Phillip Phillips wants out of his ‘American Idol’ contract
After winning the 11th season of American Idol, Phillip Phillips has released two albums and put out several hits… and while he’s grateful for the opportunities he’s had thanks to the show, he’s had enough of the controlling contract he’s signed into since winning the show.
He says, “The value that the fans and the show have given to my career is not lost on me. However, I have not felt that I have been free to conduct my career in a way that I am comfortable with. I look forward to being able to make my own choices about my career and to being able to make great music and play it for my fans.”
Phillips has been asked to play shows for free, and has never been given the opportunity to re-negotiate his contract as his career has grown.

Tom Petty to be paid royalties for Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me”
When Sam Smith’s ballad “Stay With Me” came out last April, many noticed similarities to Tom Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down”–including Tom Petty himself and his lawyers. Smith and Petty settled out of court last October but details of the settlement were discovered this weekend. This includes a 12.5% writing credit to both Petty and Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra.
“Stay With Me”’s credit on the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers has been updated to list Petty and Lynne in addition to Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes (of Disclosure) as the songwriters.
Do you think these songs sound similar? Listen for yourself below:
