands together with mischief in his eyes. "And since you're making so much efforts tonight, you can ask first."
"Okay then. James, Veritaserum or Felix Felicis ?" you said losing no time.
"Veritaserum."
"Afraid, are we ?" you teased him. "Alright, do you like to be told what to do in bed or do you prefer to be the one in control ?"
You enjoyed watching Lily's face go completely pink at your question as Remus lifted an eyebrow at you. But as far as you could see, James wasn't disconcerted in the least.
"Starting right away, Y/N ? I like that," he said with an approving look. He took a few seconds to think before answering. "I definitely wouldn't be against the other person taking charge."
You saw Lily steal a glance at her boyfriend before staring once again at the fire, a light blush still on her cheeks. It was truly incredible how much more frequently her skin appeared to colour itself since she had finally agreed to go on that date with him.
Next one to go was Remus and you were all surprised to learn that, unlike James, the quiet boy's favorite fantasy was to be the dominant one. The few sips of firewhisky must have helped to loosen his tongue you thought as he turned to Sirius on his left.
"Sorry, you have to take the dare, Padfoot," he said and Sirius nodded. "I dare you to keep your hand on the thigh of the person to your left until your next turn."
You immediately glared at Remus ; you were the person to Sirius' left.
The dark-haired boy gave you an unusual unsure look as you took a deep breath and sighed. "Come on, Black, get on with it." He edged closer to your side and put his hand on your leg, though he tried to be a gentleman about it and kept it nearer to your knee. You gulped ; the next round wasn't going to be an easy one.
Sirius was having a bit of trouble concentrating too as he asked Lily if she had ever taken a sexy picture of herself. James almost choked on his own saliva when she revealed that she had, in fact, already done so and you bit your lip to keep from laughing out loud at his expression.
"Y/N, your turn," Lily quickly changed the subject. "Have you ever had a wet dream about someone here ?"
Oh no, she didn't. She already knew the answer ! You had reluctantly talked about it with her just a few weeks ago as you were about to go crazy and also to have some kind of an outside perspective on the matter.
"Yes," you nodded while trying not to die from the embarrassment.
"Really ? Who was it ?" you heard Sirius say. "Remus ? James ? Lily ?"
You stayed silent and tried to find something to say that would get him off your back but he kept going." Was it me ?"
"I'm not telling, alright ?" you snapped unintentionally, instantly regretting it.
"Ooh, that's definitely me ! I'm flattered Y/N," Sirius smirked and winked.
You wished the ground could have swallowed you whole right at that moment ; Merlin, you were never going to hear the end of it now and it's not like you could have controlled it anyway ! Sirius wasn't stupid either ; you wouldn't be surprised if he figured out what this meant, that the whole hate thing maybe wasn't coming straight out of nowhere but was a barrier you had built between you and him so you wouldn't be another one of the tens of girls that were infatuated with him.
You had to create a diversion or you were going to have a panic attack soon, especially if he kept purposefully brushing your leg in circles with his thumb. " Lily ! I think it's Felix Felicis for you," you blurted out.
"What ? No ! You can't ask me, I just asked you !"
"Actually, there's no rule against it," intervened Remus, earning himself a glare from Lily and a grateful look from you.
"I dare you to take off your shirt and show us what colour of underwear you're wearing," you said smugly. You too had learned some interesting information while on the phone last night, like the fact that Lily wanted to put something nice on, just in case, and that she had gathered James liked dark green on her.
You could almost see green flashing lights leaving her eyes and thanked Merlin that she didn't have her wand right now. Oh, how sweet revenge was.
She reluctantly grabbed the back of her T-shirt, pulled it over her head and, sure enough, revealed an emerauld green bra.
"Well, someone's getting lucky tonight, huh Prongs ?" said Sirius, smirking at his friend who seemed currently unable to take his eyes of his girlfriend.
"You do know it's rude to stare, James ?" you added, pleased with yourself.
That seemed to wake him up as he blinked before turning his gaze away from the green lace. "Yeah, yeah, sorry Lily."
"It's alright," she replied, putting her top back on and brushing her hair out of her face as she kept glancing at the boy. You had to admit, despite Lily's first reluctance to be with James, they now formed a pretty cute couple.
A few seconds passed in silence before you spoke up. "Can we do something else ? Like telling creepy stories or something ?" You felt like everybody had had their share of awkwardness for the night.
"Alright, but first I think I earned the right to ask one more person," said Lily.
You hesitated but finally nodded ; your dare had been quite embarrassing after all. "Sirius, Veritaserum or Felix Felicis ?"
"Felix Felicis," he replied, making you frown.
"Very brave of you," she answered and began to think. "You have to let us blindfold you and we're all going to kiss you on the cheek before you decide who you want to kiss on the lips, okay ?"
He shrugged. "Fine by me."
Lily immediately grabbed some kind of towel and blindfolded Sirius before taking a step back. "Everyone stand up and line up," she instructed and you all did as she told. "Alright, we can start."
First came James, then Lily followed and next it was your turn. You took walked towards Sirius and pecked his cheek quickly, then took a step back and lingered for a few seconds before going back in line. Remus joined you after his turn and you waited as Sirius put on a show of deliberating who he was going to kiss back. You were pulling at the lower hem of your shirt when he finally decided.
"The very lucky winner of this contest is, drumrolls please," he paused and James began to beat his hands on a random log. "Thank you. As I was saying, the very lucky winner of this contest is... kisser n°3 !"
You lifted your gaze from your shirt and gaped a little at him before pulling yourself together – well, as much as you could – and taking a step aside to walk once again in Sirius' direction. You arrived in front of him far too quickly for your taste but couldn't do anything about it since he was already talking. "Lily ! Can I take off whatever you blindfolded me with ? I'd like to actually see who I'm kissing !"
"Sure !"
