Quick PSA, if you get one of those "Work scanned, AI use detected" comments on AO3, just mark them as spam.
Some moron apparently built a bot to annoy or prank hundreds of authors.
There is no scanning process, your work doesn't actually resemble AI writing, it's all bullshit. Mark the comment as spam (on AO3, not the email notification you got about the comment!) and don't let it get to you.

so many people are failing so hard at the most basic fundamental question of democracy that faces as voters in 2024:
fascism or nah?
democracy or nah?
authoritarianism or nah?
but the way some of you talk about Joe Biden it makes me think you wish that he was more authoritarian. I choose to believe people simply don't understand the legal separation of powers, I choose to believe it's a civics failure
but more and more I think there's just an appetite for authoritarianism. I think that's what draws people to Trump, actually. I think that's where you get dummy leftists saying "Why didn't Biden just sign an executive order to [insert thing that the courts would CERTAINLY immediately overturn here, like student loan cancellation, which is exactly what happened]?" and you're like "well, the courts" and they're "why didn't Biden just stack the courts" and you're like "well, the Senate" and they're like WHY DOESN'T HE STEAMROLL THE SENATE and it's like BECAUSE HE FUCKING CAN'T IT'S AGAINST THE LAW. And why isn't the senate better? because stupid fucks don't vote
people just want a benevolent dictatorship without realizing that such a thing has always been a fucking fantasy. a dictator is a dictator is a dictator.

I really think people have forgotten just how bad things were under the Trump Administration. Literally every day there was news about some service being cut or someone terrible appointed somewhere they shouldn't be or what have you. He constantly flirted with WW3 and military dictatorship. It was such a blur of badness that there aren't big standouts for people to point to to make him "the XYZ president." it was everything. all the time. Why do we not remember this.

Having read some of the reports and testimonies from survivors of Oct. 7, there is a part of me that *has* to believe that for a lot of those activists celebrating it as an “act of resistance” they don’t fully comprehend or are even aware of the extent of the brutality, in order to preserve what is left of my faith in humanity.
I’ve said this before but I really do think that for rather a large amount of these people, it’s an abstract concept - they’ve spent their privileged Western lives (I say this as a privileged Westerner) cheering on plucky oppressed underdogs overthrowing Evil Oppressors in the most sanitised way possible in their favourite fandoms.
For a lot of them, that’s their point of reference. The Oppressors are cartoon level evil and their much deserved downfall is an exciting denouement. It’s easy to conceptualise extreme violence as “necessary” when literally your only experience of it is a sanitised version through a TV screen that you can switch off.
If they really had to stand and confront the actual reality of what it is they’re cheering, *really* see and feel on their own skin the almost inhuman level of sadistic depravity displayed by Hamas - a fixation on torture and sexual violence that is truly nightmare inducing - would they understand what true evil actually looks like? Would they understand that far from being an oppressed group rising up against their oppressors and fighting for justice, Hamas employed the age old, extremely common tactic of mass rape as a weapon of war in order to humiliate and dehumanise people they see as less than human? You need only look at any war or genocide from the last 30 years - Bosnia, Rwanda, Ukraine, Sudan, countless others, to see it’s a tool of subjugation, not resistance.
Or are they so far gone at this point that they *do* understand and they just don’t care?
How on earth do I square this in my brain? As a human being? As a woman?

I demand my fairy walrus.
truth is, underneath it all, a lot of our beliefs aren't rational, and they're formed young. all those stories of magical protagonists. secret worlds if you just had the key. creatures just out of view. all that shit we imagined doesn't go away because we got older. in a lot of ways it gets bigger, more elaborately built on.
i think we're hiding the emotionally devastating core of the walrus vs fairy debate under jokes.
you see a fairy on your doorstep? and you think finally.
