He was wondering if Tasuku would be happy at the news, struggling of how to put it to him as he failed to notice that squirming little body trying to slip off of the bed.  “Hey!” stopping him with an arm curled around his thin middle, Kai pulled Tasuku back to the edge of the bed, sitting him down. “Where do you think you’re going? Especially in just a big t-shirt?” Such a reckless kid... and so quick to assume responsibility for himself. He was trying to grow up way too fast and Kai didn’t want any of it. This city only needed one Kai Toshiki in it, after all. Any carbon copies would not be welcome in the nearby future.
Tumblr media
“Didn’t you realise it by now?” Voice still stern as he stared Tasuku down, it was done in jest, unable to withdraw his smile that snuck away from his control as he brought a careful hand atop those fluffy, sky blue curls.  “This is... your home now, too.”
Home
When Tasuku awoke again, he still felt horribly exhausted, but it was better than the days preceding. He hadn’t had to sleep on a hard, cold surface or face a rude awakening via the normal cacophony of a city. Instead, he was warm, and surrounding by soft fabric, and it had been better than he had felt in weeks.
“Mmn… Good…”
But when he came to a little further, he realized the terrible burden he had placed upon Kai by falling asleep. After he had gone through the trouble of cooking for Tasuku too…!
“U-um… Sorry…for falling asleep…”
Ah… But he had definitely overstepped his boundaries. Even if he hadn’t, there was no way Kai would want to support him too, right? This momentary comfort…. It was over now, wasn’t it?
Tumblr media
“…Thank you for helping me… I’ll…go now…”
It would hurt a lot less than being kicked out.

It had been certainly been an arduous night, Kai thinking through a long and difficult mental debate on whether or not he could let Tasuku stay under his roof. Not that the idea itself was a bad one, per se, but he had to look at the factual points and lay out what he could handle and what he could not. The good outweighed the bad, and with a little more elbow grease he could still support himself and Tasuku at the same time, so...
In the end, he had resigned to his quick attachment, not seeing anywhere else that the little one could go, or if anyone else would be willing to take him in at this point. He’d certainly take his chances with this bet, making sure to talk over the details with Aichi for some potential support. He could always rely on his closest childhood friend, after all (even if he was a little meek).
Having sat by Tasuku’s side since early morning, it was already veering close to noon, tiny sounds of stirring catching Kai’s attention. Reaching over to smooth over fly away bangs from the younger’s eyes, Kai couldn’t help but notice that there had been something adorable about such a peaceful sleeping face..

“You slept like a rock... How do you feel, Tasuku?”

Sharing a meal with appreciative company was always nice, especially when compliments followed. As he finished up his own plate, Kai bemusedly watched Tasuku plow through his own. shoveling in spoonful after spoonful of rice and stir fry into his mouth. His munching cheeks reminded him of a greedy little hamster, never stopping to really chew properly. He better not get a stomach ache on top of all of this..
“Ah--!” Before he knew it, the younger was falling asleep in his chair, nodding off and hobbling a bit as he threatening to crash to the floor. Catching him before he could teeter off of his seat, Kai had no choice but to take Tasuku into his arms, finally noticing how petit and light he actually was, much to his own surprise. Holding him carefully, like he was handling a delicate vase, Kai carried Tasuku over to his bed, pulling the thin sheet away before setting him down, tucking him in soon after. Tasuku was honestly such a good kid, and he probably hadn’t seen or had a soft bed like this in a long time... ”... Night, Tasuku.” ......... Aaarghh.
Tumblr media
Damn it, Toshiki... now look at the mess you’ve landed yourself in.. getting attached to another little street rat..
Kicking himself mentally for having fallen so quickly, Kai sighed and almost resigned to his fate then and there, sitting at the edge of the bed as he glanced over at that vulnerable frame sleeping peacefully... He couldn’t honestly abandon him at this rate could he..? Pulling out his cell phone and quietly flicking through his contacts, it was about time he got an opinion from the most trusted source he had for these kinds of things. ’Guess... I better tell Aichi ‘bout this, too..