His hands went behind his head before the towel dropped from his eyes so that his grey irises were now discernible in the soft campfire light. He took you in before smiling softly. "Lucky you, you must be delighted."
"Yeah," you breathed out before remembering you were supposed to hate him. "I feel like I've just won the muggle lottery."
But despite the sarcastic voice in which those words had been spoken and your every intention to resent the boy in front of you, you were almost sure that your eyes were betraying you as you couldn't stop your brain from thinking that you actually felt like you had won the lottery.
"Let's get this over with, Black," you added when he just kept looking at you with that infuriating smirk of his.
"Your wish is my command," Sirius replied in a smug voice.
He briefly dropped his gaze and took a step forward, closing the gap between the two of you and bringing you almost chest to chest. You couldn't hear anything behind you which made you wonder if the others were just staring at you as you were about to kiss your nemesis but that thought was put on hold the moment Sirius' eyes found yours again ; his grey irises were set on your (Y/E/C) ones from beneath his lashes and looked particularly mesmerizing at the moment. You felt as if someone had casted a Petrificus Totalus on your whole body as you remained frozen when he delicately placed his hands on each side of your face and began to close the distance between you and him. Merlin, if your erratic heartbeat was anything to base yourself on, then you would definitely need to find a new lie to tell yourself after that.
Sirius' lips were only a few inches away from yours when he seemed to pause and you were about to say something but before you could, his eyes suddenly dropped to your mouth and he finally kissed you.
You closed your eyes once the initial shock caused by his sudden move had passed as the muscles in your body began to slightly relax after a few seconds ; this allowed you to better concentrate on the exquisite feeling that was Sirius' soft lips pushed against your own and his warm hands against your skin. The fact that you were clearly breaking a rule – even though it was one you had made for yourself – just made the whole thing even more exciting. Right at this moment, you knew you had failed ; you were now part of the 'I-have-a-crush-on-Sirius-Black' already very large club. But at least you had tried to go against it, you really had, it just hadn't worked out.
You were about to finally go with it and start to kiss him back but he leaned back at the last moment and put some space between the both of you once again. "There, it's over. Wasn't so bad, now, was it ?"
You nodded, feeling disconcerted and quite honestly a little idiotic too now that the moment had passed. You clenched your jaw, annoyed that you had basicaly thrown everything out the window as soon as the boy had given you a small kiss, a kiss that was part of a dare to make things worse.
"Should we start on those creepy stories, then ?" you said, completely changing the subject and plopping down on the ground next to the fire once again.
You had been staring at the tent flap for a while when you heard the zipper being opened and closed again in your feet's general direction. You curled up in the warmth of your sleeping bag and closed your eyes, pretending to be asleep. The idea of speaking to Sirius wasn't the most appealing right at the moment as you were still unsure of the course to take on now that you weren't in a comfortable state of denial anymore.
You heard him move around a little before he layed down and silence returned, only interrupted by both of your breathings and the low, quiet voices of Remus and James coming from outside from time to time.
Once several scary stories had been exchanged around the fire – some of which had actually been creepy and, most importantly, new to you – and Lily had taught James and Sirius how to make smore's, you had been the first one to go back to your tent to sleep. Lily had done so as well not very long after since you had heard her saying 'goodnight' to everyone what must have been ten minutes later. And now, it seemed Sirius had finally decided to go to bed too.
It wasn't too long before you started to drift off to the sound of the boy's deep breathing and soon you were completely asleep. You didn't sleep for long though, as you woke up not even two hours later according to the watch you had pulled out of your bag. You yawned before turning on your side to try and get back to sleep as it was still the middle of the night but opened your eyes once again when you heard noise outside your tent. Listening closely, you thought you heard something close to footsteps and frowned. As you sat up in your sleeping bag, the noise came again first in the forms of three footsteps on Sirius' side of the tent and then a second time as whoever or whateveer was walking outside moved to your side. You were about to dismiss it as being a fox or some other animal of the countryside when heavy breathing suddenly started to resonate next to you and made it impossible to do so.
You gulped and debated what to do as goosebumps erupted on your arms, becoming more and more creeped out by the second. If only you had your wand ! At least you would be able to react to anything that could possibly be outside right now ! But since you didn't have it at arm's reach at the moment, you turned to your left side, vaguely discerning Sirius' asleep form in the darkness, and decided to wake him up. At least you wouldn't be the only scared one that way.
"Sirius !" you whisper-shouted. "Sirius, wake up !"
But the only answer you got was his soft snores echoing in the silence of the night. The heavy breathing picked up again and this time you gripped Sirius' arm and shook it while whispering his name more sharply. After a few seconds, you finally heard him groan and as he began to ask you what was going on, you hushed him and made a sign towards the flap of the tent. The footsteps started again and you turned your eyes towards Sirius who was now frowning too.
"That could just be a deer or something, Y/N," he finally whispered to you though you could see he took little comfort from his own statement.
You shook your head, even though he probably couldn't tell. "That is not a deer, listen to it." And this time the thing started loudly sniffing the air before suddenly taking the final steps that brought it right in front of the tent's entrance and panting once again.
Before you could think about it, you moved back and unconsciously leaned into Sirius' side as your eyes glued themselves to the front flap. Your were thinking about explanation after explanation and starting to tear up while trying to calm your breathing and stop being ridiculous at the same time when the zipper suddenly opened and the thing that had been outside jumped into the tent.
You screamed higher than you thought was possible and started kicking whatever it was with your feet – you weren't going down without a fight ! - when a loud barking laugh boomed next to you, soon followed by a second one.
"Y/N stop, it's me, James !" you heard the thing in front of you say in between laughs.
You focused on the dark form for a second and soon caught sight of the glasses that undoubtedly belonged to James Potter. You started to understand what had just happened and clenched your jaw as your face became hotter and hotter until you finally exploded.
