Last week, our daughter came home from UGA to early vote... this morning her ailing 81 year old grandfather walked alone to the polls in Harlem. She recalls his stories of living under Jim Crow, jumping out of airplanes, fighting in Vietnam then being told he had to sit at the back of a bus...Years later moving to NYC and taking her mother —who was in elementary school at the time—with him to the polls near Drew Hamilton Houses. She knows the value of her voice so she helped a local candidate in Athens, GA get out the vote by knocking on doors in some of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Georgia. She said it was a humbling experience because she met and was invited in the home of a woman who was over 100 yrs old who planned to walk to her local library to vote today. Our lead designer took her 12 grade students on a field trip to the polls to early vote because she recalls the stories and will never forget the power of one voice in action to make and continue concerted change. We thank all our youth for their ability to go beyond the talk, negative feedback that dismisses voting and to take action to have their voices heard in local and state elections. They truly are our future and their own futures. This is only a step but a MAJOR one that millions wish they could take. If voting wasn’t important why have so many died to get the power to vote? Why are (were) so many laws enacted to block voting rights?