Kai was a little clumsy, but ultimately gentle in his treatment of the wounds, Tasuku trying not to make a sound as he administered the first aid. It did feel better after the wounds were dressed–if not physically, then psychologically. At least he wouldn’t bleed everywhere now…
Tumblr media
“Really…?”
The praise was nice too… Especially in the young child’s difficult life, where kind words were few and far between.
Tasuku only nodded; there was no way he was going to be picky when this was his first meal in days. Eagerly padding into the kitchen, where the steaming plate awaited, Tasuku tried not to eat too quickly lest he appeared discourteous–nevertheless, he finished the dish in no less than fifteen minutes, the savoury taste still lingering on his tongue.
Tumblr media
“…It’s really good, Kai-san.”
He wanted to cry. He hadn’t had food this good since…….
Placing the spoon down on the polished plate, there wasn’t even a grain of rice left, Tasuku trying to fight back a yawn as his heavy eyelids drooped. His little belly was full and he was warm now, a perfect recipe for a nap…
In that moment, he forgot that Kai was sharing the kitchen with him, Tasuku’s head already nodding a little as he tried to stay awake.

By the time he heard the water shut in the bathroom and two tiny feet waddle into the room over, the chicken and veggie stir fry was already golden and caramelized, Kai filling up two plates to the brim. On top of fluffy white rice, fresh from the steamer, it looked pretty good... To be honest, however, it actually wasn’t anything fancy for his level of expertise--it was just some left overs from the past few days all dumped together--but it would definitely satisfy a hungry stomach. And now for the last chore... “You look squeaky clean,” slipping out of the kitchen with the first aid kit already in hand, Kai also took up his discarded jacket and threw it atop Tasuku’s head playfully. “Let me just make sure your hair’s not dripping everywhere..” Giving those sky blue curls a good rubbing, Kai refrained from a smile at the sight of some mussy cowlicks sticking up every which way, patting some of them down gently. “Now let’s get you bandaged up.” Kneeling before the younger at the foot of the couch and getting out the spray disinfectant, he began to get to work, trying not to put Tasuku into too much discomfort. But the younger was taking it like a champ, hardly making a peep as Kai got through most of it fairly quickly. (He had to be relatively good at treating wounds; after all, he’d had plenty of years of experience being in a gang.)
Tumblr media
“You’re a lot tougher than I was at your age. I would yell and complain when I had to put disinfectant on..” Trying to keep things light-hearted, and distract the other from the pain, Kai covered up the last of his injuries, helping him to his feet as he turned towards the kitchenette. “There. Now, we can have dinner. I hope you like stir fry.... there’s onions and string beans in it. You can’t be picky though, all right?”
a new family
Padding along, quietly and obediently, the only thing that kept Tasuku’s tiny little legs going was the prospect of a warm meal and a place to stay, even if this would probably only be a temporary arrangement. If Kai would eventually dump him back onto the streets, that would be fine–Tasuku was at the end of his rope, and any opportunity for help there was, he would seize it.
He followed Kai’s instructions to a T, careful not to disturb or touch anything else in the home. The shower felt heavenly, even if the hot, hard water seared at his scrapes–it was like he was washing off a whole year’s worth of grime and dirt. By the time he stepped out, his hair was sopping wet, and his cheeks were pink from the heat.
The t-shirt was large and baggy, and the hem a lone already reached his knees. Tasuku was quite a small boy, but that would be his blessing here–he wouldn’t need much more in terms of clothes to feel comfortable within the warm apartment, and he probably wouldn’t eat too much…
Tumblr media
Placing himself down quietly on the couch, Tasuku simply waited quietly for Kai to finish. The aroma wafting in from the kitchen smelled divine, but Tasuku would refrain from pestering Kai until he was done. He was already doing so much for him; it would be wrong to ask for more.