"What the hell is wrong with you ?! I almost had a heart attack here !" you yelled at him before turning to Sirius. "And you ! You knew about it, didn't you ? I can't believe you, you're such a prat !"
"Merlin, that was amazing ! Your face, Y/N, you should have seen your face !" laughed Sirius.
You gripped the fabric of your sleeping bag to the point where your knuckles were almost white before replying. "Stop laughing, it's not funny !" But it didn't stop them, if anything it just added to their current exhilaration and so you slipped out of the sleeping bag and exited the tent with a 'Fuck both of you'.
When you stood up, you could see Lily rubbing her eyes and walking towards you as Remus poked his head out of his tent, a mop of messy brown hair adorning it. "What's going on ? I heard someone scream," she asked and then frowned at your expression. "Are you alright ?"
"What's going on is that your boyfriend's an arsehole and Sirius is an even bigger one !" you snapped at her, passing next to her without stopping. You knew she had nothing to do with it and didn't deserve to be yelled at but you were having a hard time controlling yourself at the moment. You just kept walking until you found a large tree you could sit against and that was far away enough from the two idiots back at the camp.
While you were trying to calm down on your own, Lily's turn to scream at the boys had come. She was not pleased with their idea of a prank and once she had sent Sirius to look for you – 'you are going to go apologize now before I curse you with your own wand' – she turned to her boyfriend.
"Why did you do that ? You've just ruined all the work we did tonight ! Now, we'll be lucky enough if she doesn't murder him on the spot when he finds her !" she said, shacking her head very disapprovingly. "Merlin, James, sometimes you behave like a five year old."
"I'm sorry, Lily, we didn't think she would take it so seriously," he tried to explain.
Lily rolled her eyes. "That's not a real apology if you put the blame on her reaction, James."
He sighed and passed a hand on the back of his neck. "You're right. I'll go apologize to her now."
But Lily grabbed his arm and stopped him right where he was. "You can do it in the morning. Let Sirius talk to her for now, she looked angrier with him than with you for some reason." Her boyfriend nodded and they both walked back to their tent.
You had your back against the trunk of the oak above you and your arms around your knees when you heard a branch snap to your right. "It's me, Sirius."
You rolled your eyes. "Leave me alone."
"I want to talk to you," he insisted.
"Well, I don't want to. Goodnight," you shot back.
You heard him stop in his tracks and silence returned for a few seconds before his voice rose in the night once again. "I'm sorry, Y/N. Really. We didn't mean to scare you that much."
You scoffed. "What ? You didn't think it would be scary to wake up in the middle of the night to someone walking around the tent and panting right next to my frickin' ear ?"
"You just seemed to enjoy the scary stories earlier, so we thought it would be funny to creep you out a bit," he said.
"I like hearing them, not living one of them Sirius ! I was already tearing up at that one Remus told for Merlin's sake !" you exclaimed, turning your head in his direction. The light of the crescent moon allowed you to see that he was just a few feet next to you. "You knew I was scared, you even pretended to be as well for a moment and then I felt so stupid when you started laughing at me !"
"I'm sorry," he repeated, a little more softly than before, "I never wanted to make you feel stupid." You looked in the opposite direction of him, and waited for the remaining traces of your fear and shame to leave your eyes. You heard him take a few more steps and when you turned your head again, he was already crouched in front of you. You were surprised to find him suddenly that close to you and couldn't take your eyes of his as his expression became gentler than you had ever seen on him.
"Is there something I can say to make you forgive me ?"
"No," you began and saw his face drop a little which, for some obscure reason, made you quickly continue, "I mean you've already said that you were sorry and I know you meant it as a joke."
"But it wasn't a funny one though, was it ?"
"Not from my perspective, no. But maybe the horror movie I watched last week is to blame a bit too," you added.
He suddenly seemed amused by your answer, a small smile playing on his lips. "What was it about ?"
"Bigfoot. And there was this couple, they were in a tent too and it was basically the same thing with the noises and everything, except, you know, it truly was Bigfoot."
"You thought we were being attacked by Bigfoot ? Doesn't he exist only in the US though ?" he said, clearly trying not to laugh again.
"Shut up,'" you mumbled and he shook his head a little.
"Why do keep listening to horror stories and watching movies if they scare you that much ?"
You shrugged. "I don't really know, honestly. I guess I just don't know what's good for me and what's not."
He smiled at you once more and you both stayed silent for a moment before he stood back up again and extended a hand in front of you. "What do you say we go back to sleep ? I promise I'll protect you if the British version of Bigfoot tries anything."
You were tempted to answer something smart too but finally decided against it, eager to slip back into your warm sleeping bag and so you took his offered hand and let him pull you upwards. "Sure."
Next morning, you woke up to the sound of raindrops hitting the fabric of your tent as you began to rub your eyes and turned around in your sleeping bag. You came almost face to face with a mess of dark locks and spotted Sirius' relaxed face underneath them ; your hand seemed to have its own mind as it brushed part of his hair back before coming back down to rest on your arm.
You kept looking at him until you were fully awake, enjoying the peaceful athmosphere of the rainy morning. After checking the time – almost 10 AM – you shifted on your back again and watched the different raindrops racing down the tent flap above you for a moment until you heard Sirius begin to move next to you. You threw a look in his direction, seeing him stretch and stifle a yawn before turning his eyes towards you.
"Good morning," he said, still half-asleep. You greeted him back and you both fell back into a comfortable silence ; you were starting to wonder if he had gone back to sleep when he asked what the time was.
"10 AM. I think the others are still asleep," you added. "Or in their tents at least."
"Yeah, probably," he replied after noticing the sound of the rainy weather outside and pulling up his sleeping bag a bit more.
You wanted to steal a look towards him but decided not to and started rummaging into your backpack until you found the plastic jar you were looking for. "Do you want hot chocolate ?"
