Cultural Cuisine: Bosco's Birthday Bash

I think it's safe to say that this is probably a spread of Bosco's favorite foods.

Red Braised Spare Ribs

Red-Braised Spare Ribs or Hong Shao Pai Gu (红烧排骨) is a popular Chinese pork dish characterized by its sweet and savory flavor profile. This is achieved through the red-braising method: Cooking the ribs in a mixture of light & dark soy sauce, rock sugar, Shaoxing wine, and other aromatics like ginger & star anise. This dish was also served in the Beifong home, although with less rib meat and more bone marrow.

Soy Sauce Braised Chicken Wings

This one might be a bit of a stretch, but that bowl of light brown ovals looks like braised chicken wings to me. Soy Sauce Braised Chicken Wings or Hong Shao Ji Yi (紅燒雞翼) are a popular dish known for their sweet and savory flavor, as well as their glossy, sticky glaze. They're a staple of Chinese-American restaurants. This dish was also served in the Beifong home.

Steamed Lobster Tail

When I think of Chinese lobster dishes, I always think of the Cantonese-style Steamed Lobster Tails (蒸龍蝦尾) served at the fancy sit-down restaurants in California. This dish was also served in the Beifong home, although their lobster tails were smaller.

Roast Duck

The roast duck with the sauce is likely Peking Duck (北京烤鴨). The meat is characterized by its thin and crispy skin. Historically, it was considered a dish for the Chinese upper class due to how time consuming it was to prepare, making it an appropriate dish to serve at Bosco's birthday dinner. You can get Peking duck at most sit-down Chinese restaurants. This was also served in Song's home.

Pickled Ginger

Pickled ginger is a popular side dish in both Chinese (Cantonese, specifically) and Japanese cooking. It often accompanies heavier meals and acts as a palette cleanser, making it the perfect side dish for Bosco's birthday dinner. Pickled ginger typically has a sweet and tangy flavor with noticeable spiciness from the ginger itself. I find it funny that a dinner for a bear has a better balance of flavors than the meal served by the Beifongs.

Watercress Soup

Watercress soup or Sai Yong Choi Tong (西洋菜汤) is a classic Cantonese soup known for its delicate flavor and various nutritional benefits. The key ingredients of watercress soup are watercress, pork, ginger, and dates.

All in all, Bosco has pretty good taste in food.

What is Kataang Week?

Kataang Week is when we, as a corner of the fandom, celebrate the ship Kataang on Tumblr! The prompts for Kataang Week 2025 were selected through voting this past weekend and all prompts were submitted by Kataangers.

Cool, when is it?

Summer Kataang Week 2025 starts on Monday, July 28th - six weeks from today - and ends on Monday, August 4th.  

Who is the founder of Tumblr’s Kataang Week?

@secretsecrettunnel revived Kataang Week in the summer of 2013 a few years after Avatar: The Last Airbender ended and when the fandom was itching for more Kataang during The Legend of Korra’s run.

Who are the mods?

I would like to take this time to extend a huge thanks to Mods Atarah, Belle, and Celes (@penguinsledder , @itsmoonpeaches , @chocomd ) for all their years of work. They were great mods and are still amazing people and wonderful friends. For several years, Kataang Week wouldn't have happened without them. They are always welcome back if they have the time or desire to be Mods again. Love you guys!

@airbender-dacyon AKA Mod Dan: A Kataang fanfic writer who prefers fluff, but also loves some drama and angst. Mod Dan started writing Kataang stories in 2013 and has helped organize Kataang Week since 2016.

We have at least one new mod joining the Tumblr team this year. This post will be updated along with a separate announcement post when they officially join.

Kataang Week is also being hosted by @dailykataang on Twitter again this year!

How do I participate?

The most common ways to participate are by creating art or writing a fic and posting it online. Some people try and create something for every day while others only fill one or two prompts.  

As always, we want to reassure you that it’s perfectly okay not to do every prompt! We just hope to have lovely pieces to share on each day.

But I can’t draw or write!

That’s totally fine - there are more ways to participate! You can sing a song, create a graphic, write a poem - just about anything really. You can also show your support by reblogging and liking other people’s contributions.

What are the prompts?

The following will be the running order for Kataang Week 2025:

Date Night* - Monday, July 28th

Tui & La/Oma & Shu - Tuesday, July 29th

Bridgerton AU - Wednesday, July 30th

Aging/Growing Old* - Thursday, July 31st

Forbidden/Scandal* - Friday, August 1st

Dancing - Saturday, August 2nd

Roaring Twenties/1920s AU - Sunday, August 3rd

Free Day** - Monday, August 4th

* These prompts have been shortened in name but were originally First Date/Republic City Date Night, Adult Kataang & Old Kataang/Growing Old Together, and "We shouldn't be doing this" (Forbidden Kiss/Love) & Scandal, respectively during voting. You can interpret them as singular or separate prompts and incorporate one or both for each day.

** And as always, there is a Free Day at the end of the week. You can use this day to post anything you’d like! It can be a prompt that didn’t receive enough votes or something you’ve been wanting to work on, anything goes!

How should I tag my work?

The easiest way for us to find your work so we can reblog it to this blog is by using the tag “kataang week”. Using “kataang” and “kataangtag” also help. You must tag one of the three in your first five tags otherwise it doesn’t appear in the search. It is also helpful to tag us directly with @kataang-week.

Sometimes even properly tagged posts may not appear when we search the tags, so if you do not see your content reblogged, please let us know.

Once we’ve reblogged it to this blog we add our own tags (a prompt tag and a user tag) for easy organization. This means we can find all the work for one prompt or all the work from one user in one easy click (this also means that if you have changed your username since participating last year you need to let us know so we can update your tag!).

Can I post my stuff other places online too?

Of course you can!

For those of you who will be posting your works on AO3, feel free to add your fic to our AO3 collection.

Why six weeks? Is that enough time?

Traditionally, we like to provide our content creators seven to eight weeks to create quality content. Kataang Week is also traditionally held in the last week of July. There were delays this year, apologies again. We intend to be on track next year to give everyone ample time to create content.

If you are unable to complete a prompt in time, please do not fret. You can alert this blog by mentioning it in your post (ex. @kataang-week​) or messaging one of the mods and your content will still be shared even if it is a week (or a month - or sometimes more!) late.

We also like to post WIP for Kataang Week and encourage everyone else to do so as well - we reblog it here for motivation!
