It’s been three days, five hours and thirty-five minutes since Luka stepped into the Wæfrewald woods.

He trudges along the hiking trail, sweat beading on the back of his neck and his jaw clenched as he tries to discern where he is on his map for the third time today. 

The clerk who sold him this yellowed, frankly useless map was so sure that he’d find his way out in the woods— but it’s not the map’s fault that Luka didn’t bother to take the gentle advice given to him out here.

It’s not the map’s fault that he was warned first by the store clerk, second by a warden, and then by a stranger that the woods would turn him around. It’s not the map’s fault that he’s so sure of himself. It’s not the map’s fault that he’s only out here to prove that he isn’t ambitionless after all.

He’s haunted by Olcan, like he often is, as he almost crumples the map between his hands in a fit of frustration.

The sun beats on the back of his neck, but he doesn’t stop to get his sunscreen out of his backpack.

He fishes around his pocket once he’s put the map away, tugging his notepad loose to jot down how arbitrary it is to reapply sunscreen when he never gets sunburn— maybe that will simmer into a profound anecdote between the pages whilst he makes his way to the Teeth.

The skin on the back of his neck is starting to burn.

“What’d you do?”

Beck’s eyes fix on his— rabbit in headlights— as she’s drawing a heavy, deep mouthful from her mug. White coffee, one sugar. She doesn’t have sugar unless Ozias makes it for her. He makes it with more milk too, but she doesn’t complain. Why would she? Her dad used to make any drink for her with two sugars and full-fat milk when they had it. 

The thought evaporates as the question registers— she aligns into her body with all of the reluctance of a child avoiding bedtime.

Her eyes lower as she swallows. The mug goes down. For a moment she stares at her food, radiating shame, still holding onto the ceramic handle with idle fingers. Her fork sags in her other hand, resting against the plate lip as she considers lying.

Lying won’t work on Ozias like it works on everybody else; he commits cardinal sin by caring about her welfare. About her. It’s alien, strange. It’s universally uncomfortable but she doesn’t know what she’d do without him.

“I touched it.”

I’m in love with your style, the old VHS aesthetics, the graphic design, and the attention to detail. It all feels so cozy. I can imagine this as the look of a 90s indie horror/mystery game. I’m just here staring in admiration.

Aaaa thank you sm 😁 That analog horror/mystery is exactly the energy I've always sat in; going digital really opened up a world of art vibes for me. The CYOAs and game/found footage for narratives all come from that root in those old CRT screens and tracking lines. Give us the film grain and the clunky buttons. Give us the camcorder and the cassette tapes 🙌
