i think the fact that all of abigail’s parallels point towards her being the embodiment of will’s own dark urges (and how she only became a huge part of his life after he opened up that gateway to his becoming [killing hobbs]) yet she still feels the safest with hannibal is something i really like to think about.
like abigail came into her own easily. she gutted nichols without hesitation. she didn’t even think about it. going along with hannibal’s plan to criminalize will for her death (which could be viewed as a DIRECT parallel to when will refuses to intervene with hannibal’s ploy to get chilton arrested). abigail forcing herself into isolation to keep herself safe with hannibal at the same time will was in jail.
yet somehow both versions of will - and by extension the only version of abigail - are drawn to hannibal. both comfort and horror is found there, by both people — and when abigail dies and leaves both halves of will to deal with hannibal, that same fate is sealed for him.
will and abigail are mirrors in the sense that their similarities are what ends up being their dividing point, i think, and i think that’s shown in how the abigail of will’s mind palace would still go with hannibal. i think that’s why the embodiment of will’s self beyond the curtains he presented to the world was abigail — theyre so similar that the thought of finding the parts of himself that he villainized (in himself) in her wasn’t actually concerning. he knew what she was capable of, and what she’d done, but he’d still loved her (and missed her, as seen in his reaction to seeing her again).
also ??? the parallel of abigail being prepared for her funeral / will fighting for his life (being brought back from the brink of death)???
i think abigail’s death played an integral part in his becoming because it was the death of a dividend — removing a part of the equation that he couldn’t identify without identifying himself.

oh my god what the fuck.
sorry, can’t let things die. more abigail hobbs posting. (sort of inspired by @bloodaria and their post this morning? it’s referenced at least)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
look at these three gifs. i know that the will and abigail one wasn’t actually real, but LOOK AT THE BODY LANGUAGE.
abigail is struggling against garret. she’s fighting for her life. she knew he was going to kill her. she had always known that. from the moment she had started helping her father target girls, from the moment she realized just how similar they were to her, she knew she was going to die. the way garret tries to cut her throat is quick and meant to finish the job quickly. despite being the one to kill her, garret didn’t want her to be in pain. he wanted her to go quickly.
the way will ‘kills’ her is the exact same way. he’s holding abigail the exact same way that garret was, down to pinning the same arm to her body and the way his cut is quick and broad - his arm swings the same way garret’s did, uninhibited by gunshots. will knew he was going to end up killing her and she wanted her to go the same way garret had wanted her to.
but hannibal’s method is completely different. his is slow, precise. methodical. he doesn’t restrain her and she doesn’t fight him off. he digs the blade in and he drags it across her scar - he doesn’t slit her throat, or go for any artery, he reopens the wound. it’s breaking the teacup that has come back together.
it’s slow because it’s a punishment. it’s not a mercy killing, it’s not getting rid of abigail so that the fbi don’t get to her. abigail didn’t think for a second that hannibal would kill her. she trusted him, more than she trusted her own father and more than will thought she trusted him. she handed him the knife to finish the job - the same way she had broken her tea cup when she had that drugged tea with hannibal, she’s breaking the teacup herself. just under hannibal’s influence.

“i can feed the caterpillar, i can whisper through the chrysalis, but when it hatches, it follows its own nature and that is beyond me” okay so i need to see every single analysis that compares this line to how hannibal guides will into his becoming (“feeding” his encephalitis and his more twisted thoughts, speaking through the curtains to appeal to the darker parts of him) and how will has always instinctually known what fate laid ahead of him

i have too many brain worms to actually make this make sense (i’ll reblog this with a fully fleshed analysis the next time i feel like being a human) but im thinking about the scene where abigail asks if they’re going to reenact the crime scene.
[to alana] “you be my mom” [to will] “you be my dad” [to hannibal] “and you be the man on the phone”.
i know this is abigail telling hannibal she knows who he was at the time of her parents’ deaths, but it also set up the reverse for mizumono.
will being the man on the phone, hannibal being her “father”, and alana being, in this instance, will (or who will was acting as when he arrived at the hobbs’ house).
which leaves abigail to act as mrs. hobbs — her mother — the woman killed before garret tried to kill abigail.
if you really want to get into the funky brain fuckery, that leaves will to shed his role as the man on the phone and take abigail’s role as the survivor- the one injured by the predator but ultimately surviving with the predator’s scar to bear. both abigail (in aperitif) and will (in mizumono) were killed out of love / fear by their respective would-be-killers.
it also serves to further sharpen the lines between hannibal and garret. if there were any doubts in will’s mind before about what he was to hannibal (probably wasn’t, given they were going to run away together), taking garret’s role and attempting to kill will for the sheer reason of keeping him out of prison and unquestioned about hannibal (and now, by extension, his involvement with abigail hobbs) wiped it out of his mind.
ough. brain worms are restless so im so sorry if this doesn’t make sense but there’s something here. ive just gotta find it.

