What other methods to find job are available besides Jobstreet?
Are there any other methods to find jobs aside from online job portals such as Jobstreet, Jobstock and Starjobs?
Of course there are. Most of the jobs are not even advertised in online job portals. So what are these methods?
Tumblr media
1.    Company’s own website
Huge companies such as Shell, Petronas, Sarawak Energy and Telekom do not engage the service of online job portals. They advertise the positions in their own websites from time to time. This makes it difficult for job seekers because they need to individually logon to these websites on a regular basis to check for vacancy and apply.
However, only by doing so, one can enter these big companies and secure a more stable job. So, if you are serious in searching for jobs, go to each of these company’s websites, sign up and log on regularly to apply for a job.
Tumblr media
2.    Government Linked Companies
Companies such as Sarawak Tourism Board, Kuching Water Board and Kuching Port Authority, Sarawak Foundation and Sarawak Forestry mostly do not advertise through online job portals.
They either advertise available vacancies through their own website, in the newspapers or only internally. So, to cover all possible bases, it is best to monitor all avenues for vacancies. Try to connect with personals in the HR departments of these companies.
Tumblr media
3.    Internal connection/networking
In fact, this is the best method to find a job. However you have to have an extremely wide network in strategic departments. With this, you can be among the first to apply for the position and if your credentials are enough to impress, they might hire you straight away without needing to advertise the position and interview other candidates.
But for this to happen, you must first work to know many who are in this powerful position to recruit.
As a conclusion, cover all possible basis, the bigger the net, the better the chances of getting an ideal job.

This is a straight to the point, no nonsense Resume. Personally I would love to receive this kind of resume. Save me time to read through paragraphs of useless information.

Jobstreet or Jobstock?
What is the best channel to find a job?
Is it Jobstreet? Is it Jobstock? Or is it Sarawakjobs?
Tumblr media
1. Jobstreet
The undeniable most used website to find jobs in Sarawak is Jobstreet.
For Job Finders
The features are easy to use, simple and straight to the point interface. You get multiple updates on the latest available jobs every day. There are literally hundreds of thousands of vacancies.
For Employers
Employers love this website due to the result they get. Resume just pours in after you post a job. The prices of packages offered are reasonable. For 1 job advertisement, Jobstreet will put in on their page for up to 1 month. Normally, within 1 week, employers can get up to 200 resumes for 1 position. So, if you really are looking for a job, check in on a daily basis and be the first to apply because although the advertisements stands up to a month, usually employers only take resumes from the first week or two.
 2. Jobstock
Personally, this is my favorite web to find jobs.
 For Job Finders
You DON’T NEED TO SIGN UP! That is the beauty of this. I love this because you can view the advertisements for FREE. You don’t need to waste time to sign up and fill in endless forms. They also update a few times a day. You get to send your application they way you want it and you have 100% control over what you want your future employers to see and how to present it to them.
 For Employers
The cost is lower compared to Jobstreet but, of course, the respond you get is also lower as it targets mainly Sarawakians and Sabah (minimum).
 3. Sarawakjobs
 For Job Finders
This website caters EXCLUSIVELY for jobs/vacancies within Sarawak. I believe it’s an effort by the Sarawak government. I don’t really like this because the jobs are few and there aren’t many industries to choose from which is very much unlike Sabah Job Centre. The Sabah counterpart’s website is more frequently updated with wider variety.
 For Employers
Just don’t use this page to find employees.
Tumblr media
What about other websites such as bestjobs.com.my, ricebowl.my, jenjobs.com, glassdoor.com or even mudah.my?
My advice has always and will always be this.
USE ALL THE AVAILABLE WEBSITES TO FIND JOBS!
Why use only one or two? Opportunity is everywhere. When you have mouths to feed, loans to pay and people who depend on you for almost everything, you don’t have the luxury of time. Sign up at all those pages. Log in a few times a day and apply to all the relevant advertisements.
A casual (not really looking for job, just browsing) job finder should send around 5-6 resumes a month.
A normal (wants to find a better job) job finder should send around 10-15 resumes a week.
A serious (NEEDS a job ASAP) job finder should send AT LEAST 30 resumes a day.

