Uchida Yuuma (Sakura Haruka)

Sakura is a pure but naïve character. Since he’s been rejected by others since he was a child and has been alone his whole life, he doesn’t have much experience being with others. I think he was already hurt and broken before his inner self fully developed, so I think he’s a pure character as he still has a lot of room to grow. I think he’s naïve because he didn’t have a choice but to use fighting as a means to prove himself.

For Sakura, being given the position of Class Captain is a new experience for him, and in season two as he fights the enemy and watches his teammates fall one by one, he feels responsible for not being the Captain he thinks he should be and scared that he’s not the Captain that others wanted him to be.

However, everyone still accepts him, and he is able to notice things around him that he didn’t notice before, and they are able to move forward together. Sakura shows a somewhat turtle like progress with three steps forward, and two steps back, but that part is rather human of him.

Note:

1 - "Pure" - Hiragi says this in Chapter 161 as well, how Sakura is a very Pure character, he's so straightfoward, and that makes him worry. Nirei and Suo overhear, and they know very well how true that is.

In Japan, being a "pure" character specifically refers to the character trait is someone who is innocent, "untainted", wholesome, sincere and often naive/doesn't have a lot of experience in the word. This can also mean that they are pure of heart, in that they have morals, discipline and is a overall good person.

Shoya Chiba ( Akihiko Nirei)

Nirei came to Furin because he admires their strength and coolness, and vowed to be Sakura’s guide to the top that he’s aiming for. He’s not strong, but he’s honest and smart, and is the classes mood maker.

He loves collecting and analyzing data from the people he thinks are cool, and he’s a passionate person who isn’t satisfied with being just a support. He’s a powerful character who is usually thought of as a weak fighter, but he takes the next step forward, striving be someone who can be recognized by others as their equal.

Shimazaki Nobunaga (Hayato Suo)

Suo appears to be a cool character, but he’s actually an hot-headed person. When he’s angry or sad, he has a real sense of “youth”. I think it’s good that he is moved by emotions. I thought it was funny to see Suo, who seems so distant in season two, become uncontrollably angry, where he was stopped by a calm Sakura (or he was calmed down by Sakura?)

Sue is a character that could easily be written off as the perfect hero, who is cool and laid-back, but he’s not, and that and that’s what makes him fun to voice.

Nii-Sensei

Q: What are you cognizant of when drawing a "cool guy?"

A: the gap. Just like when a weak kid looks cool when he tries to stop the enemy,I want readers to be aware of such a gap.

Q. Among the characters, which one has the biggest gap?

A. I think Sakura, the main character, has the biggest gap, and Hiragi as well. He's a strong character, but he gets nervous, and he's always being pushed by Umemiya.

Q. What do you most want to express with WINBRE:

A. "Being with others." Sakura's used to being alone, so he forgot what it was like to be with others, but he did find people he wants to be with, and thinks "I want to be here".

It would have been difficult to express if I was aiming for such an message from the beginning, but as the story progressed, I feel like I could finally see it.

I originally drew it with a vague (basic) feeling, and it was cool to see the story develop and the message within it.

I think i saw that theory about suo's eye being white!! It had something to do with the colour wheel or the possibility of suo being blind and him having a milky white iris?

About the slave thing, idk why but one of my initial theories was that suo was part of an illegal fighting ring and his master took him under his wing. His master being self taught could be him picking up fighting styles from being forced to fight other people. But then again suo seems to have a good foundation of martial arts and i think his fighting style would be more like the rest of furin's street brawl style if that were the case...

back to the hotpot abomination, suo says something along the lines of "i brought chinese cabbage because that goes in hotpot right?" Now idk if it's the translation but the "right?" at the end makes it sound like he's never had hotpot before (PLEASE LET THE BOY EAT HOTPOT IT'S THE BEST THING EVER)

how would video game nights work with a group of friends? you recently got into playing a variety of games, staying up late chatting with a group of five guys (including you, six).

⚀ hiori yo

"oh!, right, do you want to head over to my place for a game night?"

one night, he snuck you over to his place to play video games. he had done this several times with the other friends in your video game friend group, but this was a first with you.

hiori yo is not a rager while gaming. he's pretty chill and skilled overall in a variety of games.

while he focuses on playing video games on his computer as you watch him, he would have one headphone over his ear while the other behind his ear—just to hear you speak. (he likes to listen to you while playing games together.)

he doesn't seem to mind what game to play, as long as you both play together and have fun. 

he often plays games on his desktop with a controller and headset. most of the time, you two play multiplayer games to have fun together; however, if the game is singleplayer, he would swap controllers with you.

⚁ nagi seishiro

he rarely rages in game and plays more mobile fps games—his skill level could easily put your gaming skills to shame.

you can notice that he is slightly disappointed when he doesn't perform as well in fps games as he thought he would.

prefers for both of you to play more fps related games or popular games, although he would consider other options all while spending time with you.