now. i know what you're thinking. i know. "kallie oh my god let this quote die". but no. because i've had yet another thought.
"achilles, lamenting the death of patroclus. whenever he’s mentioned in the iliad, patroclus seems to be defined by his empathy."
"he became achilles on the field of war. he died for him there, wearing his armor."
i think by now we've all already seen the posts or recognized that hannibal and will have swapped clothes for the battle between them and dolarhyde. if not, here's a nifty little visual (2x13 mizumono, 3x10 ...and the woman clothed in the sun)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and if you're like me, you'd think "oh that's really sweet. he's wearing hannibal's shirt. it shows their lines beginning to blur". but you know what else it shows?
"[...] he died for him there, wearing his armor."
will went into war (the fight against dolarhyde) wearing hannibal's armor, and he (presumably) died there. he died in hannibal's armor, as patroclus died in achilles'.
and even THEN.
"he did. hiding and revealing identity is a constant theme throughout the greek epics."
"as are battle-tested friendships."
where will embraces his becoming, and steps into himself - where he casts off the persona of the man he'd been displaying and reveals who he really is underneath, which is a very constant theme throughout hannibal and will's relationship ― the battle to see each other, to understand.
"achilles wished all greeks would die, so that he and patroclus could conquer troy alone. took divine intervention to bring them down."
if you know me then you know, of course, i love love love the religious symbolism that hannibal is drenched in. and i think it's a very lovely parallel to the fact that hannibal, who sees himself as above but so intertwined with religion, and views will as his god, went to his death with the very man he worshipped.
you know. divine intervention.

honestly im thinking about how hannibal is a firm believer in god but like he also doesnt really say which god. which is soooo funny to me because he sure as hell isnt catholic / christian, because he knows of and follows the teachings of (not in a religious sense, but in the sense that one might follow the news or whatever) other religion’s gods. but in that same vein, he’s also self-identified as a monotheist, so he places his faith in only one higher power, but still recognizes and indulges other deities and religions. he’s sort of accepted and delved really deeply into multiple branches of organized (and unorganized) religion spanning over many different cultures and yet its still unclear which religion he really does follow. he’s made himself above religion while functioning within the inner gears of religion, if that makes sense ??? like he’s set himself on a pedestal that is above the other religions while still relying on those religions to hold his stand up. something something the ripper likes playing his own god.

i think people misinterpret what i mean when i say will is hannibal's god. we know hannibal is a religious man in the sense that he believes in gods, but does not pray to them.
he has intimate knowledge of them, and believes there could be multiple (as shown by his belief in both christian god and in greek mythos), but he doesn't pray, nor show his religion at all. he is a follower with nothing to follow.
he doesn't like playing god with his kills, not at all. he defies him, even, in that regard. so he doesn't believe himself to be god (though there's a certain god complex that comes with being a surgeon).
and he doesn't believe god to be something overarching and narcissistic — he doesn't believe that god sits in wait and watches violence. his god delivers justice and karma, he believes that he has an itch in his palm to destroy those who are unworthy of the life they've been granted (which, of course, is deliciously reminiscent of how hannibal cannibalizes the 'rude'— those he believes have tarnished the life they've been given).
will does that; at first, by his profiling — when he kills hobbs, when he shoots stammetts, even when he showed no hesitation in trying (twice) to shoot hannibal; then after his becoming, when he has no problem tearing into dolarhyde.
i think that's what attracts hannibal to him — he's blunt (not rude, but that's a subject for a whole different post), he's clever, and he's always had the same urges that hannibal has, boiling just beyond the curtains. he wants people to pay for what they do — and it is not biased in the fact that he tries to make hannibal pay before he understands why he does what he does. he, in hannibal's eyes, is the perfect god — swift, unbiased, and angry (hence his illusion to achilles' anger; the halfgod who could not be bested in battle).
will isn't hannibal's god in the sense of "you are the best, you are the greatest and no one can befell you and you are invincible". he's his god in the sense of "you are the personification of my ideals, you are human but divine in the sense that you may be felled, but you do not go down easily, i love you and worship you for that alone".
he doesn't believe that will is better than anyone, or entirely godly — he believes he embraces his human nature and is still powerful.