Sirius opened his eyes again to give you a quizzical look. "Um, yeah ?"
You grabbed the camping stove you had already used a few times, assembled it and opened the tent flap before putting on the gas and filling a small pot with water from your bottle. You caught a glimpse of Sirius sitting up in the corner of your eye as the water heated. He watched you fill two cups once the water was hot enough and pour cocoa and milk powder into them before handing one to him.
He took a sip before speaking. "I can't believe you've brought a whole kit to make hot cocoa."
"Yeah, well I don't see you complaining either !"
He shook his head with a smile before taking another sip of the delicious beverage.
"Are you aware that you snore when you're sleeping ?" you teased after a few seconds of silence.
Sirius frowned. "I do not !"
"Believe me, you really do ! It's kind of cute though," you shrugged, biting your lip.
"How can snoring be cute ? And I maintain that I don't snore."
You shot him a smug look before replying. "Well, it's not the snoring of an 80-year-old to begin with, it's almost like purring sometimes."
"That's even worse !" he exclaimed, clearly offended. "I'm not a cat !"
You laughed at his outburst and kept drinking your cocoa as he sulked for a moment. He soon finished his own cup and dropped his scowl to stare at you with a thoughtful look in his grey eyes. You quickly became self-conscious and put a strand of hair behind your ear. "What ? Do I have chocolate on my face ?"
"No, I just want to ask you something," he answered.
"Sure, go ahead."
"Do you really have something against me ?" he asked and your stomach knotted.
You weren't sure what to say to him : you knew the answer was 'no' but did you want him to know it too ? Now was the moment to make things change if you wanted them to.
You took a deep breath. "No, not really."
"Then why did you make it seem like you did ?" he shot back without losing any time.
"Because everybody's already at your feet and I didn't want to be just another member of your fanclub."
He frowned and tilted his head slightly on the side. "First, nobody is 'at my feet' and secondly, if I got all that correctly, you don't hate me but you would like to, is that it ?"
"No, not anymore at least," you replied unsurely.
He licked his lips. "I'm having a hard time understanding everything right now, but at least I know you don't actually hate me, so that's progress," he said. "Now, there's something else I want to say."
You nodded, praying that it wasn't going to be something else about your complicated feelings towards him.
"Last night, when we were playing Veritaserum or Felix Felicis, I knew you were the third person who kissed me."
It took a few seconds but when you finally understood what it meant – that he had picked you on purpose to be the person he had to kiss – your heartbeat accelerated instantly.
"Yeah well, I was the logical choice, wasn't I ? Lily and James are together and maybe it was easier for you to kiss me than Remus," you tried to reason.
A smile appeared at the corner of his lips. "Trust me, I wouldn't have minded giving him a kiss, or James for that matter. I just chose you, Y/N."
"Why ?"
"Well, because I wanted to kiss you," he said, making you fight not to blush. "You, on the other hand, didn't seem to be entirely on the same page."
You scrunched your eyebrows a little ; that was so far from the truth. "What makes you say that ?"
"The fact that you didn't kiss me back ? That's usually how things works if the other person is also into it," he replied with the beginning of a smirk.
"You didn't leave me the time to do it !"
That seemed to catch his interest as he leaned forward a little, though there was still enough space between the both of you not to make you totally panic. "That means that if I had, you would have done it ?"
"I...maybe," you said, now effectively blushing as you noticed it had stopped raining for a moment already. "Oh look at that, the rain stopped !"
You couldn't have been more grateful for the distraction as you put on your jacket and shoes as fast as you could and left the overwhelming ambiance of the tent to be surrounded by the fresh, clean air of the outside. You had already walked a few yards when you heard wet footsteps behind you and after turning around, you saw Sirius walking towards where you were. That's when an idea suddenly popped up in your mind ; it was very childish and kind of disgusting too but it would be a great revenge against him for last night. And he wouldn't have time to continue asking embarrassing questions.
Sirius, who didn't have any idea of what was about to happen to him, frowned when he saw you bent down and pick something up. Next thing he knew, his dark jacket was stained by a round muddy mark right in the middle of it. He gaped at you, frozen for a moment as he watched you laugh loudly, before he finally pulled himself together and gave you a dangerous look.
"You should run, Y/N, as fast as you can," he said before starting to stride towards you.
You took him up on his advice and picked another handful of mud before beginning to jog as fast as you could without slipping on the wet ground. It wasn't enough though, as he was slowly starting to gain ground on you and so you turned around, aimed and threw your projectile in his direction. It hit him in the shoulder this time, even though he tried to dodge it.
You resumed your running and tried to be a little faster since he hadn't stopped at all when the mud had hit him. The distance between the both of you had almost been restored when your right foot slipped out from under you and you ended your fall on the muddy ground. To make things worse, you heard Sirius' laugh resonate behind you and soon he was by your side, just a few feet away as he taunted you.
"Sorry, but you only got what you deserved for ruining my jacket."
You narrowed your eyes at him. "Oh, I'm going to ruin your jacket alright !" And you awkwardly got to a crouching position before crashing into his legs, making the both of you fall back down.
"I can't believe you've done that, Y/N ! Honestly, look at us, we're covered in mud !" he exclaimed, complete disbelief painted on his face while you laughed harder than you had ever had.
He went on grumbling about the mud that had splattered his hair as you finally stopped laughing and bit your lip instead ; you had just took in your position, him propped up on his elbows and you straddling his thighs and soon, he seemed to do so as well as he stopped arguing.
For a few seconds, your mind went blank with no idea whatsoever of what was going to happen and then one single thing invaded all your thoughts and overwhelmed you ; you suddenly wanted nothing more than to feel his lips against yours once more and to do what you hadn't had the time to do last night. And so you did ; you lifted your hand to his cheek and didn't leave him or yourself any time to think before you closed the gap between you.