“… me that.” you look over to stare at him, noticing that he’s staring at your red defeat screen. instead of asking whether you need any help, he will just take your device/phone out of your hands and play for you until you get at least one win.

if you are over at his apartment, you usually sit against the bed while he hogs the bed to himself while playing games together.

sometimes when you are sleeping in your dorm/room/place where nagi isn't near you, he will text you at 2am asking if you want to play games together. he's bored and tired, but not to the point where he wants to sleep yet. but that’s when you start yelling at him to go to sleep because he has a match the next day early in the morning.

⚂ shidou ryusei

oh, this man will rage no matter what. if there was a title for the top rager of any game, it would be shidou ryusei. you’ll hear his voice nonstop, whether on call or irl.

when children beat him to first place in obstacle video games or dti, he would try breaking the children's spirit in game multiple times and use voice chat to scream at them.

he has gotten banned on voice chat and roblox. (which he blames the children for pissing him off.)

he will make sure to blast music while playing video games with you and enjoying your time together, even if he rages 24/7.

⚃ sakura haruka

despite his… questionable gaming skills, he is a dedicated gamer. even if he ends up last place, he will force everyone to play another round of mario kart until he gets first place. (he still has never gotten first place.)

he usually plays ps4/ps5/xbox/nintendo games with a controller, so when you do game with sakura, it would usually be irl.

this guy could be a shidou ryusei v2 in terms of raging. he could probably also contest with shidou for the top rager title for any game—because this kid will start barking and pointing fingers at people when he does not win (which is pretty much all the time because he never wins).

when he plays other multiplayer games, he does use voice chat… and has gotten banned twice once.

as for fps games, his reaction time is… questionably slow. he blames his poor gaming performance for the office keyboard and mouse, but…

⚄ kiryu mitsuki

he plays mobile games a lot, including animal crossing, brawl stars, and call of duty (mobile version).

when he does play games with you or with the whole friend group, he would make sure to check-in with the silent people in the group to make sure they are doing fine. “y/n-chan, you there? you’ve been silent for a while… i hope you aren’t dead literally. on the screen… that’s another thing.”

for animal crossing, he also plays the nintendo version, but he also plays the mobile version. he’s super proud of the town that he had started since the early days when the game was just released.

he wouldn’t miss a day on the daily bonus for call of duty. even when the furin high boys practiced fighting for the war ahead of them, he was still so committed to the continuing the daily streak, even asking nirei to help him login for him and collect that daily bonus.

Have you seen the very lengthy posts about Suo probably being Chinese? It gives a lot of insight to the possible “dieting” etc, tho I’m sure some of it is due to the whole theme of bonding over food it’s also a great in depth read that gave me a lot of food for thought on his character! Now you mention heterochromia, if that was the case maybe suo's eye is redish/ he has some permanent injury that causes his eye to be red. Dragons in chinese culture are often portrayed as red if i'm not wrong? Hence the dragon spirit residing in his eye.

Yea i wonder why suo looked surprised when he saw sakura. It could def be about sakura's looks but he tells the rest of the class it was sakura who jumped into the fight the previous day. Which means he already knew who sakura was. Suo you mystery, we'll never know will we?

black: evil, revenge, death [power?, honor?]

white: mourning (in chinese culture, they typically wear white for funerals), [cycle of life?---it makes sense, purity?, virtue?]

blue: harmony, peace, healing, rest, prosperity [i'm not sure about any of this? i was just google searching this one]

green: approaching of spring, new life, plant growth [was fact-checking with my mom and she said that green is usually related to spring]

yellow/golden: wisdom, good fortune, power, wealth, social standing as emperors were "descendants of dragons"

so... how do we narrow the possible eye-colors behind suo's eye patch? (his behavior and based on the potential backstory)

starting with red: (yes i did say what i said above BUT) red is the closest color we have with brown? and also red is usually related to dragons and all that stuff... i'd say suo with red eye is like a 12% chance---js a lil iffy on the lucky and good fortune part.

black: pretty possible? similar to sakura i guess. but then the thing is, i feel like animes usually depict people with heterochromia = really unique = the eye colors of each eye is super different. might be wrong on this one but hmm... 15% chance (im legit js dropping random numbers). but he could be hiding his eye that is black... like he's trying to shove the evil away... not give into revenge... HMM..

white: im pretty sure i saw a theory about this on suo! saying how his other eye would be white, contrasting sakura's black-colored eye. i'll try to find this and link it here but in the meantime... 45% chance. also white = morality/virtue... and it kinda matches up with suo's personality. (empath) (thinking of master highly) (+ other stuff)

blue: idk if anything about blue matches suo's personality besides peace (since he's the peace maker/mediator between a lot of stuff---sakura and sugishita, having them make up after their lil first day battle...) 3%?

green: emancipation of slaves... new life... yeah i still wonder why he says emancipation of slaves as his dream! something worth visiting later on... but the approaching of spring was the part that made me pause a little. from what i quickly searched up (correct me if i'm wrong), but japan starts school in april. april is in spring. that's when a lot of flowers blossom (sakura)---actually idk what i'm saying anymore but 10%. my brain is fried and idk how im linking whatever i js said to how it could possibly be suo's hidden eye color

yellow/golden: social standing! his currently defensive fighting style, and his use of palms rather than punches (um actually he did punch a guy with his knuckles but MAINLY PALMS). how he dresses. how he acts. he acts in a super... royal/noble type way? 15%, kinda understandable... actually idk what im talking abt now

I think when suo says he's no match for sakura he means emotionally/ mentally? Sakura wears his heart on his sleeve and he's shown to be able to overcome challenges (mental, emotional, physical) at very very high speeds. Maybe that's what suo means because suo still has stuff holding him back.

