Why I became OBSESSED with Lawbin after this:

I just got to this in my rewatch, and I have more thoughts again:

First of all, let me say that this moment was spoiled for me. I wasn't even on optwitter or tumblr at the time. I can't even remember how I came across the spoilers. I just remember someone had written an article on the spoilers, and I came across it somehow. I don't think the site the article was written in was even a One Piece site. I think someone must've put them there for the time being to avoid trouble and then they must've taken it down. Also, I remember I read these spoilers on the third anniversary of my end of undergraduate recital, which was on November 19th. I always remembered that date as my recital day because I was just glad to get that over with. Now, I remember it as recital day but also Lawbin day! I was also house hunting at the time, so it was a wild time for me, but I made SURE to make time for the brainrot that would ensue.

My first thought when reading the spoilers was "FINALLY!" I have said before that I started to see the true potential for lawbin after Dressrosa when Robin was ready to die protecting Law. This is when I feel like they went from just looking hot together to actually having potential for a good relationship. At this point though, I had just gotten to a place where I finally accepted that Zorobin was never going to get anywhere, and I was a little crushed by the Frobin in chapter 979 (where I caught up btw) and the color spread where Robin is affectionately touching Franky's face. However, I will say that I had also seen Stampede at this point, so I had seen the princess carry. It was great Lawbin fuel, but I was thinking, "Alright, there's Lawbin in a movie, and Toei added that one extra scene for them at the end of Dressrosa, but moment from Oda's hand when?" So when I was reading the spoilers, and when the chapter finally came out, I was like "YAAAAAAASSSS!!!!" It was such a good moment for them too. Short and sweet, but very strong. I read the spoilers, I looked through the raws, I read the scanlation, and I read the official multiple times.

Let me go panel by panel here. First, with this panel, what struck me was just HOW beautiful Robin's face looks here. In the previous page, you have Law slicing through one of the beast pirates, remembering what Corazon told him about the D, and then we hear that he tells someone is true name. Again, I knew it would be Robin because of the spoilers, but when I flipped the page, I was still surprised because she looked SO beautiful. Robin is always beautiful, but it is so detailed here. It's the way her hair is shining with one big strand and one little strand framing her face, the way her eyebrows scrunch a bit in shock, her eyelashes are all present (and it looks like she might even be wearing some mascara and maybe even eyeliner), her eyes themselves look huge and Law remembers everything about them (the pupils, iris, the eyelid, the little wings of what is possibly her eyeliner, or maybe just part of her eyelid? etc), her nose looks cute, and finally... her mouth that is open in what was probably a gasp in surprise at Law's revelation. Her response IS one of surprise. There is also nothing in the background behind her, so Law's focus was completely on her and her reaction in that moment.

They're really small in this panel, but their conversation is what's important here. The first bubble has been translated differently, but the point of it is that he is ONLY telling ROBIN because he TRUSTS her. That is big coming from Law because we know from his backstory that he has trust issues (Vergo being the biggest example). Where did this trust for Robin come from, then? It could not have been sudden, especially not for someone like Law, who frequently denies that the straw hats are his friends. He's also telling her his full name and not just that he's a D like he did with Sengoku and Doflamingo, and he's telling her completely unprompted. Robin is not asking him, and this is not like the dare he made when he told Baby 5 and Buffalo. There had to have been some build up to this, and I have a feeling it happened on the Polar Tang en route to Wano. It would have been the perfect time. The fact that they may have been talking this entire time really sent my delulu into overdrive, y'all. Robin thanks him for his trust but tells him that she does not know much herself. She also tells him that she would like to know, even though Luffy doesn't care, and it almost feel like she's about to ask him to work together before Law cuts in with his question about the red poneglyphs. I feel like Law probably knew that's where she was headed but stopped her because they are in different crews. In the English dub, she straight up says they could work together, and Matt Mercer (Law) actually softens his voice when he responds to her with his question about following the red stones. This was also after the INTENSE lip focus that Toei did between them. That was hot, Toei, thank you! I would also like to point out that Law puts his big scary sword behind him because he's in the presence of a lady, and it's a lady that he trusts. His bear shirt is also cute, and I think Robin probably loved it as well.

Here, Robin answers Law's question. Yes, they have to follow the red poneglyphs, and that means beating the yonko. If Robin wanted to propose working together before, she lets it go here. I think Robin would be understanding of Law's position as a captain. In any case, what I LOVED about this panel was Robin's smile. I remember seeing someone on Reddit say, "Ah... A Robin smile, a precious gift." This gift comes to us courtesy of none other than Law, and it is such a pretty smile with all the detail I mentioned before present again. The ruins of the castle are kind of blurry behind her, so she is his main focus again, and I just love that the last thing he remembers is her smile. I also mentioned in my rewatch post yesterday that I just love how, in both panels where Robin is the sole focus, he is clearly looking at her face and nothing else while she speaks. Trust AND Respect?! If that is not a good foundation for a ship, then I don't know what is. I know Toei does focus on her legs and cleavage some, but that is Toei. They love boobs. This is Law, and he is looking where he should be looking like a true gentleman. What more could I want for my Queen Robin?

