60 years ago today, on October 17th 1961, Mick and Keith met again at the Dartford train station.
I met Mick Jagger on the train station at Dartford in 1961.
Did we hit it off? You get in a carriage with a guy that’s got Rockin’ at the Hops by Chuck Berry on Chess Records, and The Best of Muddy Waters also under his arm, you are gonna hit it off.
He’s got Henry Morgan’s treasure. It’s the real shit. I had no idea how to get hold of that. I realize now I’d met him once before outside Dartford Town Hall when he was selling ice creams for a summer job. He must have been about fifteen, just before he left school, about three years before we actually started the Stones, because he just happened to mention that he occasionally did a dance around there doing Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran stuff. It just clicked in my mind that day. I bought a choc ice. I don’t know, it might have been a cornet. I plead the statute of limitations. And then I didn’t see him again until the fateful day on the train.
And he was carrying this stuff. “Where the hell did you get this?” It was, always, all about records. From when I was eleven or twelve years old, it was who had the records who you hung with. They were precious things. I was lucky to get two or three singles every six months or something. And he said, “Well, I got this address.” He was already writing off to Chicago, and funnily enough to Marshall Chess, who had a summer job with his dad in the mail room there, and who later became the president of Rolling Stones Records. It was a mail-order thing, like Sears, Roebuck. He’d seen this catalogue, which I had never seen. And we just started talking.
He was still singing in a little band, doing Buddy Holly stuff, apparently. I’d never heard about any of that. I said, “Well, I play a little.” I said, “Come on round, play some other stuff.” I almost forgot to get off at Sidcup because I was still copying down the matrix numbers of the Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records he happened to have with him. Rockin’ at the Hops: Chess Records CHD-9259.
- Keith, in his book 'Life' about meeting Mick at the train station.
He also mentioned the meeting in a letter to his aunt a few months later:
Anyways the guy on the station, he is called Mick Jagger and all the chicks and the boys meet every Saturday morning in the ‘Carousel’ some juke-joint well one morning in Jan I was walking past and decided to look him up. Everybody’s all over me I get invited to about 10 parties. Beside that Mick is the greatest R&B singer this side of the Atlantic and I don’t mean maybe.

During one of the shows the Stones played in Amsterdam in 1995 for their Totally Stripped live record, Mick introduced everyone on stage and got from Ronnie to Keith without mentioning Charlie. He forgot about Charlie, but the fans started chanting his name so loudly and went absolutely crazy for Charlie, so Mick noticed his mistake and made sure Charlie got an extra round of applause, as he deserves.
Charlie always has been the quiet one of the Stones, always staying in the background, hating the limelight. He said that he doesn't want to be a rockstar, he just wants to play the drums and he just happens to play the drums with the Stones, the greatest band in the world.
But apart from being quiet and hating attention, Charlie sadly also always has been good at talking himself small, as if his contribution to the Stones didn't matter. But it was all that mattered.
Back in the early 60s, when they just started out, Charlie was one of the hottest drummers in town, everybody wanted him, barely anybody could pay him, the Stones couldn't really, either. So according to Keith they basically starved themselves and started shoplifting in order to be able to get Charlie. And ever since then he has been stuck with them for good.
Charlie was the heartbeat of the Stones, he was so much more important and so much more precious than he probably ever believed himself. He was one of the greatest drummers of all time, but above all, he was a wonderful, humourous, brilliant person who actually managed to stick with these other idiots for 59 years.
Charlie will always be missed and never be forgotten.

If today teaches you one lesson, let it be this.
Find someone who loves you the way Keith Richards loves Charlie Watts and be vocal about it the way he was.
Keith never missed an opportunity to say how much he adored him as a personal and a professional partner. Even though Charlie didn't think he deserved the praise, he always, always knew he was loved.
“She didn’t mind at all that both Mick and Keith gave Charlie a goodnight kiss on the mouth.”-Philip Norman, “Mick Jagger” (2012)