Sirius automatically responded to the kiss, though surprised that you initiated it, and relished the feeling of you so close to him. He didn't even care anymore that you were probably putting mud all over his hair as your hands moved to entangle themselves in his dark locks, scrapping the back of his neck with your nails. You didn't mind either, as the only thought that crossed your mind was how good this was and how you wished time could stop to freeze the both of you in that moment.
Finally, you pulled back a little and looked straight at Sirius' eyes once he opened them again.
"Wow," he said, blinking a few times. "That was something."
"It was," you replied with a small smile.
Sirius began to smirk. "So...does that mean you actually like me ?"
"I think I made it kind of obvious, didn't I ?" you said after rolling your eyes.
He shrugged. "Yeah, I just wanted to hear you say it."
Unbeknownst to him, he wasn't the only one to hear it ; a few meters away, Lily and James high-fived and celebrated silently in their tent while Remus sighed with relief. "About bloody time."

Details, part I: “Arabesque” series, contemporary, by Daniel Abel. The surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. On this shore, we’ve learned most of what we know. Recently, we’ve waded a little way out, maybe ankle-deep, and the water seems inviting. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from. We long to return, and we can, because the cosmos is also within us. We’re made of star stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself. —Carl Sagan

Prank War
Pairing : Sirius Black/Reader
Plot : Sirius declared war the moment he chose you to be his next prank's unsuspecting victim. Since then, the both of you have spent your days getting back at the other but one of your prank might just be the one to take things further than you intended...
Word count : 5134
Warnings : little bit of swearing
A/N : I got the inspiration for this one from something that really happened to me during holidays in Greece, though I didn't have Sirius next to me to help me, only my sister who was pretty much useless at the time, but hey, at least some good came out of it ! As usual, English isn't my first language so a few mistakes are bound to be made.
Enjoy !
Sirius Black was one of the most, if not the most prolific prankster Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had ever seen. That was a fact well known by all students and staff alike and so, when he launched himself into a new prank war, it didn't change the school's life one bit. On the other hand, it made yours take a turn and not necessarily a good one.
Indeed, your days – already busy with classes and homework – where now also spent enduring Sirius' pranks and plotting your own in revenge. It had started last week when you had somehow spilled a whole jug of pumpkin juice at breakfast and had gone back to the Gryffindor tower to change robes before class, only to end up looking for the key to your trunk all over the dorm. In the end, you had to go through the entire day in your sticky, damp robes because you couldn't find the damned thing anywhere. It was when you came back in the evening that you found a little note on your bed, written on a piece of parchment.
It was right in front of you the whole time, Y/N.
Below the sentence, a small arrow was pointing down to the quilt on your bed and it took another five minutes for you to understand what it meant. Obviously the person who had written that note was talking about the key you had been looking for, even though you didn't know who that person was, and so you had started to think about how it could be in front of you without seeing it. You had tried a few different ineffective couter-spells for invisibility before casting the Engorgment Charm and sure enough, your key had reappeared where the arrow pointed to. After finally getting out of your uncomfortable robes, you had taken the note in your hand and analysed the handwriting, trying to figure out who had been messing with you.
You mind quickly went to the group of boys who were usually the ones involved in that sort of thing and with a little more thought, you identified the handwriting as Sirius Black's one, which you had had many occasions to see recently as you had been partnered up with him in some classes after he had caused too much trouble alongside his previous partner, James Potter.
As soon as you had figured who the mysterious prankster was, you went to work to execute your revenge and give him a taste of his own medicine. It wouldn't hurt him to be the pranked one for once.
But it soon appeared that your task would be harder than you had thought.
The following day, as he walked into the Great Hall for breakfast, heads immediately turned to look in Sirius' direction, even more so than what was usual. All eyes were on him as you started smirking from your place at the Gryffindor table before quickly dropping your expression.
No ! That's not the way it was supposed to go !
The bloody idiot was parading between the tables, his newly dyed hair adorned with a flower crown that you had not even thought of putting there ! You had believed that touching to his ever perfect hair would be enough for him to leave you alone but apparently, he had found a way to turn it to his advantage and even you couldn't deny that he was somehow rocking what you had seen called "unicorn hair" in a muggle magazine.
You spent the rest of the day sulking, having to listen to every person around you saying how hilarious it was that Sirius was "exploring another side of himself" as he had so cleverly explained to everybody. In addition, the boy himself was throwing you smug looks whenever he was in your vicinity, sometimes even winking at you which only enraged you even more.
Then his second prank came when he replaced the cup at your usual place in the Great Hall with a Nose-Biting Teacup which did exactly what its name said. And that had only been the first part of his prank as you quickly discovered that what you had thought to be a small innocent cake had actually been some sort of hiccup inducing sweet and you hadn't been able to stop its effect until mid-afternoon. The only consolation you had was that this time your revenge had worked a little better, the image of Sirius disgusted face as he had finally understood that getting five vomit flavoured Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans in a row could not be due only to bad luck still playing in your head.
And if you were being honest with yourself, even though the pranks were annoying, you still couldn't help but wait each day to see what he could come up with and then taking some pleasure in thinking how you could get back at him. It was strange really, and even more so since you never directly talked about all of it even when you were working together in class. Instead, a playful and casual atmosphere seemed to have settled between the both of you, mischievous looks and laid-back conversation being the only thing filling the time you spent together.
But the next thing you had decided to execute as pay back was, unbeknownst to you, going to go too far for your new partner in crime.
The idea had come to you after he had taken the regular soap out of the showers to put a Frog Spawn Soap in its place. When the first three frogs had appearead out of nowhere while you were showering, you had jumped at the sudden and unexpected appearance and slipped on the wet ground, quickly falling down and hurting you left wrist in the process. It only added to the long day of exhausting and mostly boring classes you had had that day and your tiredness and pain made the whole thing feel like more than what it really was, truly annoying you for the first time since the beginning of this little prank war between you and Sirius. That's why you had decided right at that moment to go bigger this time and why you were currently heading to the Black Lake with Sirius and Remus Lupin, who you had been properly introduced to by the other boy and had also started to consider as a friend of your own.
