Another reason for intense return to office pushes is because of the debt market. Companies broadly keep little cash on hand, preferring to put extra cash into bonuses, stock buybacks, etc, rather than stockpiling and saving because why do that when I can buy up debt? If I buy up debt I can get a higher rate of return than on investment, and I know I'm more than likely going to get it back from another giant corporation. Now if I'm a national grocery store chain, and I'm trying to build a new store, I have no cash on hand to finance it but what i do have is a steady stream of interest payments on the debt I own from other companies/entities. As long as they're good for it, so am I. Problems turn up when something like the commercial real estate industry, something requiring a large initial investment and therefore a tasty purchasable debt that was, until 2020, a pretty much sure-win when it came to office space, so naturally there are massive companies and financial institutions with a strong interest in making sure that this once stalwart sector of both the real estate and also financial economy of the US stays valuable. My knowledge about all this is decidedly non-expert and anecdotal, just from conversations with accounting friends who work for some of the "big four" accounting firms, 2 of whom specifically handle 3rd party corporate financial audits. One compared the current scenario we face with a house of cards: if any one major sector fails and defaults, it could cascade to dozens of unrelated companies, industries, sectors, etc.

Basically tldr an additional reason large companies are so pressed to get people back into the office is because if we can't justify the existence of massive useless office buildings then commercial real estate companies might stop being able to repay their debt, and the debt they were repaying won't be able to pay of the debt it was supposed to repay, and THAT debt won't be able to repay the debt IT was supposed to repay, etc etc etc

You order a package off Amazon. When the Amazon delivery guy shows up to your door, instead of giving you the package you bought, he beats the shit out of you. Then, when he sees that you are not dead yet, he calls all of the Amazon delivery people in the area and they all proceed to beat the shit out of you. Miraculously, you survive. Another miracle: a friend in your neighborhood caught the assault on video. After a month of recovery and extensive hospital bills that you have no idea what to do with, the video has gone viral. You read the comments below. “This is what happens to people who fuck with Amazon!!!” Someone says. “I’ve never been beaten up by Amazon employees, and I’ve been using them all my life!” Someone else comments. Later, you start to see articles popping up about your story. They all mention that when you were 17, your license was revoked for reckless driving. In a Facebook post on your mom’s feed, someone is going on a rant about how not all Amazon delivery guys are bad, and that if you look really close, the “bad” ones are just stressed out. Your name is trending on Twitter. Jeff Bezos films a response to your attack, denouncing the video of you getting beaten to within an inch of your life by his employees as becoming “a symbol of hate towards Amazon.” The people who attacked you still deliver packages around your neighborhood. You saw one of them just yesterday as you were watering your plants. You still can’t pay your hospital bills. Your phone dings- Twitter again. “Maybe if you didn’t order from Amazon,” someone pipes up, “this wouldn’t have happened!”
