She's Here!

Our sweet baby girl arrived at 3.20 this afternoon, weighing 8lbs 3oz. She's absolutely perfect.

At two thirty Matt was allowed to wheel me to the operating room. In the prep room they administered the spinal anesthetic. Once it had kicked in they took me into the operating room and placed a screen over my body so I wouldn't be able to see what was happening.

After a few minutes I felt a strange sensation as they cut into me then there was an almighty splash as my amniotic fluid flooded the room. One of the nurses commented that it was like a tsunami. The poor surgeons were drenched.

I then felt a tugging sensation then of the doctors spoke. 'She's here!" He placed her into the towel a nurse was holding then she passed her to Matt, who held her to me. She seemed fine, beautiful. But then she started struggling to breathe. The nurse took her from Matt and whisked her over to the neonatal bed, where they started working on her before whisking her to the neonatal unit. I told Matt go with her while I got stitched up and recovered a bit.

Finally three hours later I was reunited with my husband and our baby girl. Since her birth they had attempted to pass a nasogastric tube down her nose, into her throat but this had failed. They had then sent her for a X-ray, which confirmed the diagnosis of Esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula, which are defects affected the esophagus and trachea. She has Type C which means her lower esophageal pouch connects abnormally to the trachea and the upper esophageal pouch ends blindly.

She's having surgery either tomorrow or Thursday to repair the defect to her trachea. They can't repair her esophagus because the gap is too large, so they're going to wait for her to grow a bit before they perform the procedure.

Me and Matt spent time together with her, taking things and coming to terms with her diagnosis. I did have a bit of a cry. Matt's gone home now, to be with Eli. He said he might bring Eli in tomorrow to see me, which'll be nice. Aoife is staying with her dad and of course Niamh is with her mum. They were both very excited to hear their baby sister had arrived and can't wait to meet her!

30 Weeks Pregnant!

I can't believe I'm 30 weeks pregnant already! This pregnancy is just flying by! She'll be here in just 10 weeks!

I had my 30 week antenatal appointment today and as per my last few appointments I'm measuring a few weeks ahead. My levels of amniotic fluid are quite high. At the 30 weeks they don't tend to an ultrasound, just check baby's heartbeat with a foetal Doppler. However because of my high levels of amniotic fluid they did do an ultrasound. Baby girl is looking a good size and heart rate was around 135 BPM. She still doesn't have a stomach have stomach bubble, so it is ever likely she has Oesophageal atresia.

A little overall pregnancy update!

I am 30 weeks and 2 days pregnant

Weight gain - 25lbs

I am craving - Peanut butter

Food aversions - anything fishy, the smell makes me feel nauseous

Movement - She's quite active

Stretchmark's - Yes

Symptoms - Heartburn, backache and an itchy bump!

Maternity clothes - Absolutely!

Next appointment - 11th October

Surprise... We got MARRIED!

Yes you read that right, we got married! It was a quick decision and we didn't want anything big and fancy, we're both simple people. So we got married today in a registry office, with my best friend Marty and Matts sister, as our witnesses.

Matt proposed a few weeks ago and last week we decided we just wanted to get married as soon as possible. So we booked the registry office and chose rings to exchange.

I'm so happy to be Mrs Harrison at last!

We're having a girl!

Today was my 20 week anatomy scan. The sonographer noticed I have slightly higher levels of amniotic fluid than what is considered normal. She closely examined the baby's stomach and found that the baby has no stomach bubble. She explained this could mean the baby has a condition called Oesophageal atresia. What this means is the upper part of the oesophagus doesn't connect with the lower oesophagus and stomach. It usually ends in a pouch, which means food can't reach the stomach. This condition cannot be diagnosed until birth, when they will try to pass a nasogastric tube down the baby's throat through their nose.

She told us not to worry ourselves and gave us some information about the condition. If she does have it she'll likely need surgery soon after birth and spend a few weeks in the NICU.

We're trying not to worry ourselves, if she does have the condition, we'll take each day as it comes..

We’re Adding To Our Family!

Hello again, it’s been a while since I actually posted on this blog but I’ve been really rushed off my feet. But I’m back and we’re adding another baby to our family!

This baby wasn’t planned, not really. After we had Eli, we decided we’d have another baby at some point. We said we’d probably wait until Eli was at least one before we started trying again. Then a few days after we got back from holiday, I had to rush to the toilet to be sick. After this happened a couple of days in a row, I popped out and bought some pregnancy tests. I took me four tests for me to be convinced I was really pregnant. I was shocked, we’d been careful, taken precautions.

I’ve seen a doctor and had the pregnancy confirmed. I’ve had a dating scan and as of today, I’m eleven weeks exactly. Our little one is due on December 3rd 2022. Now that the initial shock has faded, we’re getting quite excited. Aoife is really excited to be a big sister again. Eli doesn’t really understand that he’s going to be a big brother but I’m sure he’ll be great!
