Something common between Jonathan and the Romanian First Mate is that they both faced the threat of getting devoured by vampires, and choose certain death (climbing down the walls of an enormous castle and cliff, jumping into the ocean in the night).

Jonathan says that the fatal fall will save him, because he will die as a human. The First Mate also says that the sea will save him from Him.

Both of them also tried to kill Dracula while he was seemingly vulnerable, but Jonathan managed to wound him, because it was after sunrise, while the First Mate struck thin air because he found and tried to stab him after sunset.

What can a human do in the face of the unmistakenly supernatural? Someone who is akin to a demon beyond what we believed, the terrifying legends and tales made in flesh?

Well, the captain says to do the best we can while your head holds high, put your faith into the forces beyond heaven, and to keep the wheel steady because you have a duty to fulfill.

As heartbreaking as it is to see the captain alone, without his crew, and defenseless against Dracula, he refuses to become a silent victim of the Count by denying him the control of the Demeter.

God and the Blessed Virgin and the saints help a poor ignorant soul trying to do his duty…

Once again the book repeats, if Dracula as a supernatural evil exists then the powers of heaven that completely oppose him exist too, and that any character can call them for protection, or maybe penance.

So, as much as it pains to see the captain without the protective folklore of Transylvania, he still calls to the holy power which he understands to be all defeating against the evil of the world. By pleading to god and heaven, tying the rosary around the wheel, and binding his hands with a rope, he made sure that Dracula cannot control the Demeter in any way that matters.

The captain pleads to heaven for the Demeter to wreck, to guide into the drifting waters and to get lost in the ocean. If his message is found or not it doesn't really matter, because the captain did his duty, and the sky beyond witnessed it.

guys i think it says something about the aftg fandom that there are so many fucking incredible artists in it - like... I have a theory ok and my theory is kevin and neil

kevin is the DEFINITION of work/obsession. the amount of time and energy and obsession one has to put into their craft at the level of Kevin Day is generally the level of work/obsession that like im a little high rn so I cant recall any off the top of my head - but that's them, okay? the kevin day approach is important here. keep kevin in mind. his brain z not his status, this isnt about status its about him as an artist/person

reverse that. the art is to the artist what exy is to kevin day, you get me?

and then you have the other artists, the rabid ones! the neil jostens, yeah? the ones that *WHEN* they have their art, then sink their teeth into it like a feral animal. but like... they also do that with every other passion they have - and then we get the WEIRD shit, because just because they have their teeth in something else doesnt mean they've let their claws out of their art. they just might also making out with andrew idk you get me?

which MEANS that you get BOTH kinds of artists in the same space with the same fucked up characters because when an artist picks up aftg, they'll see their obsession reflected in either kevin or neil (because listn no one gets that good at anything by 25 without being fucking obsessed in some way shape or form) and will be instantly hooked!

(in my experience with artists, not being one myself -very much wish yes but I gave up when my wrists started to hurt ^^; in.. 6th grade... im. more like... an artist enthusiast..? idk)

Hi there Neil, it's been a little while, did you miss me?

November 30th 2024 i teased an animatic and then gave zero news about it. Guess what!

Also I tried something less linear and a bit more concepual, where Neil and Nathaniel are their own very distinct entities. It made sense in my head.
