"When a man is born, he is soft and flexible. When he dies, he is strong and hard. When a tree grows, it is soft and flexible. But when it's dry and hard, it dies. Hardness and strength are death's companions. Flexibility and softness are the embodiment of life. That which has become hard shall not triumph."

it goes against so much of what i stand for to share "palestinians are humans, they have hobbies, they have pets, they laugh and cry" kind of posts because i've spent so much of my life and career completely rejecting the notion that we should humanize ourselves, that we should ever be defensive, that we should entertain this racism at all
but it breaks my heart when i have to share them from people in gaza, who are using their five minutes of internet connection, their 25% of battery charge collected from a macguyvered car battery, emotionally exhausted, thirsty and hungry, sleeping in schools that have turned into refugee shelters and still making the time to say "please, i am human too, i am still alive, please fight for me" in english to appeal to the only people who have the power to help
i shared a tweet from a jjk artist in gaza i follow about a bts photocard being found in the middle of the rubble. even the love of anime and kpop and sports is no longer just a hobby, but an appeal to humanity. what was once a source of joy is now proof of life.
the worst part is that you won't find this content in arabic. palestinians don't post like this in arabic. but when they translate themselves, they recognize that they must humanize themselves first. it's an unspoken understanding of dehumanization, one that has dictated a whole region's understanding of the value of human life. in arabic they speak with dignity, with anger, with sorrow. in english, they appeal for their existence.
i share these posts not just because we have to reach everyone we can, because im being asked to and i will not refuse. but i also share them because they're evidence of how deep the racism has run. at what dehumanization leads to. of war crime after war crime. this too i will not forget.

life plan: cry about grantaire today. cry about grantaire tomorrow. cry about grantaire every day for the rest of my life. raise sea levels. increase fish population. say hello to all the new fishes. cry about grantaire again.

huh that’s kind of weird! well no time to think about it. i’ve got a big exhausting day ahead of me of doing the specific exact king beyond the wall job description while various wildlings swear fealty to me and give me cute little presents and kiss my little hand. just another normal day in the life of the normal lord commander of the nights watch.

that is so interesting, thank you so much!!
the thing is, this is not Nick's narrative per se, it is Fitzgerald's narrative. Despite Nick being an unreliable narrator, it must have been Fitzgerald's choice to remove the elements mentioned above and keep the story more "simple" in a way. In the story I read, I don't think Jay is Nick's paragon of hope and devotion per se. I think this is how Fitzgerald sees Gatsby and how he wants us to see Gatsby. This is how I saw Gatsby in any case. This draft does not alter Gatsby's theme in the book in my mind, it actually amplifies it, like an a contrario argument : by choosing to not include this scene, I can reasonably assume that the themes Fitzgerald wanted to convey were of a different nature, or to be more exact, that he wanted to put the focus elsewhere. By elsewhere I mean the social aspect. This novel as it turned out was less about introspection and deep psychological/interpersonal conflicts and more about a decaying social structure as a whole. Gatsby is a peculiar individual but in the end of the book he becomes a social archetype. Fitzgerald keeping Jay's motivations and inner conflicts secret and diminishing Nick's role in his demise helps put the focus in this basic dichotomy between idealism/romanticism and cruel reality. This may seem simple to some but I consider it very impactful and timeless.
In any case this was such an interesting read!! This novel truly has so many layers.
"X character didn't truly love Z character, they just loved the idea of them", what does that even mean? Especially when it's used for stories with a very clear-cut, in your face romantic theme/undertone. Like, what does that mean? How does one distinguish the two? Did romeo love the idea of juliet or the real juliet? Did gatsby truly love daisy or did he love the idea of daisy? Who will tell us? Gatsby did lose his life for that woman so why does it actually matter if he loved an "idealized" version of her or the "real her"? Is it really important for the story? Does it actually change anything or is it just a catchphrase? Can you clearly distinguish the people you have loved for what they truly were, from the people you had merely idealized? Even if you can, does this distinction make your feelings for them any less real and intense and impactful for your life? Like I don't care if I loved the idea of someone or the real person, all I care about is what I felt and how it affected me and changed my life. That's what fiction does, it gives you the ability to connect with real, intense, unfiltered human emotions which are an integral part of human experience. Fiction is not therapy. Please stop sanitizing art thank you

How do you do things that you don't want to do but you know that you have to? Like technically, practically, how does that work? What the fuck? Am I going to be like this for the rest of my life or what