The two boys had quickly agreed when you had proposed to go outside to enjoy one of the first warm days of the year, Remus taking his book with him to continue it outside and Sirius going after you enthusiastically.
You talked to the calmer one of the two most of the way, discussing the story he was currently reading as you had recommended it to him in the first place. Soon, the three of you were standing on the lake's shore when Remus suddenly hit his forehead with his hand. "I forgot I had to give back another book to Lily ! I'll be right back !" he said as he was already leaving your side. Well, that was unexpected but it was going to make everything easier for you.
With Remus having left, Sirius was the only one to sit down as you stayed up and took a few steps away from him before starting to take off your robes.
Sirius stared at you with a slighlty confused look, frowning and straightening his back a little at your actions, though you could see he was also curious at what was going on.
"What are you doing Y/N ? I didn't think that was the type of enjoyment you were talking about back there," he said with mischief in his eyes and the beginning of a smirk on his lips.
You rolled your eyes. If only he knew. "Get your mind out of the gutter, Black, I'm just gonna go for a swim. I said I wanted to enjoy the weather now, didn't I ?"
"Yeah, I guess. You do know that water's really cold, though ?"
"Isn't that the point ?" you replied, finally in your swimsuit and already making your way to the water.
You slowly entered the Black Lake that was indeed freezing, all the while taking deep breaths and clenching you teeth ; going in was the hardest part of the plan.
"Alright Y/N ?" you heard him say.
"Yeah, the water's nice," you tried to answer convincingly but you could hear Sirius snort a few feet behind you.
"Looks like it," he smirked at your back.
You smirked back, even though he obviously couldn't tell, and continued to make your way further ahead. After some time, you were finally swimming in the dark waters illuminated by the afternoon sun that was doing absolutely nothing to elevate their temperature. You waited a few more minutes, fighting the cold by swimming as much as you could before finally putting your plan into effect.
You yelped suddenly, immediately getting Sirius' attention though it had been on you the whole time. "What's going on ? Are you alright ?"
"I've got a cramp ! It fuckin' hurts !" you cried while starting to gesticulate in what you hoped looked like panic.
As you kept yelping and seemed more and more distressed, you could see him standing up, throwing aside his own robes and making his way quickly to the water. You were trying to soothe your non-existent cramp, making it look like you were genuinely in a very bad situation, now also starting to swallow and spit out water when Sirius ran into the glacial water, adrenaline pumping through his veins as he saw you struggling and thrashing around, your head going under water a few times. Why did you have to go swim in the bloody lake ?! And so far from the shore too ?!
He was still about 20 yards away when he saw you struggle some more and disappear under the surface, prompting him to yell your name and swim as fast as he could while trying to keep his own panic at bay. After what felt like too much time for his taste, he finally reached the spot where you had been and took a deep breath before diving underneath the dark water. Even with his eyes fully opened he couldn't see much, but thankfully you were only a few feet from the surface and he immediately grabbed your arm and pulled you upwards with him. Breathing heavily, he started to swim back towards the shore with a tight grip on you, determined not to let you go at any moment.
Soon, his feet hit the lake's sandy floor and he scooped you up in his arms to run the rest of the way to the shore, while you were still putting on your act, trying not to be distracted by the feeling of being pressed against his heaving chest. After a short time, you felt your back gently hit the ground and Sirius' presence above you. You discretly took a last breath of air, taking advantage of his still frantic attitude so that he wouldn't notice. You had to keep it up just a little longer for the full effect of your prank to take in.
You shivered as Sirius pressed two fingers to the side of your neck, checking for your pulse which he thankfully and obviously found right away, before feeling him lean down just above your face. He stayed there a few seconds and, since he couldn't feel the breath you were currently holding, you immediately felt his hand under your chin, tilting your head back as he was about to give you mouth-to-mouth. That was the moment.
You suddenly opened your eyes as you took a deep breath in, seeing his distraught face close to yours. "Got you !" you loudly exclaimed, a satisfied grin appearing on your lips even though you were feeling a bit guilty now that you were seeing the look of pure confusion on his features.
"What's going on Y/N ? I don't understand what's happening here," he said and leaned back from above you as you were straightening up to a sitting position yourself.
Your smirk only became more obvious as you let a laugh slip and answered. "You just got pranked, that's what's going on ! You should see your face right now, it's priceless !".
His mouth opened slightly for a few seconds as he took in what you had just told him, before his face suddenly darkened, his jaw clenching and his eyes now resembling a very dangerous and deadly storm. "Are you serious ?!"
You were tempted to be a smart-ass about the very easy and obvious opportunity he had just given you but the look he threw your way at that exact moment dissuaded you very quickly. "I can't believe it ! What the hell were you thinking ?"
Him screaming at you was already getting on your nerves and instead of shutting up like you probably should have done, you felt your blood heat up as you bit back. "Come on, Sirius, it was just a prank ! Relax !"
"Don't tell me to relax Y/N ! What you did wasn't 'just a prank', it was just you being an asshole !" he snapped and you could see a vein popping out on his temple underneath some of his dark, dripping wet hair.
"Oh, I'm the asshole ? Sorry, I thought that position was already taken by you when I slipped and almost broke my arm because of your stupid Frog Spawn Soap !"
Sirius snorted in disbelief and bit his tongue, trying not to say anything he would regret - too much - later despite the current situation. "You know what ? You're right, I'm obviously the one who crossed a line here ! I mean, I should be laughing my arse off right now, shouldn't I ?" he asked with a fake smile. "After all, you just faked you own drowning just to prank me, I should be honoured, really !"