Law takes what Robin says to heart because here he is looking for a red poneglyph, and we know that he echoes her words later when he's fighting Big Mom, and at the end of it all he goes looking for her when he doesn't see her at the party. I do hope he told her about this poneglyph at some point because, even though it's not red, we know that Robin cares about ALL poneglyphs. This is not the one that HE wants, but SHE does, so I am hoping he did right by her. This is the moment when I fully turned my attention to Lawbin, and I have not looked back since. I was shocked by it all... the trust but also the beauty. Oda drawing Robin so beautifully from Law's perspective was so shocking to me because Oda doesn't do a lot of romance, and he definitely avoids it with the straw hats as much as possible. To me, something as small as this 1 or 2 page moment, feels like a bold move from Oda. Their follow up moment in chapter 1055 felt like a step up in boldness. I really hope we get more when Law comes back into the story. To Oda we pray.

One Piece Rewatch Episodes 1006-1010

TODAY IS THE DAY!!!! There WILL be lawbin delusions at the bottom of this post. If you don't ship it, just stop reading when you get to the last paragraph.

Shinobu tells Yamato to seek help and tricks him into going off course. Bao Huang watches and tells King, who makes an announcement and directs everyone to find Momo and kill him. Sasaki is the one to find them, and he starts shooting and attacking so much that I actually felt bad for Shinobu. Yamato comes in for the save, still talking about being Oden, but we'll take it. Queen is still firing the plague rounds, and we see that he's also shooting the Pleasures. Luffy, Jimbei, and Sanji are running through the castle, and most people are noticing Luffy and Jimbei. Poor Sanji. He's like, am I chopped liver or something? Back on the rooftop, we see Kiku's arm fall behind her body, and Toei actually had the nerve to make one of the fingers twitch. Damn, Toei. Savage. Once Kiku is back up, Kaido starts to commend the scabbards for living boldly like Roger and Whitebeard. He reminisces and says that they did it right in dying the way they did because now their tales will be passed on for generations to come. This is when we get his "death completes a man" quote.

The episode starts with Chopper getting mad at Queen for shooting his own allies and Queen doing a victory dance. Hyogoro tells Omasa to have faith in Chopper and tells him about Chopper curing the prisoners in Udon. Queen spots Apoo and says he'll use him for a grand finale. Chopper is thinking of getting the antibody from Queen somehow to make a cure. Apoo starts trying to run away from the virus, so Queen throws him the antibody and sends everybody after him. This is one of those plot points that served to slow down the pacing of Wano, but I do think it was necessary for Chopper. We go back to Momonosuke, Yamato, and Shinobu. Yamato tells Shinobu that he was at Oden's execution and was inspired by Oden. That's great. Now, you have to realize that you can be inspired by someone without wanting to BE them. You can still be yourself while being inspired by someone. At this point, it's a bit reminiscent of little Deku dressing up like All Might for his mom and saying, "I'm All Might!"

The episode starts with Marco vs. Big Mom. Y'all... my man is doing so well against a Yonko. Even when she uses Prometheus, Marco's phoenix flames are much hotter and burn Prometheus. Marco says that Phoenix flames are a special breed, which I think is true because he was defending against Akainu back in Marineford when Ace just got straight up ran through. The fire has regenerative powers, which Marco uses to heal people, but the fire probably also regenerates ITSELF. He tells Big Mom that her era is over, so Big Mom gets mad and catches him. Then, it gets unfair because she tells Perospero to shoot him. It's a 2v1 now. Somebody needs to come and save my man. We also get Brook getting shot with the virus, which was hilarious because Brook is being all dramatic, but nothing is happening. He realizes that the virus can't affect him because he's a skeleton. His body can't freeze, and there are no organs for the virus to spread onto. This helps Chopper start to think about how the virus works, which is good because he just got shot himself. Poor Robin looked terrified for her baby. We also see Page One and Ulti vs. Usopp and Nami. Needless to say, our side is getting slaughtered and mostly by Ulti. Page One is only intervening here and there. Ulti grabs Nami and demands that she take back Luffy's promise to be King of the Pirates. Nami thinks back to when she first met Luffy and to Arlong Park and is unable to say it. The panel of her crying and saying that Luffy WILL be King of the Pirates was so beautiful in the manga. This is also when Tama comes in with Komachiyo, and he chomps on Ulti's head to let go of Nami. We love Tama.