Kai initially thought the child would flat-out refuse--that he would refrain from taking the help of a willing stranger--but those large cerise hues were so quick to brighten at his offer... such trusting innocence that still held in those eyes that desperately clung to the first instance of kindness... Not even Kai would ever think to abuse that. He wouldn’t let anyone else do so either. (Who knew he’d harbor such a quick protective nature like this?) “Yeah, it’s fine. C’mon, Tasuku. It’s close by.” ---- With Tasuku at his heels, Kai was careful to keep an eye open for any more trouble, but, in the end, at least the way back had been peaceful enough. Up a few flights of stairs and a hall way later, he was sure that the little one would be completely exhausted by the end of their trek, but he seemed to be saving face (for now). Getting the door open with his rusted key, it stuck fast but swung with a creak, Kai nudging his hand against the younger’s back to prompt him forward, entering right after into the stuffy apartment with a tired exhale. Home sweet home.... Removing his school blazer subsequently before lazily slipping off his shoes, he tugged his collared shirt open at the neck just so he wouldn’t swelter against the muffled heat hanging about the living space. Moving to open the windows to let some cool air in--there was no ventilation in this place and the warming weather was gonna make things brutal once again this year--Kai then dug through his closet for anything the younger could change into. A big shirt with a silly print on the front... well, it would have to do.
Tumblr media
“The bathroom is right over there. You know how to use a shower, right? You can change into this. There’s a towel hanging by the sink you can use to dry off; leave it in the laundry bin at the corner afterwards.” His prose was a little too rough around the edges, not really leaving any room for objections, but Tasuku seemed like an adaptable, smart kid. He could definitely figure things out. “Once you’re done, I’ll patch you up and we can eat. If you need anything, just yell, got it?””
a new family
Perhaps even more painful and frustrating was the pity–why show such sympathetic eyes, when in the end, Tasuku would still be left with nothing? Why reach out to him when nothing would change, and he’d still be starving and hurting and helpless–
“…?”
Or…not?
Tumblr media
“…Really? You’ll let me come with you…?”
Was this real? Tasuku almost couldn’t believe it–it was too good to be true. His parents had warned him not to go off with strangers but honestly…Tasuku was so desperate at this point that it would seem foolish not to. After all, hadn’t Kai just helped him?
“I-if…if it’s really okay…”
Dinner…and even a bath, if Kai would allow it… That seemed nice. Tasuku couldn’t remember the last time he had eaten anything substantial. He was starving…
“…I’m…Ryuuenji Tasuku… Thank you for helping me, Kai-san…”

Oh. Oh, so the worst possible outcome was truly at hand here. Not only was this kid in a similar spot as Kai had been years ago, but he was so weary and exhausted, there was hardly an ounce of tears left in him to cry. That was no way to see a child, turned hard and jaded by the cruel society around him. For once, Kai honestly felt compelled to take responsibility. After all, if he hadn’t let his gang get trounced by their rivals, if he hadn’t been held back after school like he did, then perhaps, this small boy wouldn’t have met such a harsh fate today. His comrades would have been on more careful patrol--his side streets wouldn’t have been literred with so much trash--and both of them would have been a lot less upset. Kneeling to the little one’s height so they could speak eye-to-eye, Kai’s way of staying on a mutual level, he fought his usual gruff facade to appear more friendly, trustworthy, or what have you. I can’t just leave him out here now that he’s barely standing...
Tumblr media
“Hey... if you’d like, why don’t you come back with me and I’ll cover your scrapes? I’ll make you some dinner, too.” His apartment wasn’t much, something an acquaintance of a friend had helped him get, but it would definitely be enough for one tiny body to get comfortable in... even if just for a night or two. “.... name’s Kai Toshiki, by the way. I live here in the city parts.” And Kairos was Kai’s home... his city. And though he was infamous as one of the most trouble making delinquents out there, he still felt a bit of ownership to the people and places around him, even if they were a newcomer like this one.
a new family
…He was still here? Usually, people didn’t want to bother with a street rat like him… Tasuku only nodded in response, thinking that would be the end of that, but he had never expected the kind offer.
Tasuku’s first instinct was to decline. He couldn’t grow up quickly if he accepted the man’s help. But his knees were hurting, his feet and arms were sore, and he was so, so tired and dreading the look of anger on the shopkeeper’s face. If the man could help alleviate that, then how could he say no?
“…Okay…”
It had been a terrifying fifteen minutes, Tasuku fighting the urge to duck behind the brunette the entire time, but he held out. When they finally left, it was like a breath of fresh air–but Tasuku didn’t feel much better. He was still hungry, and his feet were still achy from lack of rest.
“……”
Tumblr media
“…They’re gone.”
Strangely enough, saying the words didn’t threaten to spring the tears as much as he thought it would. It seemed like the distant past, a whole other life when he had had a happy, loving family. He felt so detached from it. This month had been so long and hard…
“My house was right at the edge of Palaria… But it’s gone too. That’s why I’m here.”
…It was just the truth at this point. Nothing sad, nothing painful–just the plain, simple, harsh truth, and Tasuku had resigned to it.