As always, I’m glad to help and you can contact me at [email protected]

The Difference between Resume and CV
Tumblr media
So when one asks me what is the best practice? Only to submit the resume? Only to submit the CV? Or to submit both resume and CV?
Tumblr media
It all comes down to what the recruiter request for when they publish the job/vacancy. If they request for both, submit both. If they request for only resume or only CV, then submit only that.
What if the recruiter doesn’t specify what they want? Then it depends on the job/vacancy that they publish. For example, for a supporting position such as clerk, administration assistant, factory operator, personal assistant or customer service, the candidate are not required to submit CV and full academic transcript and certificates. However, for a position that requires specific skills such as engineers, executive chefs, IT executives, accountants or architects, candidates should submit resume, CV, academic transcripts and all relevant certificates. This is so that the recruiters to have access to as much information as possible regarding the candidates to allow them to make the best decision.
Tumblr media
The scenario is different when you are submitting for a general application. In that case, I would suggest a general resume that highlights your immediate strength and attached your CV with all academic transcripts and certificates.
All the best guys... You know how to contact me. [email protected]

Around a hundred a day! Imagine you are the recruiter and your resume will have a higher chance to stand out.

On the other hand, if you know in your heart that there are many other people with the same experience and the same background, you realize that the hiring authority is receiving a lot of resumes.

Yes, STAGE ONE is the most important. Finding enough vacancies to apply for means using MORE than 1 website and more than 1 method.
In my opinion, a minimum of 30 applications on a daily basis is the definition of minimum effort.
What is a Multipurpose Resume
What is a Multipurpose Resume
If you are a job seeker and you are applying for plenty of jobs its best to create a multipurpose resume. Your resume is a very important part of your job search so make sure that its main purpose is to market yourself to get an interview. Although one resume does not fit all.
What to Include in your multipurpose resume:
One page resume, especially for students or inexperienced workers. Of course, mid career professionals or execs can go beyond that but when a twenty something submits three pages, it’s probably formatted with a lot of white space and has little substance and relevant details.
·        No salary or personal information.
·        Identification includes name, address, phone, and even e-mail, centred on the page
·        Education and training are musts, even if just listing high school or certificates. If that is all they have, then this would be appropriate. The earlier you are in your career the more you might need to rely on high school records, for instance
·        When describing job responsibilities, use action words and
·        Use a “Professional History or related subheading to summarize accomplishments.
Now you have all the tools you need to go job hunting. You have a resume you can write covering letters and make confident phone calls. You will still need to know how to make effective use of how to get your CV in front of people and how to get it working for you, whether it’s in an online CV bank, at an agency, or in any of the many methods of job hunting.
Job search stages to help to divide your job search into three stages, each of which can be a success or failure in its own right.
Stage one finding enough vacancies to apply for
Tumblr media
Stage two Getting interviews
Tumblr media
Stage three Getting job offers
Tumblr media
If you are stuck at stage one and not finding enough jobs to apply for, ensure that you are finding all the sources available. If your job is specialized, or don’t come up very often, see if there are ways you could expand the area in which country or indeed different countries where your skills could be in greater demand or you are searching: either geographically, or by broadening your job definition to include related areas of work where your skills could be used.