The episode starts with Carrot and Wanda heading over to Marco, Big Mom, and Perospero. Hold on... they gotta cry about Pedro first. Y'all need to hurry up and save my man! Finally, they change into their Sulong forms, which look amazing by the way and attack Perospero. His reaction is always funny to me. "That idiot blew himself up!" It's funny because he's not wrong, and the straw hats went into THEIR territory knowing that it was Yonko territory. Anyway... Big Mom throws Marco like a discarded toy. What a bitch. That's my ensure right there. She better treat him right. Now that I think about it, Big Mom fought both my ensure and my colágeno (Law). The bitch needed to be stopped. After Marco is shown going after her, we go back to Nami and Usopp, and it is now Nami's turn to troll Usopp by faking his voice from behind him, baiting Ulti and Page One. The voice actress for Nami has talked about how much fun she had doing the Usopp impression, and it was funny. When they finally land on Komachiyo, she pretty much says... too bad you got beat up, but I'm good, so we're all good, right? We go to Momo, Yamato, and Shinobu again and see that Yamato is doing pretty well against Sasaki before Franky shows up. I find it funny how Yamato also fanboys over Franky Shogun, and Hacchan chases him down like a lost toy. Yamato takes Momo away and tells him about how he'll bring about the dawn in Wano.

THIS IS IT!!! The episode starts with Law remembering Corazon, like we need to be traumatized again. He slices through a bunch of Beast Pirates like a boss and stops in front of a blue poneglyph. I love how he puts his hand on it the same way Robin would. Then, we get the flashback that tells us Law and Robin have been having their own little secret conversations. When did these conversations start? I have a feeling it was on the Polar Tang en route to Wano. He tells her his real name, his FULL name, might I add. All he said to Sengoku and Doflamingo was that he was a D. He also says it unprompted. Robin was not asking for it, unlike when he told Baby 5 and Buffalo. Here's why this is important. We know Law has trust issues from his backstory (Vergo being a big example), yet he's over here telling Robin his FULL name completely unprompted, off his own free will, and then he tells her that he TRUSTS her?!? This is huge coming from Law. He's pretty much saying that he's telling HER specifically because he trusts her. He's not telling anyone else. This not only shows the trusting relationship building between them, but it also shows a certain amount of intimacy building up between them. Here, in the anime, I think they try to show that with the emphasis on their lips, showing that they were super focused on each other in that moment. This is from Law's POV, so we at least know HE was at least focused on her for sure. Oda shows this in the manga with the way that he draws Robin from Law's perspective. Not only does she look stunning, but Law seems to remember every detail. All her lashes are present. Then, there's also the fact that he mostly remembers her face. The anime emphasizes her legs and cleavage a lot, but that's not what Law is shown remembering in the manga. He remembers her face because that's where he was looking as she was speaking like a TRUE GENTLEMAN. Claps for him 👏 👏 👏 I have said before that I think Law is a gentleman because of his upbringing, and here is what I mean by that. His father was shown to be the perfect father and the perfect husband, a complete gentleman to his mom. His mother was also shown to be a lady, and Law remembers her being kind in his first novel. Surely, he had his dose of respect women juice. Then, in the first chapter of his second novel, he's shown remembering his sister fondly too. We know he was super sweet to her as a big brother. Anyway... Robin is shocked to learn that he's a D but recovers quickly and thanks him for his trust. She tells him she doesn't know much either and that Luffy doesn't care. In the dub, she straight up offers to work together. In the manga, it's implied that she was getting to that before Law interrupted her, asking if they just had to follow the red stones. Law probably did this because they're in different crews, and we have seen this weighing heavily on his mind throughout his journey with the straw hats. I have to say though... Matt Mercer softens his voice here when asking about following the red stones, and it just melts me every single time 😍 Robin seems to understand Law's plight as a captain because she just gently replies that yes, they have to follow the red stones, which means beating the emperors. I love how Law's last memory of Robin here is of her smiling. ❤️ We know that he does take what she says to heart because here he is looking for a red stone, then later he echoes her words when fighting Big Mom, and even later, he goes looking for her instead of staying at the party. I do hope he told her about this poneglyph because even though it's not the red one HE needs, we know that Robin cares about ALL poneglyphs. He declares his desire to learn about the will of D. Shipping aside, I was really happy for Law finding a new purpose here. Before this, it felt like he was just going along with Luffy to uphold his end of the bargain. Now, he has something to continue living for. I'm going to have to make a separate post for this like I did back in Dressrosa because I have more thoughts, but this is already quite long.