I’ve never seen this kid around before...
And knowing the neighborhoods a little better than your average city dweller, Kai would have been able to at least recognize the face, but... not once had he seen this one even once before, even on his days off from school. Perhaps, did he and his family move in recently? Or...? ”--.......” Eventually moving over and helping the little one gather up whatever they could salvage, warning him not to touch the cracked pieces of whatever had shattered around them, Kai sighed, knowing that look in the boy’s eyes as he fought back tears. He was more concerned about upsetting someone else than his own injuries, wasn’t he? He’s reminding me of..--
Tumblr media
“Was that for someone else..?” It was a far-off assumption, just based on his speculation, but it was one he was willing to make, just to figure out the situation.  “.... So you don’t get in trouble, let me go with you. I can explain what happened to the person these were for.” ---- “---Thanks. He’ll be more careful. I appreciate it.” Having to jump a handful of loopholes, Kai had finally been able to convince the shop keep not to blame the boy for this matter. (Which had been completely out of his hands to begin with.) As he had thought, these expensive groceries had been for him, the kid having done such an important task just to make some extra pocket change... of which he wasn’t getting any as a slap on the wrist. Well.. it was better than losing that trust he had been willing to build up. But now that that was over... Turning to face the boy, who didn’t look too well at all, still limping and on the verge of tears, Kai bent down to his height, offering a small smile as he pet his head softly.
Tumblr media
“See? Everything’s all good. He wasn’t even that mad. Now why don’t you tell me where your parents are? Or where your house is? I’ll bring you there...”
a new family
His silent pleas for help had been answered, the rain of beatings suddenly subsiding as a full-blown brawl broke out right there on the street. Tasuku didn’t know what was going on–he didn’t want to know, simply curling into himself and covering his eyes and ears until the storm was over.
And when it was, the voice that had been so rough when addressing the thugs, softened when directed at Tasuku, and he found it in himself to look up.
Tumblr media
“…”
His first instinct was to shrink away. The hardened features, the bruises on his hand–the young man looked quite frightening, especially to a boy who had just been subjected to such a horrible beating. But the softening teal eyes were what ultimately caused him to trust the brunette, Tasuku shakily reaching out and taking the offered hand.
“…Th-thank you…mister…”
Brushing past the young man, Tasuku limped over to the torn bag of groceries, trying to ignore the searing pain in his scraped and bleeding knees. Was there anything that could be salvaged from this mess…?
He’s going to be mad…
And it would cost Tasuku the trust he had been building up. Sniffling a little, he attempted to gather what he could back into the bag, trying not to think of whatever scolding he would get later.

