It's official, I am teaching CI! I am calling it "CI and Performance" to give a hint that I am not only interested in the dancing and weight-sensing aspects of CI, but also in things like ensemble work, and allowing oneself to be witnessed. I believe it brings more options to CI practice. :) Ok! It's starting THIS SUNDAY! I am a little worried that no one will come. But I will sit in the room and dream of CI until someone comes. :) Wheee! http://tanzmitkai.simplybook.it/
Hi! Just a li'l update.
Nov 2023 - Rehearsed and performed with Meghna Bhardwaj for her Yarning project (phase 1) at K3. Full of gratitude for that. We performed 28th Nov at Probebühne Eins. Always such a pleasure to be at this cute cosy platform. <3
Dec 2023 - Helped Martin Eklund with This is Internet. (By the way, I previously also helped Martin with Lines Lacking Color as a pole dancer - didn't write about it before, so felt like mentioning it now.) And Hamburg Lollipop Club collaborated with Jupiter Kids, offering busking, on-demand classes, and workshops on the Lollipop. I had fun teaching both adults and children. :)
Jan 2024 - Started work as guest artist-educator, in Trinidad Martinez's project Der Ort - Tanz Wo Du Bist. Also started something like a pet project (it feels easy, fun, super-dorky), Tanzraumförderung is social and cool, where I use state-funded studio space to network and dance with colleagues in Hamburg, from Jan to Mar 2024. (Thank you Tanzraumförderung! And artists - write me if you're reading this and are curious / want to join, it's very easygoing and no-frills.)
Feb 2024 (now) - I discovered that maaaybe Hamburg Lollipop Club will die :(((( because I don't have access to space and everything gets so hard without space. HOWEVER, I have new plans to try and start teaching contact improv in Hamburg!! (Another one of my ploys to start living a regular life in Hamburg.) Meanwhile, Annika Ditzer and I got funding to do Cat in the Clouds, a children's show - my first ever children's show! - so I am very excited about that x 1 million. :)
Throwback to August 2023. I did a small performance called Lolli and her Worries, with Hamburg Lollipop Club. This was at Jupiter, the famous shopping-mall-turned-art-gallery.
This week, Lolli is officially nomadic/homeless again, but I'm always on the lookout for space and look forward to the next time I can set her up!

Taught a choreographic workshop at Zukunft Tanzt Festival in Frankfurt.

Ciao!
A busy cat.
Aug - started K3 residency, began rehearsing the most elusive solo i have ever encountered (?) (sad story) (also received artistic and emotional support from Louise Lee in Singapore)
Sep - taught a choreographic workshop at Zukunft Tanzt Festival in Frankfurt; "met the public" at the event "People Who Share K3 Studios" at K3, ran the first ill mowos workshop :)
Oct - experimented with "October Lab: Modify Kai's Show" (Daniella Preap and Christopher Dippert help me modify a pre-existing solo show); ran the second ill mowos workshop; went to Copenhagen to work with Lena Bondeson et al on a project called New Nordic Poling (pole dancing + activism); led a Touch Lab workshop (consensual exploratory touch practice) at Fluctoplasma Festival in Hamburg; meanwhile in Singapore, long-time collaborators Bernice Lee and Jereh Leung bring "In other words - an off script gym" to life at Objectifs - Centre for Photography and Film, thanks to curator Daniel Chong - and so I become a long-distance, internet-enabled, choreographer / workshop-designer! <3
Nov - went to Paris for Change Now (Erasmus-funded exchange programme, leftover from my student days) where I gave a workshop called Cake Workshop (it's about art+activism, listening, and eating cake!). Now back in Hamburg and revving up for a mini-performance at Probebühne Eins (Nov 18th), will share the stage with Laura Stellacci, looking forward. And the third ill mowos is coming up too - Nov 26th!
Meanwhile, I'm organising "December Lab: Work, Play, Rest" - and look forward to the long-term rolling-along of "something" that will lead to a production in March (for TanzHochDrei Festival at K3). <3
May: A lot of rehearsals for different shows. :p
June: Performance of Cotton Flowers Exist, with Maria Tsitroudi, at Kultur im Zentrum Gießen, part of MADE Festival. Performance of Standard Practice, and giving a workshop, in Singapore, part of THE Cont.act Contemporary Dance Festival. Rehearsals wth Bernice Lee and Jereh Leung, in Singapore, for an upcoming performance-workshop, Dance & Conversation Lab (will write more details later). Rehearsals with Laura Stellacci for Antiphon, and Johannes Schropp for A Pit Practice, both in Gießen.
July: Performed Antiphon with Laura Stellacci et al, and workshopped A Pit Practice with Johannes Schropp et al, both part of Rough Proposals, in Gießen. Spent a week in Amsterdam for the Change Now programme. Taught CI as part of a rehearsal process for Joanna Tischkau, that was pretty cool.
Also during these months: taught CI regularly at the university, ran a series of workshops called Dance Dance Conversation, briefly ran workshops for teenagers, and got ready for the move to Hamburg.
I'm in Hamburg now as I write this. I'm going to do an 8-month residency at K3 and I really hope this gives me time to settle down and do a more continuous, deeper project, rather than a handful of small ones all the time.
To get myself started at K3, I'm going to host monthly workshops!, about listening and work. Please come along if you're in Hamburg. :)
Performance of COSY (Clothing-optional Shaky Yexploration). 11 Feb 2022. Part of the Y.E.S. series at WERKSTATT, Frankfurt.
Performers decide what levels of dress or undress they want to be in. More-naked and less-naked people co-exist and share the space.
Performers: Ira Wichert, Hanna Launikovich, Islam Elnebishy, Ingo Lange, Lena Bondeson, and myself Eng Kai Er.