You dropped your gaze to the ground, biting hard on your lip as you felt a weight drop down in your stomach. Sirius was right, you were beginning to see that, but you were too ashamed of the fact that you hadn't thought of anything else but your revenge and that you had been so inconsiderate to reply anything. Right now, you would very much have liked to crawl under a rock away form his rightfully accusing glare.
"Don't you have anything to say ?"
You just wanted him to go, to stop looking so angry and disappointed at you. You were honestly on the verge of tears because of your guilt and frustration at yourself and you hated crying in front of people more than anything else.
"Really ? Nothing?"
"Piss off, Sirius," you finally replied, so softly you weren't sure he would hear you.
He stared at you a bit more before suddenly turning on his feet and striding off the way you had both come from earlier. You frowned, looking at his retreating back. "What are you doing ?"
He answered you without even stopping in his tracks. "Pissing off !"
You didn't say anything this time and watched him disappear behind the hill before sitting down on the shore of the lake, looking at the ripples in the water and focused on keeping the tears in your eyes where they were.
The library was silent, as it would be expected at this hour of the day – or night, rather. You were lying on top of a thick book, your head to the side as you watched your fingers trace the words written in black ink. This had been your occupation for the last hour after you had given up on your homework since it hadn't distracted you enough from your thoughts. Maybe the robes Sirius had forgotten behind at the lake and which were currently stuffed in your bag didn't help either, as you could smell his scent as clearly as if he was sitting in the chair next to you.
You rolled your eyes at your own mind and lifted your head to look outside of the window next to you. The stars had finally appeared since the last time you checked – which you were sure must have been hours ago – and you admired the bright and distant stars that seemed to be winking at you. You looked at the watch on your wrist and stiffled a yawn when you saw it was well-past midnight and almost the first hour of the morning. After putting back the heavy book you had not been reading at all, you checked the corridors outside the library and left the room when you saw that no one seemed to be there at the moment.
As you were carefully making your way back to the Gryffindor tower, you thought of a way to give Sirius his robes back without actually confronting him, at least not right now. Maybe you could give it to Remus and he could do it for you ? Well, first you would have to find him tomorrow, and that was if he wasn't mad at you himself. After all, he had excused himself rather quickly after you had told him what happened when he came back where he thought he would find both of his friends. You sighed at the same time that your stomach began to growl ; in your effort of not running into Sirius for the rest of the day, you had skipped dinner and settled for the few candies you had taken with you that afternoon. Well, you would have to wait till morning because you weren't in the mood to risk getting caught stealing in the kitchen after curfew, not tonight.
When you finally reached your destination, you whispered the password to the Fat Lady who asked you to repeat with a very loud "What's that, dear ?" that made you cringe. You did as she told, this time a little louder and the portrait swung open in front of you, allowing you to enter your Common room. You immediately noticed that you weren't alone as you saw the one person you had been hoping to avoid lying on the couch in front of the fireplace, a book raised in front of him.
You debated for a moment if you should just go up to your dorm, but then you figured that he probably heard the door open and knew you were there ; it wouldn't do any good if he thought you still had the same position about what happened and didn't want to talk to him. So, despite wanting to go to sleep and forget for a few hours the guilt that was still sitting in your stomach, you decided instead to make the first move.
"Hi."
Sirius lowered his book and stared at you before replying. "Hi."
"Umm, you left that back at the lake," you started as you took his robes out of your bag," thought the least I could do was bring it back to you."
You strode towards him, ending in front of the couch and handed them to him. He took them from your hand after putting his book down on his chest and put them on the back of the sofa as you started to wring your hands over and over. When he looked back at you, you bit on your lower lip and dropped your gaze a few seconds before taking a deep breath and clearing your throat.
"Listen, Sirius-"
"Can we talk ?"
You blinked a few times, surprised that you had both chosen the same exact moment to speak.
"You go first," Sirius said as you could see a glint of amusement in his grey eyes though it didn't reach his lips. Shame, his smiles were dazzling.
You wrung your hands some more. "Ok. Well, I wanted to apologize for the stupid prank I pulled this afternoon and for putting you in such a bad situation. Also, I realized I could have hurt you and given you thermal shock or something just because I didn't think about what I was doing, so I'm sorry for that and for calling you an asshole, too."
You inhaled again after your well-rehearsed apology and lifted your eyes to find Sirius shacking his head with a small smile adorning his lips this time, making you frown. "What ? What is it ?"
"First, thank you for all that. Second, you really think that's why I was mad at you ? Because I could have gotten thermal shock ? Or because you called me an asshole ? I mean, that's nothing I haven't been called before and it's kind of true."
You noticed how he had said 'was' and not 'am mad at you' - something that lightened the weight in your stomach a little - and answered a bit more confidently. "Well, I also said I was sorry for being stupid."
"Yeah, I heard and though that is one of the reasons, that's not the main one," he said, straightening up.
"What is it then ?"
The look he gave you next made you gulp ; it was the most intense and serious than you had ever seen him be, even though you admittedly hadn't known him for a particularly long time.
"Thing is, I care about you Y/N and seeing you lying soaking wet on that shore and thinking that you had actually drowned...that was one of the worst feeling I've ever felt, and trust me that's saying something, but it was nothing compared to the fact that I felt completely helpless and useless. I mean, I didn't even know what I was doing and if it was going to help you in any way !" he explained, passing his hand through his dark hair. "And while I'm completely panicking over there, you suddenly shot up and say that it was just a prank and you start laughing, laughing Y/N ! I was just so mad because all of this had been so real, too real for me !"
"I'm sorry, I really am Sirius," you repeated quietly while your body started to tingle unintentionally because of the words and the raw emotion in the boy's voice.
"I know Y/N, I know," he replied, sighing and taking your hand in his to squeeze it before breaking the contact. "Just don't do something like that again. Ever, okay ?"