--It was already an awful day to begin with, not that Kai could even imagine it getting any worse. From his fellow gang members getting overwhelmed and pummeled after a brawl, to now having to look for another part time job because he was a few minutes late again due to over sitting detention, things were just jolly in Kai Toshiki’s world. Certainly there had been drearier days, days where he couldn’t even move or get up out of bed, but... to think that there were people in this world that would steal from children? Now that was messed up. Not that it was unfathomable--Kai knew what the lowest of trashes were like-- but who in their right mind would think to pummel a tiny boy just for his groceries...? Lowlifes, that was for sure. And coming from a street rat, it was a familiar sight, one all too the same--getting so easily taken advantage of because he was weaker and smaller--one that boiled Kai’s blood to the point of no sanity left.  He had to do something.
So his assault was wordless, vicious and quick, lunging at the closest guy to him and shoving him to the ground. No sooner after breaking his nose with a well-aimed boot to the face, Kai retaliated just as vehemently to the next one trying to grab him from behind, a fist meeting an unready jaw. Hoping he had broken it, just in spite of his rage, Kai thrashed the lot of them until every single one of them as bleeding in some shape or form. He wouldn’t have felt justified--satiated, if what have you--if there was not the sight of red in front of him. Kai now standing before the whimpering child, acting as a wall in between him and his attackers, his anger only arose at the sight of cracked eggs and smashed fruit sprawled about the pavement, wondering why these bastards were still alive and breathing. Who knows who those had been for... or the consequences for not having returning with them.
Tumblr media
“What? You still think it’s funny to beat up little kids?” You sick fucks? Though, he refrained from speaking that latter part, given that he was in the clear presence of a child. Stepping forward and making his intent loud and clear--that he wouldn’t be against bringing them to the verge of death at this moment--the group literally shrieked and turned on their heels, running with their tails in between their legs, a common sight for such a spineless bunch of worthless people. The damage had already been done though, and to think, if only they had been patrolling their turf more carefully--- I swear if I see them again... Calming himself once they were out of his sight, there was nothing he could do about the spoiled goods but, Kai could only stare at the boy curled up at his feet, wondering just what were the right words to say in this tender moment. But first and foremost, before he would speak, he held out his bruised hand, throbbing from those reckless punches he had just thrown, teal optics softening by just a margin. “Can you stand..? It’s okay, I won’t hurt you.”
a new family
The loss of his parents was sudden and shocking, the horrible tragedy leaving Tasuku alone and afraid. His mother and father had always stressed that, if he needed help, go to the city. But he had lost his house in the disaster as well, and any money he could’ve used to board the train; and with nothing but the clothes on his back and his parents’ words, Tasuku began the long trek through the forest in the direction he hoped the city was.
When he finally arrived in Kairos, days later, he was starving and exhausted. A kind passerby had been gracious enough to bring him food, water and fresh clothes, but that was the extent they had been able to give. At least, it was something to keep him going. He figured, perhaps idealistically, he would be able to take care of himself after that.
He had to learn how. That horrible feeling of helplessness and despair… Tasuku never wanted to feel it again.
A month and a half had passed since then, Tasuku doing what he could to make a living in the bustling city. He ran from small shop to small shop, offering whatever help a nine year-old could. If he was lucky, he was given small change or food for his troubles. But only if the shopkeepers had anything to spare for a little street rat like him.
If he wasn’t lucky, then Tasuku would never ask for anything more. To help someone, to make someone happy, would be to offer his aid without expecting anything in return. That’s what the young boy believed.
Still… It was getting harder and harder to ignore the growing ache of hunger.
“Excuse me…”
Trying to navigate the busy streets with a towering bag of goods that was far too big for his little arms to bear without falling was proving to be a challenging feat, but Tasuku was determined to do this right. It had been the first time this particular shopkeeper had trusted Tasuku with money, and he didn’t want to let him down.
He had been able to carry on without incident, at least, until he was a block away from the store, when a few punks had begun to tail him. Trying to ignore them and avoid eye contact, Tasuku only began walking faster, but his ploy to get away was thwarted when one of them approached and stepped into his path.
“…!”
“Hey, kid… Nice stuff ya got there. You wanna share with big brother?”
“U-um…” He looked up at the towering individual, shrinking away. “Sorry… This is for someone else–”
But the punk only guffawed, reaching over and smacking the bag out of his little hands. It tore open on the cement, spilling its contents all over. Some eggs shattered in their carton, milk pouring onto the street, and an expensive porcelain bowl broke to pieces as it crashed onto the ground.
Tumblr media
“Ah…!”
And Tasuku could only watch with a sinking heart as the men rooted through the bag for anything that could be salvaged…
“N-no… Wait! Stop! Please–!”
Rushing forward and grabbing hold of one of their coats, he was only shoved aside roughly, falling hard to the ground. His palms and knees were already blistering and burning, but he absolutely refused to give in. Again and again, he rushed the rowdy thugs, only to be beaten aside each time until they had finally had enough and began to turn on him instead.
“This kid’s so annoying…!” “C’mon, let’s teach’im to respect his elders…”
And it was only then when the boots and fists began to beat at him did he cower away, shielding his face as best as he could from blow after blow after blow. It hurt… It hurt so much–everything hurt. And he couldn’t do anything about it.
He was completely powerless.
Help…!

