PMP Critique:  “Pickett’s Pocket Guide” Handbook
For my pre-major project, I am putting together a locational focused booklet designed for my final major project story book. The booklet will explore the background and development of a new world in which my protagonist finds himself.
My story focuses on a beastly yet cultivated character and the unlikely bond between him and a far less civilised scavenger child he encounters following his banishment to an autumnal forest land. My pre-major project will take form of a twisted travel guide, illustrated with a biased, distorted view of the new, therefore challenging my character’s ideas of what to expect. Everything that is illustrated in the guide will be revealed as something far less frightening in my final major project book and I wish to plant the guide in the beginning of my book, referring to it throughout the story and taking you on the same journey as my main character.
My overall area of practice is character design focused and I will be thinking about the ways in which my characters thrive and fit into their surroundings. Each illustrated page will explore a part of the land and characters will be present throughout. My pre-major project and final major can exist independently but will link and support each other to incite the art of reveal and perception in illustrated narrative.
This is a digital concept drawing of my main character for my FMP who the booklet will be assigned to. His name is Pickett (after Wilson Pickett) and I am contemplating calling my PMP booklet “Pickett’s Pocket Guide: A Manual for the Newly Banished” or something similar. Although Pickett himself will not be illustrated in the handbook as it has been given to him, the cover and certain pages will feature very similar beasts.

One of the main things I want to highlight in this handbook is the new world’s inhabitants, the species that rule this autumnal forest land (the deuteragonist in my FMP will be one of these.) I have decided that in the guide they will be depicted as fleshy, gangly beings with overgrown beastly heads who capture and enslave other creatures for riding. In the FMP it will be revealed that they are just human-like creatures wearing large crafted heads who live with harmless beasts that help them get around. I wanted the forest inhabitants to be tribal and I know that many existing tribes make masks and headwear in the shape and style of human and animal heads. For example, Asara Mudmen of Papa New Guinea. I wanted my inhabitants to have the heads similar to those of forest animals (i.e., a fox, a wolf, an owl, a squirrel, a hedgehog etc.) I have contemplated naming them “Nakey Bones” as I feel that this is how the beasts from Pickett’s world would see them.

I have been playing with the idea of having a short instructional rhyme with each page that is relevant to the image, also putting more fear into Pickett on his involuntary travels. Below is an illustration of an idea I have for a forbidden location in the forest land. Gigantic trees bearing screaming faces that are found in the darkest parts of the forest land. However, in my FMP it will be revealed that this giant tree is essentially a block of flats for the forest land inhabitants, and the screaming faces are not eyes and mouths, but windows and doors.

So far I have only experimented with the actual content and the composition and have not yet explored use of colour, which will be a very important part of the final outcome for my pre-major project. I plan to use the colour red consistently throughout the handbook. The new world is an autumnal forest land and I want every tree to be tall and bear red leaves. This also means I can describe the place as blood stained in my handbook, which will be a terrifying prospect for my character.

I want the forest to be filled with ghastly creatures big and small and I will depict them as if they are guarding the land, and intimidating Pickett into submission where his only safe place is underground. The handbook will illustrate another beast like him alone in a cave, suggesting this is where he will be for the rest of his days.

I drew the tiny thumbnail for the beast in the cave after the bigger illustration and I actually prefer it. I think because of the weight and position of his body and the shape of the cave. Below is a sketch of my most recent idea of illustrating the Nakey Bones making a sacrifice around fire. I thought this could be revealed in my FMP as dance and celebration. I want to develop the bodies more, making them a bit less human and more grotesque for the handbook.

Other sketches I have made for my manual include ideas for a page about food and survival. Beware of pumpkins! It depicts a beast in a vegetable patch, picking a pumpkin from off the ground only to find that it is alive and the pumpkin is a head attached to a body in the soil. By pulling the pumpkin-man from the ground, the beast has inflicted danger upon himself. In my FMP book, it will be revealed that pumpkins are not alive, they just have faces carved into them as part of tradition in the forest.
For the next couple of weeks I will be resolving ideas and drawing up the final pages of illustrations for my booklet and colouring them digitally on PhotoShop. I will then proceed to organise and assemble each page on InDesign, preparing them for print.
