while i’m tempted to explicate the entirety of the too much birthday argument i’ve managed to restrain myself to just one line- roman’s saying “i guess that’s because he loves me. he loves fucking me and he just doesn’t wanna fuck you anymore” is just.. so fucked up on so many levels and it’s reflective of multiple levels of issues going on.

the first most obvious level is the enmeshment and total lack of boundaries that the roys have. they are all conscious of and talk freely about each others sex lives in a way that makes them all uncomfortable at different points, but they keep coming back to it because their lives are all entirely tied up in their family name which is the family business which is the actual family so all aspects of their lives are on the table to be picked apart in their mad scramble to control the company.

while delivering it in.. a deeply disturbing manner… roman is also making a good point about the way that logan operates. logans sex life is intimately tied up in the way that he does business. marcia is close at hand guiding him in decisions in season 1, but when rhea comes into the picture and he starts going out with her, marcia gets cut out. then in season 3 as he starts fucking his assistant, kerry gets more and more input into waystar’s decision making. and shiv herself repeatedly gets sidelined for these women that logan is having sex with. so roman identifying being let in on deals as being fucked is… kind of accurate.

then there’s also the level of the difference between roman and shiv on what counts as winning. in successions language there’s fucking and being fucked, strict winners and losers when it comes to sex and business. when shiv and kendall are put up as logan’s number 2 they both want to take the company in completely new and independent directions, want to be someone that wrests control and shows up their father. roman, on the other hand, is perfectly fine just being logan’s messenger boy if it means being close to logan. he doesn’t care that he’s being fucked in this scenario because he’s getting attention and focus and that’s winning to him.

what’s interesting about shiv’s disgusted reaction to roman here is that what he actually says is not out of line for him. in the summer palace, roman describes kendall as “a sex robot for dad to fuck” the difference between that line and this one is that roman is talking like being fucked and used is a good thing for him, while before, for kendall, it was clearly about how kendall is in this horrible cage serving logan. the difference between roman and shiv is not just in how they want to win with logan but also in how they relate to sex in general. shiv wants a husband she is certain she can control and roman wants a woman to dom him and tell him what to do. shiv wants to do the fucking and roman wants to be fucked and neither can understand the other in that respect

there’s even more about roman’s fucked up psychology that this line suggests. in the context of succession where being fucked is just losing or being fucked over, roman directly relates being fucked by his father to being loved by him. he’s the perfect inverse of logans kicking the dog to see if it still comes back. roman has been so trained by logan to see taking the pain and staying no matter what as love that he can delight in saying that dad’s fucking him because that to him means that his dad loves him

finally and most chillingly this is another line that suggests roman is a survivor of some sort of csa. while i don’t believe that roman was talking literally here in any sense, this line is another example of roman relating things in his life back to incest and sexual assault when it does not necessarily make sense to do so.

essentially, this line is perfectly written to touch on issues of sex, family, and trauma and make me as miserable as possible in the way only succession can

Today while resting off a fever I listened to Jeremy Strong’s episode of the Succession podcast in which he cites Penderecki’s composition “Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima” as music to get into Kendall’s headspace, so of course I listened to it and the sheer amount of psychic damage it instantly caused made me laugh so hard my fever broke and I feel like 70% better