"That's two detentions now." No, Kai wasn't going to let this little blonde devil get away with feigning innocence OR testing his patience. This would result in the exalting of pure, unadulterated JUSTICE! "I can do this all day, Kenny. All. Day."

Well, his desk was slammed upon. He didn’t jump, but he did pull down the collar of his coat as the other spoke, his lips curling into a deceptively-adorable smile that obviously meant he was feeling no fear.

W-wait--Stop, stop, stop..! Maybe it was the tug to his hair that brought him back, or simply his own breathlessness that allowed for him to finally pull away and cool down, but Kai was quick to cease his perverted ministrations, half-lidded eyes barely registering the fact that there was now a line of saliva still connecting his and Aichi's mouths. Just how... had that escalated to such extreme lengths? Now that he was of a reasonable distance from the younger, it was much easier to erase all of those suggestive ideas that had filled his mind previously in the midst of such wild heat. Taking a moment to compose himself, wiping Aichi's chin with the back of his hand and pulling down the fabric of that rolled up shirt, Kai then leaned forward, pressing his forehead against that tinier shoulder. Oh, boy... what to even say now, after something like that? Something so... unexplainable in words? Still, he attempted to speak in between labored breaths just to be considerate.
Tumblr media
"...Sorry... Aichi." Aaah, this was so awkward. He couldn't look him in the eye like this. Why hadn't Aichi stopped him? Doing something like that--even having considered something like that--when they weren't even something past friends yet..? He was just more baffled than anything that Aichi had been so quick to play along... "I didn't scare you or anything... did I?"
They always said to be careful what you wish for.
And running out of air, Aichi was quickly learning how true it rang.

Oops. Perhaps that had come across as too forceful? Or did this kid have something to hide? It was probably the former, given how wide-eyed this guy looked. Actually, come to think of it, the way he held himself, that baby-face-- He reminds me of Aichi.
Tumblr media
"... Just wondering if you'd take a moment to help me put up these fliers," of which Kai was already handing half of the stack to, without even receiving a yes or no yet. "--And possibly bring some to your class and help spread the word of these events if you could?" But since Kai wasn't that modest of a guy, he decided to use that possible clincher anyway. Sorry, kid, even if you look like someone I know, you won't get away that easily. "I mean, unless you'd like me to ask why you looked so suspicious just now..?"

So soft... And Aichi's lips were so very soft, like marshmallows or velvet, but with each passing second, Kai just wanted more and more and--
Sorry, about this, Aichi.. Going along with his instinctual need, a curious tongue sneaked its way past against those slightly parted lips desperate for air, making contact with smooth teeth and then the rest of Aichi's mouth altogether. It tasted like the coffee they had just indulged in, to no surprise, of course, but apart of Kai had wished Aichi's tongue would have been a little sweeter (in accordance to his own weird fantasies or what have you...). With a slightly disgruntled and throated noise, Kai continued their passionate exchange, just kissing and mingling tongues at his own discretion, selfishly denying Aichi of any breaks for oxygen as his hands soon began sneaking under the bottom of Aichi's shirt, fingertips pressing against that tender, warm skin of that exposed belly-- Aichi... Aichi...
With the previous kiss in mind, Aichi was prepared to set himself up for this one. Readying himself while Kai moved closer, inwards, forcing down his fright that he might not be enough to match what the brunet was hoping for.
Because he trusted him, and he wanted to match up to that.
Their lips met and set themselves comfortably, Aichi feel the heat in his face escalate; cheeks burning, but wanting… more than anything, to draw it out. If there could be a way to lengthen that wondrous experience together, he would have taken it.
Tumblr media
Without thinking, his small hands reached forward, tangling his fingers into Kai’s shirt and tugging, to draw him forward, keep him close. It was always magical to be with him, let alone show their affection for one another.
He wanted to prove it, that his feelings for Kai ran much deeper than friendship or revering him as an idol. There was more. Much more. And he was certain, given Kai had made the first move yet again, that he felt the same way.
He wanted to find a way to overcome his shyness, to convey that for Kai to see and be certain.

"Wait, what are you doing?" Though that was an issue to worry about later.