Likelihood of Landing a Job
Tumblr media
Everyone can land a job but it depends on multiple of factors. I believe that there are 4 main factors to determine a candidate’s possibility in landing a job. I call the below table, “Justin’s Table”.
Tumblr media
                                                Justin’s Table
 Academic Qualifications (Skill Set)
The first and most important aspect in job searching is the candidate’s qualification of skill sets. When screening resumes, recruiters will search for key words that connects/ties/fit the candidate to the vacancy. These key words are ALWAYS shown in the advertisement. They will categorize these information as Job Requirements, Mandatory Requirements, Minimum Requirements, Required Qualifications, Pre-Requisite, Essential Criteria or Must-Have Skills. For example:
 1.      Fluent English, Malay and Mandarin both in written and spoken.
2.      Expert in Linux, OpenShift container platform or Docker.
3.      At least a Degree in Accounting/Finance/Management.
4.      Working knowledge of ISO:9001 and ISO:14000
5.      Certified Company Secretary with valid license.
6.      Willing to relocate and travel frequently within the region.
7.      Able to work at odd working hours.
8.      Possess MBBS or equivalent, possess valid Annual Practicing Certificate, registered with Malaysian Medical Council.
So, for a resume to have the highest possibility to be taken notice, the keywords from the advertisement MUST be clearly stated in the resume. A long resume without these crucial keywords, no matter how impressive it is, will not get through the screening stages.
 Working experience
This information is scrutinized in the later part of the second stage (Thinning the Herd) (you can refer to my previous article here https://justinsdaddy.tumblr.com/post/165353709998/preparing-a-resume-what-your-resume-goes). The logic is simple, the more experience u have, the higher your chances to be called for interview and recruited.
Tumblr media
Commitment
There are many candidates that are called for interview but rarely get the job. This is mainly due to their commitments and limitations that hinder them from getting the job. For example:
 1.      Job cannot offer minimum salary that the candidates require (due to personal or family reasons).
2.      Job demands prolonged working hours or frequent travelling times for candidates with family commitments.
3.      Challenging job location (interior regions without modern facilities).
Depending on the nature of the job, recruiters might be bias in selecting candidates. For example, for a high level corporate job, recruiters usually lean towards candidates with family because although they will demand higher compensation (salary), these candidates are more stable and less likely to resign in the near future.
However, for a position that requires frequent travelling and relocation, a single-status candidate is more desirable it is easier for them who has less commitment.
 Job-Finding Effort
I categorise job seekers in 2 categories; Coal and Gold.
Coal:  It’s difficult to find job nowadays.
Me:     How long have u been searching?
Coal:   9 months or so
Me:     How many websites are u using?
Coal:  Jobstreet lah. How many are there?
Me:     How many applications have u send?
Coal:  At least 10.
Gold:  It’s difficult to find job nowadays.
Me:     How long have u been searching?
Gold:  9 months or so
Me:     How many websites are u using?
Gold: Jobstreet, Jobstock, Indeed, Jobrapido, mudah, the star job, jora, glassdoor, ricebowl, careerjet and I even go to individual websites such as Naim, F&N, Telekom, Sarawak Energy, Petronas, Shell and Malaysia Airport.
Me:     How many applications have u send?
Gold: At least 30 a day...
Tumblr media
I will always help candidate “Gold” to find a job. “Gold” candidates are rare. Their problems usually are minor and technical like bad resume formats, bad word selections in resume or they apply jobs that are not suitable compared to their qualifications.
So, looking back at Justin’s Table, how likely are you to land a job?

Preparing a Resume – What your resume goes through?
I can never repeat this statement enough, “When applying for a job, YOU MUST PUT YOURSELF IN THE SHOE OF THE RECRUITER!”
I have received many resumes and 99% of those are from my email. Imagine receiving a lot of these emails; to save time, I usually skip the cover letters and click the attached resume right away.
Seeing a lot, and I mean A LOT, of resumes, I know what I am looking for. I straight away look for the keywords such as “5 years’ experience”, “willing and able to travel/relocate”, educational back grounds, qualifications, skill sets and expected compensations. These are the basic, most fundamental information that I need to know before I am able to precede the candidate to the next stage.
Tumblr media
Stage 1 (Preliminary Screening)
At this stage, I want to spend less than 1 minute to confirm these crucial information. These are what slow the whole selection process down.
1.      Missing or lack of information
2.      Outdated resume
3.      Bad resume formats
 Stage 2 (Thinning the herd)
I will only read through the resumes thoroughly after the resume passes the first basic stage. In this second stage, I need to determine whether a candidate barely meets the minimum requirement or already has a strong command of the job. I expect to spend no more than 5 minutes per candidate at this stage. Here, I will study in more detail these information
1.      Required skill sets
2.      Related experience
3.      Education backgrounds
 Stage 3 (Candidate Ranking)
In this late stage before calling candidates for interview, I scrutinize their resume to rank them according to the best, most likely to be hired candidate to the least possible candidates. This is also where I return back and check the cover letter and email sent. I usually get around 10-15 candidates to interview for 1 position. It will take up to 10-15 minutes per candidate at this stage. In this stage, these are the things I look for
1.      Grammatical errors
2.      Typos
3.      Amount of information included (relevant or not)
Tumblr media
Screening through 100 resumes takes at least whole day to process. It is a very tiring process as I will need unconditional focus. I’ll talk about these stages in more details in my next article.
