Dear Tumblr friends,

Thank you for the birthday greetings! As you can see from the photo, I had a lovely dinner at home.

I'm taking a hiatus from my personal social media for the foreseeable future. I'll be back at the start of each month with some Escaflowne goodies and other surprises.

Today is my birthday, and I'd like to share a very special birthday gift I received from my good friend Jonathan "Jonny" Middleton, who goes by @shin_jonny0613 on Instagram.

This is Jonny's art for his original story set in the world of Pokemon. Playing Pokemon games as kids helped inspire both Jonny and me to be curious about nature and get interested in learning how to identify plants and animals. Here is his description of the character:

"The character shown here is named Katia. She’s a long time friend of the main character and is several years older. Residing in the Galar region (the Pokémon world’s equivalent to the United Kingdom), the relationship between Jonny and Katia was through mutual hobbies and interests via the internet at first. But after the death of Jonny’s Sceptile during the Groudon/Kyogre rampage; she decided to invite the main character over to Galar and spend a few days with her at her estate to cheer him up after losing his dear Pokémon. She’s a gardener by trade and a Pokémon botanist as her occupation. So much so that she built a huge greenhouse and personal lab which acts as a wildlife sanctuary for various types of Pokémon (notably Grass type Pokémon).

As she greets the main character’s arrival, she’s accomaccompanied by her two main Pokémon companions. Coiled up around a tree is one of her strongest Pokémon; Serperior (Royal Pokémon). And on her right is the Grass type Eeveelution; Leafeon (Verdant Pokémon). Both are pure Grass types and both are some of the oldest Pokémon that Katia has raised since her childhood years. The Bulbasaur (Seed Pokémon) was found abandoned and alone until she found him and took em to the greenhouse sanctuary. The Bulbasaur was eventually gifted to Jonny by Katia and was given the name Malus (named after the apple genus), but the main character will have to battle her first to see if he’s capable of raising him."

A startling new discovery has rocked both the botany and marine biology communities – a new species of coconut has been discovered growing underwater around the remote island archipelago of Nullepartia!

For centuries, sailors’ folklore has told of a mysterious coconut-like fruit that floats from the bottom of the Indian Ocean. In 17th century Europe, this enigmatic seed prized in cabinets of curiosities and dubbed “La Noix de La Sirene”. No specimens of the seed have survived into the 21st century, leading many historians and botanists to conclude the "Mermaid's Coconut" was a legend… until now!

The uninhabited volcanic islands of Nullepartia were claimed by France in the late 18th century, but their obscure location far from trade routes and lack of natural resources meant few people have ever travelled there. In early 2024 an intrepid team of scientists led by Dr. Philippe Faux and professional adventurer Miguel La Variel tracked down the true origin of La Noix de La Sirene. According to the team’s reports, the beaches of Nullepartia are littered with the heart-shaped coconuts and more were floating ashore. The team’s scuba divers discovered palm-like plants bearing the distinctive seeds growing underwater on the reefs around the islands. However, the dive team may be suffering from hallucinations becasue they reported half-fish, half-human beings armed with spears chasing them away from the palm grove. The scientific community is anxiously awaiting the next report, but strangely the team has gone silent since their last dive to collect specimens of La Noix de La Sirene…

This fake news story was inspired by the real plant Lodoicea maldivica, an endemic Seychelles palm species aka the "Coco de Mer". This species has the largest naturally occurring fruit, weighing up to 36 kg and taking 8 years to mature. Since its biological origin remained unknown until 1743, the seed was the inspiration for many myths like the fictional story above!

The heroes and villains of the anime Vision of Escaflowne are ready to do battle for the fate of Gaea!

The featured artwork is a picture from the Escaflowne doujinshi "Kurenai Tenshi" depicting the elegant Allen Schezar, the steadfast Gaddes, and the scrappy Van Fanel as well as their enemies the iconic transman Dilandau Albatou and the Gigachad Miguel La Variel.

Happy Easter! I hope you and yours have a joyful day. For me, Easter is a celebration of springtime and a way to "welcome" the new season by putting up decorations, making special foods like devilled eggs and hot cross buns, and having an Easter egg hunt.

This game is surprisingly good for for grown ups as well as kids! In my version of the game, I write poems and put each line of the poem in an egg on a slip of paper. Each hunter has 1-2 egg colours assigned to them, and they have to scour the garden to find all their eggs. When the hunters return to the cottage, they open their eggs and assemble the poem so they can read it out loud.

Saint Seiya was one of my favourite anime back when I was an excitable teen! All the LGBTQ fanstuff is not out of character with Ancient Greek culture and mythology.

if I have to explain saint seiya to someone that never watched or read it I usually just say "magical girl anime but with pretty boys instead who use the power of homosexuality to defeat their enemies with some greek mythology mixed in" thats it. thats the entire series. and its beautiful.

I noticed this too! I love Shiryu's character design as well as his kind and noble personality. I like how Yasha looks and in my mind's eye, I "cast" him as Kull of Atlantis, King of Valusia, whenever I'm reading one of Robert E Howard's Kull stories. Yasha was an enigmatic character and difficult to understand at times, but he certainly was elegant looking!