I always thought maybe suo used to be a very offensive fighter and then after his eye accident he changed his style to be defensive. The style representing his deflective personality aside, maybe it's just easier to be a defensive fighter when you only have one eye? Let them get close to where you can see/ sense them, and then push them away. Perhaps it also shows how suo deflects qns and his attitude is because he's trying to ignore his trauma despite it clearly holding him back.

BUT YES PLEASE I NEED MORE SUO NIREI TRAINING SCENES. I feel like that will give us more clues about suo's past.

Ykw i thought, i also have this silly little headcanon that the reason suo wears turtle necks/ clothes with high collars is because of that one quote "the sl*ttiest thing a man can do is wear a turtle neck". And i keep laughing at the thought because what if he's really just being a little menace and it's purely aesthetic (highly unlikely but it's funny to think about that)

ohhhhh WAIT that makes a lot more sense now that its starting to come together. comparing suo and sakura---we can see how much sakura has grown from the start to now. from starting to trust the bofurin kiddos and relying on them more, sakura starts to open up to them all.

but we still see suo holding back from "committing more sins," kind of repressing his emotions and putting on a certain act for his behavior---we know when he goes crazy-free in fighting, he can get super angry.

now on the topic of repression (and psychology), repressing one's emotions means shoving it down into the abyss. you don't want to talk about it, acknowledge it---and when it starts to overload, you will snap. it's like a volcano, and you will start to feel enraged (in suo's case, probably?). and this very event may happen to suo, an event even bigger than the other two times he snapped. (which would most likely cause frenzy within furin)

but this very event may also be why he decided to go to defensive mode. this event caused his emotions to take over him, making him do something he regrets, and possible resulting in an eye injury. repression of emotions is a defense mechanism... with unpredictable consequences. and he doesn't want to make the same mistake again, hence putting his guard up and being more emotionally intelligent. being more defensive than offensive.

after all, we know that suo is an excellent fighter. you do bring up a good point, that suo may have been an offensive fighter. (offensive fighting equals? letting his emotions free and truly being himself) (maybe)

(also on the note of eyepatch: this eyepatch can also serve as an item that represses the memories that came with having an eye injury.)

but i feel like so much about suo---his behavior, how he fights, the eyepatch and the mysterious eye---really shows how he doesn't want to dig up the past. as you mentioned, he does deflect questions (tsugeura's aesthetic questions)... but sooner or later, he'll be trapped.

he can't just keep running forever. there's goingg to be a turning point, an event so big that would probably bring the wild suo out. (this sounds like pokemon all of a sudden AHAHHAHAHA)

also, suo's eye---do you think it's bc of an eye injury (and all that idea up there) leading him to wear an eyepatch, or does he have heterochromia?

bc if he does have heterochromia, and he has an eyepatch hiding one of his eyes, the eyepatch could also be a symbol for hiding his identity... maybe people thought suo was also a freak , and then he blew up and punched someone and did something super horrible, and then he wanetd to repress that angered + wild side of him by hiding that eye that ppl said it made him seem like a monster?

i was trying to find a panel of suo commenting on sakura's eyes (i also checked out the first there episodes again to see if suo said anything about sakura's heterochormia) but i don't think he ever mentioned it. i js saw in the second episode, suo turned around and looked surprised? not sure what he was surprised about, but he seemed interested? (interested in sakura's heterochromia eyes? or look, bc of sakura's hair?)

most ppl talk about sakura's eyes or hair right away---kotoha asks whether he wears contacts... so hmm... something else to think about.

Something that's occurring to me is that Wind Breaker isn't just doing found family narratives, but also other examinations of non-standard family structures.

Sugishita is being raised by his grandparents because neither of his parents wanted to be involved in his life after their divorce.

Umemiya and Kotoha were raised in a group foster home.

Togame has lived with his grandfather since he was young.

And all of these situations are not just okay, they're good environments for a kid to come up in.

Can i just say i giggled at the previous anon😭 atp they watched the show with their eyes closed and ears plugged. Suo is one of the most mysterious characters to ever exist. He's not just a "guard dog" he's just protective of his friends when they get hurt or are in danger. Anyways I hope you have a good night or morning depending on your time zone!

yeah after days of---as i call, investigative researching (this does not make sense)---suo is definitely not a 1d character.

there's a lot of sides to suo that will be revealed to the audience soon. hopefully. there's too many layers of mystery to that lil guy. and he's too important of a character to not get a backstory.