You nodded, gave him a small smile and started to turn around to head to the girls' dorm's staircase but suddenly felt a sharp pain in your left wrist as Sirius' hand grabbed it to hold you back. You hissed at the unpleasant sensation and he let go of you immediately, asking you if you were alright.
"I told you, I just slipped in the shower," you quickly explained once more.
You saw him bite his lip before he took his legs off the couch and patted the now free seat next to him. "Come on, sit down with me."
You rolled your eyes. "It's not that bad Sirius, really, and I would very much like to be reunited with my bed right now."
"Please ?"
You tried to resist his sad puppy eyes but he seemed to be very good at it - almost strangely so – and so you found yourself next to him in the comfy, old couch in front of the fireplace after only a few seconds of opposition. Really, that was just embarassing.
"I think I owe you an apology too, Y/N," he said as his fingers softly reached for your wrist once more.
You let him but clicked your tongue before answering. "Seriously, it's fine. Nothing that won't go away in a few days and I know you didn't mean to hurt me."
"Still, it happened and that's quite a nasty bruise you got, so will you please let me do my apology ?"
A sigh came past your lips ; you knew there was no way to stop Sirius when he had decided to get his drama queen on.
Apparently he took it as a 'yes' because he picked up where he had left off. "As I was saying before you interrupted me," you rolled your eyes, "I'm sorry that my very well-planned prank wasn't so well-planned after all and that it ended up like that."
When he stopped but didn't continue what you thought was going to be a full, 2 rolls of parchment-worth speech, you slightly cocked your head to the side and watched as he appeared to become almost nervous, licking his lips before quickly glancing at your eyes. As you were about to ask him if everything was alright, he suddenly dropped his gaze and began to lift your wrist between the two of you. You were too confused to do anything and so Sirius went on and soon enough his lips touched the soft skin on the inside of your wrist, caressing the light purple spots that stained it. You blinked, not sure of what was going on but not complaining either.
Next, he moved his attention to the side where the bone protruded and where the pain was incidentally the worst as you sighed in contentment from the warmth his kiss provided to the injury. You bit your lip as he finally detached himself from your skin and looked up at you once again.
"There's another thing I have to apologize for," he started,"I've not been honest with you."
"How so ?" you managed to say, still trying to come to grips with what was happening.
"Remember when you asked me why I chose to prank you in the first place ? And when I answered it had just been something random ?"
You nodded.
"Well, it was not random at all, in fact I had been planning it for a while with Pron- James' help," he explained. "It was the only way I found to get your attention since you hadn't picked up on anything else I had tried."
You frowned. "What do you mean ? What did you do ?"
He chuckled at the confusion etched on your face, almost not believing that you could have been that oblivious but remembering how you hadn't reacted at all at his unusual actions, not even in a negative way like throwing him an annoyed look that would have made things clear enough.
"I can't believe you didn't notice anything Y/N ! Merlin, I think half the bloody school did !" he laughed as a blush coloured your cheeks. "I've been asking for your help in every class where we're at the same desk, brushing your arm or your hand all the time and I've even been to the library with you ! I thought I was being pretty obvious !"
"Yeah, well subtlety doesn't really work with me," you shot back, a little embarrassed that you hadn't noticed anything.
"I can see that," Sirius snorted."Anyway, since it wasn't working I decided to do what I do best, so I pranked you and, hey, look at us, it wasn't such a bad idea, was it ? We're actually here together, talking to each other !"
You couldn't help but smile at his antics ; he was being really sweet at the moment and even though everybody knew he was a charmer, this felt like something else, something more.
Sirius turned completely towards you, getting serious again as you saw his Adam's apple bob once. "Listen Y/N, I like you, like really like you. Truth is I have for a while, I just didn't know what to do about it," he shook his head. "A bit ironic, I know, but that's what it is. So yeah, um... I was hoping you would want to go on a date with me, maybe ?"
Your heart was beating so hard, it was almost impossible to concentrate on what he was saying but as soon as he finished his sentence, your previous smile broadened even more as your chest filled with happiness. "I like you too, Sirius, and I definitely want to go on a date with you. How does Hogsmeade on Saturday sound ?" you proposed, relieving the poor lad for a bit.
"Great. Perfect. I'll wait for you here at 9 a.m," he offered before his gaze dropped to your lips for a few seconds. "One last thing. Can I kiss you ?"
You bit you lip and nodded. Sirius slowly lifted his hand and started to caress your cheek while his eyes were fixed on yours, trying to discern all the different shades of (Y/E/C) melting together in your irises. Your breath caught when his palm moved to the side of your jaw, his fingers brushing the sensitive skin of your neck and sending shivers down your spine.
You parted your lips slightly, trying to get more oxygen to your lungs, and Sirius lowered his gaze to stare at them once more as he started to lean in towards you. You only had time to see him bit his lip in turn before his mouth was on yours, spreading a tingling warmth in your whole body.
The kiss was softer than what you had expected, almost as if he was holding back, trying to take things slow. His hand was still softly stroking the angle of your jaw when yours started to run through his silky dark hair. Honestly, how was it even possible to have hair as soft as his ?
You scrapped your nails lightly at the base of his neck and got a small moan from him in response, making you smile in the middle of the kiss, before doing it again. Sirius tried to deepen the kiss by pushing the tip of his tongue against the edge of your lips but you leaned back before things could go further. Brushing his cheek as he opened his eyes – which you noticed, looked darker than usual – you stood up and intentionally licked your lips to see him gulp.
"Better stop there or we won't have anything to do on Saturday," you smirked.
His irises shone with a gleam of mischief. "I wouldn't worry about that, I've got a creative mind."
"I'm sure you do, Sirius. Goodnight," you said before giving him a peck on the cheek and walking up to your dorm, a smile impossible to wipe off plastered on your face. Never before had the weekend seemed so far away on a Thursday night.
